Silence nonessential alerts during focused work, move your phone out of sight, and check messages at planned breaks. Keep a clear route for urgent contact and tell people when you will respond. Reducing interruptions can help, but the right amount of notification control depends on your task and how the change affects you.
Why notifications interrupt focus—even when you ignore them
A phone alert can pull attention away from demanding work even if you do not pick up the device. In a 2015 laboratory study, Stothart, Mitchum, and Yehnert found that notifications alone disrupted performance on an attention-demanding task. The result describes performance in that study, not a guarantee that every alert causes a noticeable lapse in everyday life. Read the study record.

Interruptions also create a task-switching cost: attention must return to the work after it has shifted. Larry Rosen, PhD, told the APA, “We may think we are multitasking, but we are really task-switching.” APA Monitor on Psychology.

- Choose a specific focus block. Decide which task needs sustained attention rather than trying to use the same setting all day. A demanding study session may call for stronger controls than work that depends on quick replies.
- Silence alerts that can wait. Turn off nonessential app sounds, banners, and vibrations for the block. Consider disabling email alerts as well. Keep only alerts that genuinely need immediate attention; the intervention evidence does not show that any one setting by itself guarantees a particular result.
- Reduce visual and physical cues. Put the phone face down and out of sight or reach. Close unrelated browser tabs and distracting sites so they are not competing for attention.
- Set a message-check time and an urgent route. Tell colleagues, classmates, or family when you expect to check messages next. Agree how to reach you if something cannot wait. This preserves reachability without making every alert an interruption.
- Start with a manageable interval. The APA describes an expert strategy of working for a short period, taking a brief technology break, and gradually extending the focused period. Treat that as a starting point to adjust—not a universal prescription or promise of a particular result. A basic timer can help mark the work and break periods, but buying one is not itself a focus intervention.
- Review and adjust. Notice whether the routine reduces interruptions or instead leads you to check the phone repeatedly or worry about missing something. If full silence is uncomfortable, keep a smaller set of priority alerts or try batching notifications at planned times.
Should you turn off notifications while studying or working?
For work that needs sustained attention, reducing nonessential alerts is a reasonable experiment. In a 2023 field experiment, Ohly and Bastin studied 247 participants; 124 were assigned to disable notifications for one day. The study reported fewer notification-caused interruptions, better performance, and lower strain on average. Effects varied with fear of missing out (FoMO) and pressure to respond, and the one-day study does not establish that permanent blocking will work the same way for every person. A 2021 systematic review covering 33 laboratory experiments and 49 interventions found improved primary-task accuracy overall (standardized mean difference 1.03, P = 0.001) and reduced resumption lag (standardized mean difference −0.51, P < 0.001). These pooled laboratory results are not estimates of how much an individual reader’s productivity will improve; the review also found that results varied by intervention and task type. How to stay reachable without checking every alert
Going fully offline is not the only option. The APA recommends deciding which notifications are actually needed and managing other people’s expectations when replies may be delayed. See the APA’s healthy technology-use guidance.

- Keep a reliable urgent-contact channel available, while silencing routine app notifications.
- Tell people when you will next check messages, rather than leaving them to guess when you will reply.
- Use scheduled checks or notification batching if frequent alerts are distracting but complete silence increases worry.
- Match the strength of the controls to the task: a focus-heavy task can justify more interruption reduction than a role requiring immediate communication.
APA coverage of a notification-batching study reports improved attention and several self-reported outcomes among people who received batched alerts. People who received no notifications experienced higher anxiety and FoMO. That is a reason to test selective silencing or batching instead of assuming that zero alerts suits everyone. A randomized intervention study included strategies such as disabling nonessential notification sounds, banners, and vibrations and keeping the phone silent, face down, out of sight, and out of reach. These were parts of a broader intervention, not separate proof that each setting alone produces a specific outcome. Read the study.
