Start by checking for software and security updates, then secure the lock screen. After that, review battery protection, display preferences, camera options, and privacy controls. These are settings to choose—not defaults that every owner needs to change. Menu names can vary by region, carrier, and software build; if a path differs, search for the setting in the Settings app.
1. Update the phone and secure it
Check for available software updates before spending time configuring menus. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series announcement says the phones receive seven years of security updates; that is a security-update commitment, not a guarantee that every feature or menu will remain unchanged for that period. - Open Settings > Software update (or the system-update control shown on your phone) and check for an update.
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Security update and check the security-update screen.
- Set a secure PIN, password, or pattern under the lock-screen controls. Add fingerprint or face recognition if you want biometric unlocking; Samsung’s guide says a secure screen lock is required to set up biometric locks.
- Review Settings > Security and privacy > Auto blocker. Samsung describes it as a way to block threats and suspicious activity, not as protection against every threat.
These paths are documented in the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra user guide. The guide covers Android 16; menu labels can change with updates or carrier customization.

Open Settings > Battery > Battery protection and review the options shown on your phone. Samsung describes this setting as a way to help extend battery lifespan. Choose the option that fits how you charge and use the phone; the available guide does not establish a specific battery-life gain or a universal charging limit for each mode.

3. Choose your display trade-offs
Samsung’s display settings let you balance sharpness, smoothness, brightness, and screen-on time. Its guide states: “You can lower the screen resolution to save battery power, or increase it to sharpen the image quality.” It does not quantify how much runtime a resolution change saves on the S26+.
- Screen resolution: Keep the factory choice if you prefer maximum image sharpness; consider a lower resolution if battery runtime matters more. Samsung warns that some apps may not support a changed resolution and may close when it is changed.
- Motion smoothness: Choose the scrolling and animation feel you prefer rather than assuming one option is best for everyone.
- Brightness and Dark mode: Set adaptive brightness, brightness level, and Dark mode to suit your surroundings and visual preference.
- Screen timeout: Pick an interval that avoids leaving the display on longer than you need while still being comfortable to use.
- Eye comfort shield: Review it if you want the display adjusted for your viewing preference.
These controls are listed in Samsung’s guide under Display. Search Settings for the specific label if the menu path on your build differs.

4. Review camera settings for the way you shoot
Open Camera settings and consider the choices that affect framing, storage, privacy, and how the camera behaves between sessions. Samsung documents these controls but does not prescribe one best setup for every photographer.
- Composition guide: Turn on the guide if grid or level aids help you frame shots.
- Location tags: Decide whether to attach location information to photos. This is a privacy choice, especially for images you share publicly.
- Photo format: High-efficiency image saving can help conserve storage, but consider whether your editing and sharing workflow supports the format.
- Video stabilization and tracking autofocus: Review these if you often record movement or follow moving subjects.
- Settings to keep: Choose whether Camera should reopen with the last-used shooting mode, selfie angle, or filters.
- Other options: The guide also lists shot suggestions, Photo enhancer, watermark, Motion photos, Auto FPS, selfie mirroring, and shooting methods. Change them only if their behavior suits your use.
Camera options are documented in the Samsung user guide. The list of settings is not a recommendation to enable all of them.

5. Decide whether Advanced Intelligence can process data online
Review Settings > Advanced features > Advanced Intelligence (or search Settings for “Process data only on device”). Samsung’s guide describes this option as processing Advanced Intelligence data locally rather than online, and warns that enabling it makes some features unavailable. Read the in-device description and choose based on your privacy preference and the features you use.
Samsung’s launch announcement also describes privacy and security features including Privacy Alerts, Private Album, Auto Blocker, and Knox protections. Availability and exact names can vary by software and region. These controls do not eliminate privacy risk.

6. Tidy notifications and quick access
Notification behavior is a usability choice, not a required performance tweak. Review notification categories, what appears on the lock screen, and the notification panel or Quick Settings layout. Labels and layout can vary by One UI build, so use Settings search when a control is hard to find.
