These steps address different problems, and Amazon publishes no measured speed gain for changing any one setting.
Identify your Fire TV Stick before changing settings
Fire TV Stick models differ in storage, wireless, video, and Ethernet-adapter support, so confirm the exact model before following model-specific instructions or buying an accessory. Use Amazon’s Fire TV device identification guide or check device information in Settings. Menu names and paths can vary by model and software version.

How do I make my Fire TV Stick run faster?
For sluggish menus or an app that has stopped responding, use this routine before considering a factory reset. Amazon documents where to find updates, storage, application controls, and device functions, but does not quantify a speed improvement from these maintenance steps.

Open Settings, then My Fire TV or Device & Software, and select the software update option if shown. Install an available update and follow the on-screen prompts. Amazon’s settings navigation guide confirms these menu areas.
- Review available storage and apps. In My Fire TV or Device & Software, check available storage. Then open Settings > Applications to review installed apps and remove ones you no longer use if your interface offers that option. Amazon identifies these locations; it does not establish a particular free-space target or promise that removing an app will make menus faster.
- Restart the device. Use the restart function in the device functions/settings area when menus are slow or an app is stuck. A restart is different from a factory reset: reset erases the device’s configuration and should be reserved for later troubleshooting, not treated as a routine speed setting.
If performance remains poor after these checks, the device’s hardware capabilities may be a limiting factor. Amazon notes that older Fire TV Stick hardware is more limited, and app performance and stability can depend on device capabilities (Amazon’s Fire TV device specifications FAQ, updated August 8, 2025).

Why does my Fire TV Stick keep buffering?
If the menus respond normally but video pauses, buffers, or drops in quality, diagnose the internet connection before changing display output. Amazon recommends checking connection strength and bandwidth, moving the Fire TV device closer to the router, or using a wired connection when supported (Amazon’s streaming and connectivity troubleshooting).
- Check the Fire TV network status and whether other devices are also having connection problems.
- Move the Stick or router to improve the wireless path, where practical.
- Confirm the streaming plan and the selected content support the resolution you want; a connection alone cannot provide a format the plan or video does not offer.
- If wireless conditions are the problem, consider Ethernet only after confirming your specific model supports a compatible adapter. Amazon’s model guide identifies which devices use a separately sold Ethernet adapter. A wired connection can address network conditions; it is not a guaranteed upgrade to menu speed.
An HDMI cable does not fix weak Wi-Fi. Check HDMI connections when the issue is 4K playback or picture output, not as a general buffering remedy.

How do I get 4K or HDR working on my Fire TV Stick?
When resolution, HDR, Dolby Vision, or surround sound is missing, check the whole signal path: Fire TV model, content and subscription plan, TV, HDMI port and cable, and any receiver or soundbar between the Stick and TV. Use Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics if the tool is available. Amazon says it checks connected equipment’s supported maximum resolution and refresh rate, HDR and Dolby Vision support, and surround-sound formats (Amazon’s 4K and HDR troubleshooting guide).
- Confirm the selected HDMI port supports the required format and that a receiver or soundbar can pass it through.
- For relevant 4K setups, Amazon recommends a high-speed HDMI cable and an HDCP 2.2-compatible port or pass-through.
- Make sure the title and streaming plan provide the intended resolution or HDR format.
- Change the Fire TV display selection only after checking those compatibility requirements.
Amazon documents a specific exception: a Fire TV device may stream at 1080p 60 Hz for smoother playback with a 4K 30 Hz Dolby Vision TV; its support guidance says a 4K 60 Hz selection may be set under Display & Sounds. This is a compatibility case, not a universal recommendation to force 4K 60 Hz.
