The document considers proposals to raise capacity to about 60 million passengers a year across two precincts, but it does not confirm that the proposed work is complete, set a construction timetable or explain what disruption passengers will face.
What is Hyderabad Airport’s passenger capacity?
AERA’s June 2026 consultation paper puts the existing terminal’s designed capacity at 34 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and reports traffic of 30.48 million passengers in FY 2025–26. That means RGIA was approaching, but had not exceeded, the design capacity cited in the paper. These are figures reported or assessed in a regulatory consultation, not a new independent passenger count. Read AERA’s consultation paper.

What upgrades and terminals are proposed?
Southern Precinct: more capacity within the existing terminal
The consultation assesses a Southern Precinct enhancement that would raise its capacity to 40 MPPA. The changes described include baggage-handling and baggage-management systems, a reconfigured check-in arrangement, increased domestic security-screening capacity and improvements to baggage reclaim. AERA says the enhancement is expected without a material increase in the existing terminal’s floor area. In practical terms, the proposal relies in part on processing and operational changes, rather than simply adding terminal space.

Northern Precinct: a proposed 20 MPPA terminal
AERA’s paper also discusses a Northern Precinct Terminal Building (NPTB) with a proposed capacity of 20 MPPA. Paired with the Southern Precinct’s assessed 40 MPPA, that would make a terminal system of about 60 MPPA. This is a proposal described in a consultation paper; it is not evidence that the northern terminal is open or that the combined capacity is already available to passengers.

Over 100 MPPA: the longer-term master plan
RGIA’s official master-plan page gives an ultimate capacity of over 100 MPPA for its modular integrated passenger terminal, within a broader vision that includes multiple runways and integrated terminals. That is a long-term master-plan figure, not the near-term configuration assessed by AERA. See RGIA’s master-plan page.
| Planning stage | Capacity figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Existing terminal | 34 MPPA designed capacity; 30.48 million passengers in FY 2025–26, as reported by AERA | Current baseline cited in the June 2026 consultation |
| Consultation-stage proposals | 40 MPPA Southern Precinct plus proposed 20 MPPA Northern Precinct; about 60 MPPA combined | Assessed or proposed capacity, not confirmation of completed or open facilities |
| Ultimate master plan | Over 100 MPPA | RGIA’s longer-term vision, not the near-term proposal |
Will construction affect your trip?
The available official material identifies types of proposed work and capacity goals, but does not establish start dates, construction phases, terminal closures, temporary passenger routes, access-road restrictions or expected changes to waiting times. It therefore cannot confirm either that your trip will be disrupted or that it will be unaffected. AERA says it expects GHIAL to maintain required service standards after the modifications or upgrades at Terminal 1; that is a regulatory expectation, not a measured guarantee of shorter queues or unchanged service.
