Which Focus Tools Are Best for Time Blocking, Task Management, and Website Blocking?

Sunsama is built for calendar-based timeboxing, TickTick combines tasks and focus utilities, and Freedom or Cold Turkey are dedicated blocking options—with current plan and platform details to verify.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best tool for all three jobs. Choose Sunsama if you want to schedule tasks directly into calendar time, TickTick if you want task management and focus utilities together, or a dedicated blocker such as Freedom if you need to restrict distracting apps and websites. Cold Turkey is another blocking option, but check its current platform support and features before choosing it. These recommendations reflect vendor feature documentation, not hands-on testing or a comparative benchmark.

Choose by the job you need done

Your priority Start with Why it fits
Turn a task list into a calendar-based daily plan Sunsama It lets users place tasks into calendar time slots and create working sessions in its calendar or a connected calendar. Sunsama describes timeboxing as scheduling tasks into a daily itinerary.
Manage tasks and use a focus timer in one service TickTick Its feature list includes task lists, reminders, calendar views, a timeline, Pomodoro, habit tracking, statistics, and integrations. TickTick lists these features, but does not establish that it outperforms alternatives.
Block apps or websites during work periods Freedom Its help center documents app, website, and internet blocking, with plan differences for scheduling and session controls. See Freedom’s free-plan details and verify current plan limits.
Explore another dedicated blocker Cold Turkey Its official pages describe scheduled blocking for websites and apps, but surfaced information is old. Check its feature page and verify present-day availability before relying on specifics.

What each tool does

Sunsama: plan the day on a calendar

Sunsama is the clearest fit when your main challenge is deciding when each task will happen. Its documentation says you can drag tasks into calendar slots and create working sessions in Sunsama or a connected Google, Outlook, or Apple calendar. Its feature page also advertises guided planning and a 14-day trial; trial terms may change. Review Sunsama’s feature information before signing up.

TickTick: tasks plus focus utilities

TickTick combines task organization with calendar views and focus tools, including a Pomodoro timer. Its feature page also lists smart filters, reminders, timeline, integrations, habit tracking, and statistics. That breadth may suit someone who prefers one service for planning and focus utilities, but the listed features alone do not prove it is the best choice for every workflow.

Freedom: block digital distractions

Freedom is designed to restrict access to selected websites or apps, or to the internet as a whole. Its help center, dated February 23, 2026, says the free tier supports blocking and use on unlimited devices. It lists custom blocklists and desktop app blocking; Premium adds recurring and later-starting sessions, sessions longer than two hours, and Locked Mode. These are vendor plan details, so check Freedom’s current documentation for what is available when you sign up.

Cold Turkey: investigate before committing

Cold Turkey’s official feature page describes scheduled blocks and blocking websites and apps. Its pricing page says one purchase covers the user’s computers. However, the surfaced pages are notably old, so current prices, platform support, and feature availability are not established here. Verify details on Cold Turkey’s pricing page before making a decision.

How to decide between a planner, task manager, and blocker

  1. Ask whether tasks need to become calendar events. If you want a task to occupy a specific stretch of your day, begin with Sunsama. A task list or timer by itself does not create that calendar itinerary.
  2. Consider how you capture and organize work. If reminders, task lists, calendar views, and a Pomodoro timer in one service matter, compare TickTick’s listed features with your daily workflow.
  3. Decide whether you need enforcement. A calendar plan reserves time but does not necessarily stop you from opening distracting sites. A blocker can restrict access, but it does not make a task plan for you. This distinction follows from the separate features each vendor documents.
  4. Choose one app or a small stack. If you need both scheduling and enforcement, a planner paired with a blocker may make more sense than expecting one tool to do both jobs. Check that the specific apps and devices you use are supported.

Can a paper planner work for time blocking?

An hourly daily planner is a simple offline aid: write tasks into time slots to make a manual schedule. The practice resembles the timeboxing concept Sunsama describes, but Sunsama does not evaluate or endorse a paper planner or a particular model. Paper planning will not sync digital tasks or block websites, so it is best treated as a supplement when you want a screen-free schedule.
