Flash-Lite is geared to fast everyday work, Flash balances speed and reasoning, and Pro is intended for harder mathematics and coding but generally takes longer. Higher thinking levels can use more of your allowance without guaranteeing a better answer every time.
Privacy and personalization are separate choices. Memory, response instructions, and connected Google apps can make replies more tailored. Keep Activity, temporary chats, and activity deletion change history, retention, and model-improvement use, but none is a zero-processing mode: Google still processes chats to answer you and protect its services.

Start with the setting that matches the task
Gemini Apps can expose several model choices, but availability depends on your account, plan, and Google’s rollout. The selector and wording may change. When a model or thinking control is not visible, your account may not be eligible for it yet.

These descriptions are product positions, not a promise that one model will win every prompt. A short rewrite may not benefit from Pro, while a multi-step proof or difficult debugging task may justify its extra time and usage. Model names, limits, and eligibility are subject to change.

How to choose a model
- Open Gemini and start a chat or open the model selector in an existing chat.
- Review the models shown for your account. Choose Flash-Lite when turnaround matters more than maximum reasoning, Flash for a general-purpose balance, or Pro for unusually difficult reasoning, mathematics, or coding.
- Send a small test prompt before committing a long task. Check whether the answer is accurate enough and whether the delay or allowance cost is acceptable.
- If a model is missing, check the account and plan shown in Gemini’s settings and the current Google Gemini Apps Help documentation. Do not assume that an API or Workspace control has the same name or behavior as the consumer app.
Thinking level changes effort, not just tone
Where the feature is available, Gemini lets you select Low, Medium, or High thinking. If you do not select a level, Google documents Low as the default. A higher level gives the model more opportunity to work through a problem, but it is not a universal quality switch: extra deliberation can still produce an incorrect answer, and simple prompts may gain little from it.
Use Low for straightforward explanations, extraction, routine summaries, or brainstorming where quick feedback is useful. Try Medium when a task has several constraints or requires checking intermediate steps. Reserve High for problems where deeper reasoning is worth additional latency and allowance use, such as difficult code debugging or involved mathematical work.
Google says advanced models and higher thinking levels use more of a user’s allowance. That makes thinking level a resource decision as well as a quality decision. If a long answer is not improving, first tighten the prompt, provide the missing data, or ask for a verification pass rather than automatically selecting High.

Auto model selection trades control for convenience
Auto model selection routes a prompt to what Google describes as the most efficient model and thinking level for that request. It is useful when your workload changes from quick questions to demanding analysis and you do not want to switch manually.
The trade-off is visibility and predictability. Auto may choose a faster path for one prompt and a more intensive path for another, so response time, capability, and allowance use can vary. Select a model and thinking level yourself when you need consistent behavior across a batch of work, are debugging a result, or must control latency and usage closely.
Personalization settings affect relevance and style
Memory from past chats
Gemini can use information from previous conversations to personalize later answers. Google’s described memory feature requires a personal account and Keep Activity to have been on for the past-chat memory experience. Eligibility can differ by account.

Memory can save you from repeating preferences or background, but it also means old context can influence a new answer. Turn the feature off or delete relevant past chats when you do not want that information used. Deleting a chat is different from deleting information stored in another Google service.

Response instructions
Response instructions are durable preferences for how Gemini should answer—for example, putting a short summary first or using bullet points for long explanations. They change style and format more reliably than a one-off sentence in a prompt, but they are not perfect topic filters.
Google documents this feature as unavailable for work, school, or supervised accounts in the described experience, and unavailable in some features such as Gems. If Gemini keeps mentioning a subject, Google advises deleting chats about that subject; an instruction alone may not prevent the reference.

Connected Google apps
Connected apps can supply additional context for personalization. That may make an answer more useful when the task depends on information in those services, but it also broadens the context Gemini can draw on. Review which connections are enabled and disconnect any source you do not want available for personalization.
Google distinguishes turning Personal Intelligence off for one chat from stopping that chat from being saved to Gemini Apps Activity. These controls answer different questions: one limits personalization in that conversation, while the other concerns activity storage.
Keep Activity and temporary chats are privacy controls, not off switches
Google says it uses Gemini chats to provide the service and to protect Google, users, and the public. Its Privacy Hub also says some data may be reviewed by human reviewers. Do not enter confidential information that you would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve its services.
What happens when Keep Activity is off
Google states that chats made while Keep Activity is off are retained with the account for 72 hours. They can use the last 24 hours of chat as context to respond and are retained for safety and service-protection purposes. If Keep Activity is off and you do not submit feedback, Google says future chats are not used to improve its AI models. Submitting feedback changes the data Google says it collects and uses, so treat feedback as a separate data-sharing event.
What a temporary chat does
Temporary chats are Google’s cited option for chatting without saving activity to the Google Account in the normal manner described by Google. They are retained for 72 hours, can use the last 24 hours of chat as response context, and are kept for safety and service protection. Google explicitly says temporary chats are not used to train its AI models.
Those protections do not mean the conversation is invisible while you are using Gemini. Google’s published wording says that even when Keep Activity is off or temporary chats are used, it still uses chats to respond and help protect Google, its users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers.
Keep Activity on, deletion, and auto-delete
With Keep Activity on, you can review and delete Gemini Apps Activity and change its auto-delete period. Google lists 18 months as the default, with choices including three months, 36 months, or indefinite.
Google also says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when you delete activity. Other Google services and settings can have their own retention rules, so deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not erase data already saved in those services.

How to configure Gemini deliberately
For a fast, low-friction session
- Choose Flash-Lite, or use Auto if you are comfortable letting Google route each prompt.
- Leave thinking at Low unless the task clearly needs more reasoning.
- Keep the prompt focused: state the output format, length, and source material to reduce avoidable back-and-forth.
- Use a normal chat only when retaining the conversation is acceptable; otherwise choose temporary chat before entering the prompt.
For a difficult reasoning or coding task
- Select Pro if it is available and the problem’s complexity justifies additional time and allowance use.
- Set thinking to Medium or High only when intermediate reasoning or verification is important.
- Ask for assumptions, edge cases, and a final check. A higher setting does not replace fact-checking.
- If the first response is slow or consumes too much allowance, switch to Flash or a lower thinking level for routine follow-up work.
For a personalized writing workflow
- Open Gemini’s personalization or settings area and review Memory, response instructions, and connected apps separately.
- Put stable formatting preferences in response instructions, such as “give the conclusion first, then bullet points.”
- Turn on memory only if the convenience is worth allowing relevant past-chat information to shape future replies.
- Disconnect apps that contain information you do not want used as personalization context.
For a privacy-sensitive conversation
- Use a temporary chat when you do not want the activity saved to your Google Account in the normal way.
- Alternatively, check Keep Activity and turn it off before starting the conversation.
- Do not paste secrets, credentials, regulated data, or any information you would not want processed for service protection or potentially reviewed.
- Do not submit feedback on that chat if you are relying on Google’s stated condition that chats made with Keep Activity off are not used to improve its AI models.
- Remember that a 72-hour retention period and no training use are not the same as immediate deletion or no processing.

Common misunderstandings and fixes
- “High thinking guarantees a correct answer.” It does not. Higher effort can help with difficult tasks, but verify important claims and calculations.
- “Auto always picks the strongest model.” Auto is described as choosing an efficient model and thinking level for the prompt, not necessarily the most capable option every time.
- “Turning off personalization stops storage.” Turning Personal Intelligence off for one chat is not the same as preventing Gemini Apps Activity from being saved.
- “Temporary means private from Google.” Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models, but Google still processes them for responses and protection, retains them for 72 hours, and may involve human reviewers under its published policy.
- “Deleting activity removes every copy.” Google says reviewer-related data can remain for up to three years, and information stored in other Google services follows those services’ rules.
- “Every Gemini account has the same controls.” Model access, response instructions, memory, and other features can vary by account, plan, geography, and gradual rollout.
