During a domain migration, the important Search Console work is to verify the old and new properties, preserve ownership verification, review settings that affect crawling and link handling, and configure the new property to match what still applies. Build the URL map and permanent redirects first. Then use Change of Address when the move is an eligible domain-level change, submit the new sitemap, and monitor both properties while Google recrawls the site.
Change of Address transfers signals and expresses Google’s preference for the destination; it does not create redirects, transfer every setting automatically, or guarantee an instant ranking change.

Start by identifying what actually changed
The correct Search Console action depends on whether you changed the domain, protocol, URL path, or only the infrastructure behind the URLs. Classify the move before changing settings.

|---|---|---|
One domain to another, such as example.com to example.net |
Yes, if both are domain-level properties owned by the same Google account | Map URLs, publish 301 redirects, verify both properties and variants, then submit Change of Address |
| One subdomain to another domain or subdomain | Usually yes for each eligible domain-level source property | Handle every moving source variant separately; redirects and verification are still required |
| HTTP to HTTPS on the same domain | No | Implement HTTPS redirects, update canonical URLs and sitemaps, and verify the HTTPS properties |
Moving pages inside one domain, such as /oldpath/ to /newpath/ |
No | Redirect the old paths, update internal links and the sitemap, and inspect representative URLs |
| Changing hosting, a server, or a CDN while visible URLs stay the same | No | Follow no-URL-change migration checks; concentrate on uptime, crawling, robots rules, and response codes |
| Changing from www to non-www on the same domain | No | Use one canonical host, permanent redirects, canonical tags, and matching sitemap URLs |
Change of Address is available for domain-level properties, not path-level properties. It covers all paths and the protocols included in the selected source domain property, but it does not automatically move every subordinate subdomain beneath it.

Verify the old and new properties before the move
Add the destination property
Add the destination domain to the same Google account that owns the source property. Change of Address requires ownership of both. A Domain property is generally the clearest way to cover protocols and subdomains, while URL-prefix properties are useful when you need to inspect a specific host or protocol.
Cover every URL variant that exists
Verify the variants that users and crawlers can actually reach: www and non-www hosts, and HTTP and HTTPS protocols where they remain live. Do not assume that verifying one URL-prefix property verifies another. Keep a list of active and inactive variants, because an old variant can still receive links or requests after launch.
Make verification survive the cutover
Check the verification method on the old property and make sure it will remain available long enough for Google to recrawl the site. If you use an HTML verification file, copy it to the new site. If you use a meta tag, retain the applicable tag in the new templates. Google Analytics or other supported verification methods also need to remain correctly connected. A URL change can require a different token, so test access to the new property before switching DNS or hosting.
Confirm users and permissions
Open the property’s users-and-permissions settings and recreate the people, agencies, and service accounts who need access. Confirm at least one reliable owner can administer both properties. A migration can appear broken simply because the new property was verified by a different account or a team member lost owner access.
Review settings on the old property and reproduce what still applies
There is no universal one-click transfer for every Search Console setting. Review the source property, decide which items remain valid, and configure them on the destination property.

Crawl rate
Google’s migration guidance recommends setting the crawl rate to Let Googlebot determine for both old and new sites. A manual limit can slow discovery of the destination during the period when Google needs to fetch redirects and new pages. If a temporary operational constraint requires a different approach, document it and remove the constraint when the server is ready for normal crawling.
Disavowed backlinks
If a disavow file was uploaded for the old site, review it carefully and upload the applicable file again using the Search Console account for the new site. Do not copy a file blindly: confirm that its domains and URLs still describe the links you intend to have ignored. Keep a dated backup of the file and the reason for each major entry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsManual actions
Inspect the new property’s Manual actions report. This is especially important when the destination domain was previously owned by someone else. A manual action attached to the domain can affect the new operator even if the site design and content have changed. Resolve any listed issue through the documented reconsideration process rather than assuming migration will remove it.
Removals
Check the Removals report for temporary removals or outdated-content requests left by a previous owner. A removal can continue to suppress a URL for its defined period. Record the affected URLs and expiration dates, then decide whether the request is still appropriate for the new site.
Other operational settings
Review ownership, delegated users, associated services, and any settings your team uses for reporting or API access. Treat each as a separate decision: carry over only what belongs to the destination and update credentials or integrations that refer to the old host.

Prepare the URL map and redirects before submitting anything
Map old URLs to equivalent destinations
Create a row for every important old URL, its corresponding new URL, the redirect status, and the validation result. Map pages to their closest equivalent, not automatically to the new homepage. Preserve query-parameter behavior where it matters, and identify pages with no replacement so they can return an intentional status instead of a misleading redirect.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use permanent redirects
Publish a server-side 301 redirect from the old homepage to the new homepage, as required by the Change of Address checks. Apply 301 redirects to canonical old pages and the rest of the mapped URL set. Avoid chains such as old URL to an intermediate URL to the final URL; point each old address directly to its final destination. Google Search Central states that “301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.” That does not mean every ranking signal or user experience transfers perfectly, so test the actual responses and content.
Keep the old site reachable
Do not take the old domain offline immediately after launch. Keep redirects in place for at least 180 days, and longer when Google Search traffic still reaches old URLs. Google also recommends continuing to pay for the old domain for at least one year to reduce the risk that another party acquires it and uses it maliciously.
Update the destination’s internal signals
Change internal links, canonical tags, hreflang references, structured-data URLs, Open Graph URLs, and any hard-coded absolute links to the destination domain. Make sure robots.txt and XML sitemaps are available on the new host and do not block the pages you expect Google to crawl.
Use Change of Address only after the move is live
When it is appropriate
Use Change of Address after the new site is deployed and redirects are working for a move between domains or eligible subdomains. The source and destination properties must be owned by the same Google account. Google describes the tool this way: it tells Google to emphasize crawling and indexing the new site over crawling the old site.

When it is not appropriate
- Do not use it for an HTTP-to-HTTPS-only change.
- Do not use it for moving folders or individual pages within one domain.
- Do not use it for a www/non-www preference on the same domain.
- Do not use it for a host or CDN change when user-visible URLs remain unchanged.
Submit every moving source variant
The tool does not automatically cover subordinate subdomains below the selected property. If several source variants move, verify and submit the applicable request for each one, including active and inactive www/non-www variants that can still receive traffic or links. Check that each destination property is the intended host and protocol before submission.
Understand the pre-submission checks
Search Console checks ownership and tests 301 redirects on a sample of pages. Fix critical failures before proceeding. A non-critical warning may allow submission, but investigate it rather than treating it as harmless; a warning often identifies an incomplete redirect pattern or an unverified variant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Move and validate the sitemap
Submit the new sitemap in the new property
Submit the destination sitemap from the new property’s Sitemaps report. Confirm that the report is open for the correct host and protocol. The report shows sitemaps submitted through the report or API for the current property, so a sitemap submitted under the old HTTP or www property may not appear under the new HTTPS or non-www property.
List destination URLs, not redirect URLs
Replace redirected addresses in the sitemap with the final URLs that should be crawled and indexed. Keep only canonical, indexable destination URLs. Remove chains, duplicate variants, blocked URLs, and pages that return errors.
Interpret sitemap status correctly
A submitted sitemap helps Google discover URLs but does not guarantee that every listed URL will be crawled or indexed. Check the fetched date, processing status, discovered URL count, and representative URL inspections. A successful fetch only proves that Google retrieved the sitemap, not that all migration redirects or content signals are correct.
Best Value
Monitor both properties throughout the transition
Watch traffic and indexing signals
Keep the old and new properties available in your reporting. Compare clicks, impressions, indexed-page counts, crawl activity, and prominent queries by URL group. Inspect a sample of old URLs to confirm a single 301 to the intended destination, then inspect the corresponding new URLs for indexability, canonical selection, and content availability.
Expect a gradual change, not an instant swap
For a medium-sized site, Google gives a general expectation of a few weeks or more for new URLs to gradually appear in place of old ones. Larger sites can take longer, depending partly on URL volume and server speed. Old URLs may remain visible while Google recrawls them, especially when an old URL is still accessible and there is no equivalent destination page.
Keep redirects beyond the minimum when needed
Google’s Change of Address signals and preference for the new site continue for 180 days. Maintain redirects for at least that long and extend them while meaningful Search traffic, external links, or users continue to arrive at the old domain. Removing them early can turn valuable links and bookmarks into errors.

A practical migration sequence
- Inventory domains, subdomains, protocols, important URLs, sitemaps, verification methods, users, and old-property settings.
- Add and verify the destination property in the same Google account as the source.
- Verify relevant www/non-www and HTTP/HTTPS variants.
- Deploy the new site, preserve verification tokens, and update canonical and internal URL signals.
- Map old URLs to final destinations and publish direct 301 redirects.
- Test representative pages, redirect chains, robots.txt, canonical tags, and server capacity.
- Review crawl rate, disavow files, manual actions, removals, users, and integrations; reproduce only applicable settings.
- Submit the new sitemap and confirm that it lists final destination URLs.
- Submit Change of Address for each eligible moving domain-level source variant.
- Monitor both properties, maintain redirects for at least 180 days, and keep the old domain registered for at least one year.
Troubleshooting common migration failures
The Change of Address option is unavailable
Check that you are using a domain-level property, not a URL-prefix property, and that the source and destination are owned by the same Google account. A path move, protocol-only change, or infrastructure move is not eligible.
Ownership verification fails after launch
Restore the HTML file or meta tag, reconnect the supported analytics verification, or add the new property’s token. Confirm that redirects do not remove the file or tag before Google can verify it.
Critical redirect checks fail
Request the old URLs directly and inspect the HTTP status, final location, and number of hops. Replace temporary redirects, redirect loops, and chains with one direct 301 to the final equivalent URL. Check both representative pages and high-value URL patterns.
The sitemap is fetched but pages are not indexed
Inspect destination URLs for noindex directives, robots.txt blocks, incorrect canonicals, server errors, thin replacements, or redirects in the sitemap. A fetched sitemap is a discovery aid, not an indexing guarantee.
Traffic falls sharply
First separate technical failures from normal recrawling. Check server availability, redirect coverage, canonical tags, internal links, robots rules, sitemap processing, manual actions, and removals. Compare old and new URL groups rather than judging the entire domain from one day of data.
Quick Recap
Migration checklist
- Both source and destination properties are verified and owned by the same account.
- All live URL variants are identified and, where applicable, verified.
- Verification files, tags, or analytics connections survive the move.
- Users and permissions are recreated on the destination property.
- Crawl rate is set to Let Googlebot determine unless there is a documented reason otherwise.
- Applicable disavow files are reviewed and uploaded for the destination.
- Manual actions and removals are checked, especially on an acquired domain.
- Old URLs map to final equivalents with direct 301 redirects.
- The destination sitemap contains final canonical URLs.
- Change of Address is submitted only for eligible domain-level moves and every moving source variant.
- Old redirects remain for at least 180 days, and the old domain remains registered for at least one year.
- Traffic, indexing, crawl activity, sitemap processing, and representative URLs are monitored on both sides.
