For better privacy, review three separate controls at Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings: Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, and Interest-based Ads. They cover different kinds of data, and turning one off does not stop every form of data processing or remove all ads. For performance problems, start with a restart, software update, storage check, or troubleshooting for the affected app or network. Amazon does not publish a general speed gain for these steps, and menu labels can vary by model and software version.
Which Fire TV privacy settings should you change?
Open Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings and review each control according to what you want to limit. Amazon describes these settings as separate controls with different data scopes; none is a universal “stop tracking” switch.

| Setting | What it covers | What switching it off affects—and what continues |
|---|---|---|
| Device Usage Data | Operating-system information about using the device and its features, including home-screen navigation, selecting settings, and using apps or services. | Stops processing of this device-usage data for customized marketing offers and product improvement. It does not stop processing needed to provide device features, determine whether marketing offers appear, interest-based advertising, or data related to Amazon services such as Prime Video. Offers may be less relevant. |
| Collect App Usage Data | Amazon’s collection of information about opening and closing third-party apps and how long they are used. | Controls Amazon’s collection of that third-party app-use information. It is distinct from Device Usage Data and does not establish what the app provider collects under its own policies. |
| Interest-based Ads | A resettable advertising ID made available to apps on certain Amazon devices. | Instructs apps using that ID not to use it to build advertising profiles or target you with interest-based ads on the device. It does not mean that all ads disappear. |
These descriptions and menu paths come from Amazon’s Fire TV privacy FAQ. If you want to limit more than one type of collection, review all three controls rather than assuming one setting covers the others.

On certain Fire TV smart TVs, Amazon says privacy settings may also be managed through the Amazon account at Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy. The settings are device-specific: changing one device’s settings does not apply them to every Amazon device.

What to change when Fire TV feels slow or runs into problems
Treat performance steps as troubleshooting for a particular symptom, not guaranteed speed upgrades. Amazon’s help material does not quantify a general improvement from changing settings. Menu locations and available options vary by model and software version; use the device’s own Settings menu and model-specific support information if a path differs.

| Problem | First step | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| General glitches or an outdated system | Check for a software update, then restart the device if needed. Amazon places software update and restart in the My Fire TV or Device & Software area. | These are routine troubleshooting steps, not a promised speed increase. The precise menu label depends on the device. |
| Low available storage | Check available storage in My Fire TV or Device & Software. If supported, review Applications > Auto Offload. | Auto Offload manages storage; it is not a privacy control and may not appear on every model or profile configuration. |
| One app crashes or behaves badly | Use the device’s current app troubleshooting instructions to check that app’s cache or data. | Clearing app data can remove local app state. Check the app-specific consequences before doing it. |
| Wi-Fi trouble or buffering | Follow Fire TV network troubleshooting for connection and buffering problems. | Privacy toggles are not a fix for network performance or stream quality. |
Amazon’s Fire TV navigation help identifies the settings areas for updates, storage, restart, sleep, and factory reset. Its Fire TV support index links to troubleshooting for app crashes, clearing app cache and data, network and buffering issues, and software updates. Follow the current instructions for your device rather than assuming the same steps or labels apply to every Fire TV.
Use Auto Offload only if storage is the issue
Amazon says Auto Offload can free storage by removing infrequently used apps when storage is low. According to Amazon’s Auto Offload help page, unused apps may be offloaded after 60 days; the page does not state a year for this guidance. Login information and preferences are saved so an app can be downloaded again. You can manage the option at Applications > Auto Offload if it is available on your device and profile.

Keep factory reset as a last resort
Amazon lists factory reset alongside other device settings, but it resets the device. Do not treat it as a routine first-line setting change: try the lower-impact troubleshooting relevant to the problem first, and consult device-specific instructions before proceeding. Amazon’s navigation help identifies where reset options are grouped.
