Updated October 7, 2026: Halo: Campaign Evolved is no longer an upcoming game: it launched on July 28, 2026. It is a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, not a sequel. If you want the shortest route through the central Master Chief campaign story, play Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo: Campaign Evolved, then Halo 2 and Halo 3. The earlier games are not a prerequisite for starting the remake.
Do you need to play older Halo games first?
No. Halo: Campaign Evolved retells the campaign of Halo: Combat Evolved as a modern remake and preserves the original campaign experience, according to Halo’s official announcement. You can start with the remake without completing the earlier releases.

Halo Studios recommends that brand-new players begin with the original missions because their tutorials help onboard players. The studio also says the remake’s three new prequel missions are available as soon as the game launches. That makes the original missions a sensible starting point, while the prequel missions are an optional early detour. Halo Studios’ July Community Q&A gives this guidance; it does not say newcomers must play any other Halo game first.

Should you play the original or the remake?
Choose Campaign Evolved for a modern entry point
If you want to begin with the current version, start with Campaign Evolved and play its original missions first. Halo lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Steam. The official announcement identifies it as a remake that preserves the original campaign experience. Availability of physical editions is narrower: Halo Support lists physical Standard Editions for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 through select retailers. Check the platform store or retailer for current availability.
Choose Combat Evolved to play the original release
If you prefer the original game, or want to compare it with the remake, play Halo: Combat Evolved. You do not need to play both versions before moving on to Halo 2. The choice is about which version you want as your starting experience, not an extra story requirement.

Where does Halo Infinite fit?
Halo Infinite is an additional Master Chief campaign, rather than a prerequisite for the remake. Halo describes its campaign as a Master Chief story on Zeta Halo. Its multiplayer is free to play, but campaign access is a separate paid or subscription-based offering; the available option can vary by platform and subscription. Check the relevant storefront for current access terms before buying or subscribing. Halo’s official Infinite page distinguishes the campaign from multiplayer.
Are Halo books required?
No. The novels offer extra context, but they are optional rather than prerequisites for understanding the game path.
