For a German IP address without a paid subscription, the free plans identified in 2026 sources are Windscribe, PrivadoVPN and hide.me. Gizmodo reported 10 GB per month for Windscribe and PrivadoVPN, and unlimited data for hide.me. Proton VPN Free also offers unlimited data, but its free locations do not include Germany. Plan limits and server lists can change, so check the current terms before signing up.
Which free VPNs have German servers?
Windscribe, PrivadoVPN and hide.me are the options in the reviewed sources that include German locations on their free tiers. That makes them the relevant choices if your priority is to route traffic through Germany and receive a German IP address.

Proton VPN Free is a different fit: the cited reviews describe unlimited data, but say Germany is not available on its free tier. Germany appears among its paid locations, which does not make it a German-server option at no cost.

Windscribe: German location with a monthly cap
Gizmodo lists a German server, 10 GB per month and unlimited free devices. TechRadar also includes Germany in its list of Windscribe’s free locations. The allowance makes it important to keep track of data use if you plan to stream, download or leave the VPN connected regularly.
PrivadoVPN: German location with a monthly cap
Gizmodo reports a German server and 10 GB per month. Tom’s Guide describes 13 city locations across 10 countries, including Germany, and notes that some locations are virtual: the IP address appears to come from the selected country even when the server is not physically hosted there. Its reported 188.82 Mbps result was the highest of the three German free-server measurements in Gizmodo’s test, not a general speed guarantee.

Gizmodo and TechRadar say Germany is excluded from Proton VPN Free’s locations. Tom’s Guide describes the free plan as covering 10 countries without manual server choice. As VPN editor Mo Harber-Lamond put it in Tom’s Guide’s discussion of the free plan, “Proton VPN’s biggest limitation is that you can’t choose which server to connect to.” Consider it only if unlimited data and general privacy use matter more than a German IP.

How much data do free VPNs allow?
In Gizmodo’s September 2026 comparison, Windscribe and PrivadoVPN each had a reported 10 GB monthly allowance; hide.me and Proton VPN Free were listed as unlimited. “Unlimited” refers to the data allowance reported in that comparison, not a promise of unlimited speed or capacity. Check the plan terms shown in the provider’s app or signup flow because free-plan conditions can change.

Your results can differ with your distance from the server, internet provider, device, VPN protocol and time of day. TechRadar notes that free-server crowding can reduce capacity and make speeds inconsistent, particularly at busy times. Testing from your own location is more useful than choosing a provider solely by a single published result.
Can a free VPN stream German TV or Netflix Germany?
Do not assume a German IP will unlock a particular streaming service. Gizmodo reported that none of the free services in its test opened Netflix Germany. It also observed that public broadcasters may sometimes accept a free German IP, but access depends on the broadcaster and can change. Treat both outcomes as test-dependent rather than guaranteed.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Is a refund window the same as a free VPN?
No. Gizmodo describes NordVPN as a paid service with German locations in Frankfurt and Berlin and a 30-day refund route. You pay for a subscription first, and any refund depends on the provider’s current conditions; it is not a permanent free plan. Check those conditions before paying if this is the route you are considering.
Quick Recap
How to choose for your situation
- You need a German IP: Start with Windscribe, PrivadoVPN or hide.me, then confirm that Germany is selectable on the current free tier.
- You expect regular or heavy use: Compare the current data allowance; the reviewed comparison listed 10 GB monthly for Windscribe and PrivadoVPN and unlimited data for hide.me.
- You want unlimited data but not necessarily Germany: Proton VPN Free may suit that need, but its cited free location list excludes Germany.
- You want access to a specific streaming service: Treat access as uncertain and verify it with the service; published tests are tied to particular services and times.
