You can shrink some Windows game installs without moving files or changing their formats by using NTFS file-system compression. It is reversible, but there is no reliable extension-by-extension whitelist or guaranteed savings rate. The safest approach is to compress one game on an NTFS drive, measure the result, and leave its internal archives and personal data untouched unless the game or mod manager documents a specific method.
First, distinguish file-system compression from archiving
Windows’ compact.exe applies NTFS compression while keeping files at their usual paths. Windows handles the compression as files are accessed. Microsoft documents the command for Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it works on NTFS volumes—not FAT or FAT32. See Microsoft’s compact command documentation.

ZIP or RAR compression is different: it stores files in an archive that generally must be extracted or accessed by software designed to read that archive. Rebuilding a game’s internal asset packs is different again. The Steam-listed Game Compressor describes its approach as Windows file-system LZX compression, not ZIP/RAR conversion; its product-page claims are not independent benchmarks. Which game files should you compress?
There is no source-backed rule that particular extensions are always safe or worthwhile. A file’s extension alone does not show whether a game already stores its contents in compressed form, and savings vary by game version, file structure, and the files present. The Game Compressor listing itself warns that estimates vary. Measure the specific installation rather than applying a percentage reported for another title.

For a cautious space-saving attempt, use NTFS compression on one installed game directory, leaving the files in place and in their existing formats. Start with a game you can restore or verify if needed. Do not assume the same result will apply to another game—or even to the same game after an update.
What should you leave alone?
- Internal game archives and asset packs: Do not hand-edit or rebuild them without instructions specific to that game. Valve’s SteamPipe guidance is for developers packaging games, not a blanket warning against NTFS compression. It says general compression of developer pack files is usually not recommended because compression across asset boundaries can make updates less efficient; where pack files are compressed, Valve recommends per-asset compression where possible. Valve’s Steamworks uploading guidance.
- Saves and mods: Do not treat them as disposable install files. The available guidance does not establish a universal rule for compressing save folders or mod directories. Follow the game or mod manager’s instructions and back up personal files separately before changing them.
- Shader caches, logs, anti-cheat components, and launcher metadata: There is no authoritative game-wide rule establishing that these categories are safe or useful to compress. Avoid changing them independently of the game’s documented instructions.
Compress one game and check the result
- Confirm the drive’s filesystem. In File Explorer, open This PC, right-click the drive containing the game, choose Properties, and check File system. Continue only if it says NTFS; Microsoft says compact cannot compress FAT or FAT32 volumes.
- Record the starting disk usage. Note the game folder’s Size on disk in its Properties. This is the relevant figure for storage used, and it may differ from the folder’s displayed size.
- Back up nearby personal files. If saves or mods are stored near the installation, copy them somewhere safe using the game’s or mod manager’s guidance. Locations vary by game.
- Apply compression to existing files. In Command Prompt, run
compact /C /S:"C:pathtogame", replacing the example path with the actual game directory. Microsoft documents/Cto compress and/Sto include files in the specified directory and its subdirectories. Do not rely on merely setting a folder’s compression attribute: Microsoft distinguishes the directory’s default for subsequently created files from compression of files already inside it. See Microsoft’s file compression documentation. - Launch and check the game. Test the game’s normal launch and the features you rely on. If behavior changes or the result is not worthwhile, you can reverse the operation.
- Measure again, including after updates. Compare the folder’s new Size on disk with the original. Updates may replace or add files that are not compressed, so recheck the installation after patching.
How to undo compression or troubleshoot
To uncompress the game directory and its files, use compact /U /S:"C:pathtogame" in Command Prompt, substituting the correct path. Microsoft documents /U for uncompression and /S for applying the operation through subdirectories. The compact command reference.

If Steam reports missing content or the game crashes, Steam Support recommends verifying the game’s installed files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Verification checks installed game files; it is not a substitute for backing up personal saves. Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Steam’s Backup feature is limited to games that completely download, install, and patch through Steam. Do not assume it includes every user-created file; Steam directs users to game-specific sources or the developer for file-location details. Steam Support: Using the Steam Backup Feature.

Why developer pack-file advice is not the same as a warning about NTFS
Valve’s SteamPipe documentation explains a packaging issue for developers: compression that spans multiple assets can cause a small change to affect a larger update chunk, increasing what clients need to download. Valve also notes that SteamPipe builds an updated pack file alongside the old one, so updating a large pack can require substantial temporary disk space. Those cautions concern how a game’s files are packaged. They do not establish that ordinary Windows NTFS compression breaks Steam or forces every compressed game to be redownloaded.
