Choose a Formlabs resin by the job your part must perform, not by color or a single headline specification. Standard or Model resin is the sensible starting point for detailed visual prototypes. Tough or Tough 2000 is the ABS-like choice for enclosures, snap-fits and assemblies; Durable is the polypropylene-like choice for low-friction, impact-oriented parts; Flexible or Elastic is intended for rubber-like compliance; Rigid 10K or Rigid 4000 is for very stiff, dimensionally stable engineering parts; and High Temp is for heat-exposed tooling. Dental, BioMed and casting materials belong to their named, validated workflows rather than general prototyping.
Choose by the part’s job
Formlabs offers resin families with deliberately different behavior. A resin that produces a beautiful appearance model may be a poor choice for a clip that flexes repeatedly, while a stiff engineering resin can be unnecessary for a one-day design review. Start by writing down the part’s real requirements:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Does it need fine detail and a clean appearance, or mechanical performance?
- Will it bend, snap, slide, compress, or absorb impact?
- Must dimensions remain stable under load or temperature?
- Is the part being used in a dental, medical, casting or thermoforming process?
- Which printer generation, tank and supported resin versions are available?
Those answers narrow the choice more reliably than a generic “strongest resin” ranking.

Standard and Model: the visual-prototype starting point
Standard Resin is aimed at high resolution, fine features and fast design iteration. It is the appropriate default when the question is “Will this shape, texture or assembly look right?” rather than “Will this part survive a demanding load?” Formlabs describes it as providing high resolution and fine features directly from the printer, making it suitable for rapid prototyping and product development.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use it for appearance models, fit checks, presentation prototypes, miniature details and early iterations where surface quality and geometry matter most. Model materials serve the same broad visual-development role when a particular Model formulation is specified for your printer and workflow.
Do not select Standard simply because every prototype is called a “prototype.” A cosmetic housing that will be repeatedly opened, a living hinge, or a loaded snap-fit needs a resin family selected for its mechanical behavior. Standard is best treated as the fast, detailed reference model against which those functional versions are judged.
Tough and Tough 2000: ABS-like functional prototypes
Tough was designed to simulate ABS plastic, with comparable tensile strength and modulus, according to Formlabs. That makes it a practical investigation point for functional parts such as enclosures, snap-fit joints and assemblies.

- Testing whether a snap-fit can assemble without cracking immediately.
- Building an enclosure that will be opened and closed during development.
- Evaluating an assembly in which parts experience ordinary knocks or handling.
- Prototyping a component whose behavior should be closer to a common rigid thermoplastic than to a brittle display model.
Tough 2000 belongs in the same functional-prototype decision area when the supported formulation and printer profile match your project. Check the exact version in the current Formlabs guide; “Tough” and “Tough 2000” are not interchangeable labels for every printer generation or tank.
ABS-like does not mean the printed part is an injection-molded ABS production component. Orientation, wall thickness, geometry, post-processing and repeated loading still affect performance. Use a representative test coupon or an actual sacrificial part before committing a design to production tooling.
Durable: low-friction and impact-oriented concepts
Durable simulates polypropylene (PP), with comparable low modulus and high-impact strength. Formlabs positions it for consumer products, packaging and low-friction, low-wear moving parts.

Good applications
- Packaging concepts that need a little give rather than a glassy, rigid feel.
- Sliding interfaces and moving consumer-product mechanisms where low friction is central to the evaluation.
- Parts expected to take impact while remaining relatively compliant.
Durable is a more logical starting point than Tough when the key question is how two parts slide, flex slightly or survive a drop-like interaction. Conversely, a rigid enclosure that depends on stiffness and a crisp snap action may be better investigated in Tough. The choice is about the failure mode you need to study, not a universal strength hierarchy.
Flexible 80A and Elastic 50A: compliant, rubber-like behavior
Flexible is formulated to simulate an 80A-durometer rubber for soft-touch materials and ergonomic features in multi-material assemblies. Elastic 50A occupies an even softer, more elastic part of the same general design space.
Use Flexible for controlled softness
Choose Flexible 80A when a grip, gasket-like interface, overmold concept or compliant feature must feel rubber-like but still retain a defined shape. It is useful for checking hand comfort, compression, bending and contact with a harder mating part.
Use Elastic when greater stretch is the design question
Elastic 50A is the investigation point when the part’s value comes from pronounced elasticity: a soft wearable or ergonomic feature, a deformable membrane concept, or a component that must recover after bending. Confirm the permitted geometry, thickness and post-processing profile for your printer before relying on that behavior.
Flexible and Elastic are not substitutes for a general-purpose resin in a rigid load-bearing bracket. Their compliance changes fit, tolerances and force transmission. Design tests should measure the actual deflection or compression required by the product, not just whether the print feels soft in the hand.
Rigid 10K and Rigid 4000: stiffness and dimensional stability
Rigid materials are intended for engineering parts where deflection and dimensional change are more troublesome than impact softness. Rigid 10K and Rigid 4000 are the families to investigate for very stiff jigs, fixtures and fluid or airflow components.

Typical reasons to choose a rigid formulation
- A jig must hold a reference dimension while a process is performed.
- A fixture must resist bending under a modest, known load.
- An airflow or fluid-path concept needs a stable internal shape for testing.
- A housing or bracket must retain alignment rather than absorb impact.
High stiffness can make a part less forgiving. Thin sections, sharp internal corners and impact loads may produce a different failure mode from a Tough or Durable part. Use Rigid when the test calls for stiffness and dimensional stability, and validate the complete geometry rather than assuming a material label predicts every design.
High Temp: heat-exposed tooling and fixtures
High Temp is mapped to injection-molding work and heat-resistant fixtures, including molds, inserts, mounts and housings. The version matters: Formlabs’ support information lists 238 °C at 0.45 MPa for High Temp V2 and 289 °C for V1. Those figures are version-specific support data, not a blanket promise that every printed part can operate continuously at those temperatures.
Choose High Temp when the part must retain useful shape during a heat-exposed process, such as a tooling trial or a fixture near a hot component. Specify the resin version, pressure condition and expected exposure when comparing the support data with your process. A short thermal excursion, a sustained operating temperature and a loaded mold impose different demands.

Confirm the printer profile, tank, layer thickness and post-processing instructions for the exact version, then test a representative insert or fixture under the real thermal and mechanical cycle.
Dental, BioMed and other specialist materials
Dental and BioMed resins are selected by indication and workflow, not simply because a printed shape resembles a dental or medical part. Formlabs documents dedicated workflows for products such as dental guides, splints and dentures, and maintains a regulated quality system for those materials.
If a part will contact a patient or be used in a clinical process, use the named biocompatible product, printer profile and validated post-processing route specified for that indication. A general-purpose Standard, Tough or Flexible resin is not an equivalent substitute, even if the print has the desired dimensions. Follow the applicable documentation for curing, cleaning, traceability and intended use.

Casting and thermoforming choices
Clear Cast
Clear Cast is one of the materials Formlabs maps to investment-casting workflows. Select it when the printed pattern must be evaluated as part of that casting process, and follow the casting-specific preparation rather than treating it like an ordinary prototype.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFast Model
Fast Model is Formlabs’ fastest resin, with a stated print speed of over 100 mm per hour. That speed is useful for rapid pattern or thermoforming development when the supported printer, geometry and layer settings allow it. Confirm that the speed claim applies to your chosen setup before planning a production schedule.
Tough 1500
Tough 1500 is another material Formlabs maps to thermoforming applications. Investigate it when a prototype will be used to evaluate a forming process, rather than choosing a resin solely for the appearance of the tool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility: printer, tank, version and post-processing
Material behavior is only useful if the cartridge and print profile are supported by your equipment. Formlabs’ current resin guide relates printer generation, resin tank, resin version and layer thickness; use that guide as the compatibility authority for your exact setup.
- Identify the printer generation. Record the exact printer model and, where applicable, its generation. Similar names do not guarantee identical resin support.
- Check the resin version. Match the cartridge label and version to the printer-and-tank combination listed in the current guide. Do not assume that a V1 and V2 formulation share the same profile.
- Confirm the tank. Use the tank type and condition specified for that resin. A worn or contaminated tank can affect print quality even when the cartridge itself is correct.
- Select a supported layer thickness. The available layer options are part of the validated profile. Choose one listed for the resin and printer rather than transferring a setting from another material.
- Follow material-specific wash and cure instructions. Cleaning and curing settings affect final properties, so use the values published for the exact resin version.
- Keep materials separate. Formlabs warns not to mix different resins. Empty or replace material as directed before changing families, and do not pour an unverified mixture back into a cartridge or tank.
- Check shelf life and storage. Use the manufacturer’s shelf-life information and storage conditions for the cartridge you have. A resin past its stated life can produce results that no longer match the published profile.
Practical selections for common projects
“I need a detailed model for a design review.”
Start with Standard or the appropriate Model resin. Prioritize resolution, fine features and surface presentation; move to a functional family only if the review includes meaningful loading, flexing or repeated assembly.

“I need a soft grip or compliant insert.”
Use Flexible 80A for a defined rubber-like feel or Elastic 50A when greater softness and recovery are central. Test the finished, post-processed part at the intended thickness because compliance is highly geometry-dependent.
“I need a stiff drill guide or fluid-path fixture.”
Investigate Rigid 10K or Rigid 4000. Verify that the required dimensional stability and stiffness are supported by the complete geometry, then test the fixture under the actual clamping or flow setup.
“I need a tool near heat.”
Choose High Temp and identify the exact version and pressure condition behind the published thermal figure. Test the tool through the expected heat cycle before using it for a critical process.

“I need a dental or medical component.”
Begin with the dedicated Dental or BioMed product that explicitly covers the indication. Follow its validated printer, tank, washing, curing and quality workflow; do not substitute a general-purpose resin.
Before ordering a cartridge
Check the exact cartridge version, cartridge size, printer and tank compatibility, seller and current availability at the time of purchase. Product names and marketplace listings can change, and the evidence available for this guide does not establish a universal price or a guaranteed inventory level. The compatibility check is more important than choosing the lowest listed price: an unsupported cartridge can waste a tank, a print cycle and the part you were trying to evaluate.
Bottom line
Use Standard or Model for detailed visual work; Tough for ABS-like functional assemblies; Durable for low-friction, impact-oriented concepts; Flexible or Elastic for rubber-like compliance; Rigid 10K or Rigid 4000 for stiff, dimensionally stable engineering parts; and High Temp for heat-exposed tooling. Treat Dental, BioMed and casting materials as specialist systems with their own indications. Finally, verify the exact printer generation, tank, resin version, layer profile and post-processing instructions before printing—compatibility is part of the material choice, not an afterthought.
