Perseverance has the more flexible mast camera: its Mastcam-Z can zoom and focus, while Curiosity’s Mastcam uses two fixed focal lengths, 34 mm and 100 mm. But NASA lists both systems at roughly 1600 × 1200 pixels, and those dimensions do not establish that one rover takes better images overall. Their cameras are designed for different tasks, from stereo terrain views to close-up science and navigation.
How the main mast cameras differ
Each rover carries a pair of color cameras on its mast for viewing terrain and other features at a distance. The key distinction is how each pair frames a target.

Which rover has zoom?
Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z has zoom, allowing its operators to adjust framing without relying on a different fixed-focal-length camera. Curiosity’s Mastcam instead offers two fixed options: the 34 mm camera and the longer 100 mm camera. This is a difference in framing flexibility; it is not, by itself, evidence that one system produces sharper or better images.

Yes. Both rovers’ paired mast cameras support stereo views, which help convey terrain depth. NASA lists a 24.5 cm baseline for Curiosity’s Mastcam pair and a 24.2 cm separation for Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z pair. Those closely similar distances describe camera placement, not a comparative image-quality result.

What the pixel figures do—and do not—tell you
NASA gives approximate maximum dimensions of 1600 × 1200 pixels for Curiosity’s Mastcam images and lists 1600 × 1200 pixels for Mastcam-Z. These specifications are useful for describing the systems, but they are not a complete measure of image quality. They do not establish how the cameras compare under the same lighting, distance, exposure, or imaging settings, and the cited specifications are not a controlled side-by-side test.
For a practical comparison, consider the task: zoom and framing, stereo terrain context, video, close-up texture, or remote scientific examination. A single pixel count cannot answer all of those questions.

Curiosity: MAHLI
Curiosity’s Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) is mounted at the end of the robotic arm. It is used for close-up views of minerals, textures, and structures in Martian rocks—not as a replacement for the mast cameras’ broader terrain views. NASA Science describes MAHLI and its role.

Remote science cameras are part of larger instruments
Curiosity: ChemCam Remote Micro-Imager
Curiosity’s ChemCam includes the Remote Micro-Imager, a telescopic camera on the mast for imaging distant targets. It belongs to the ChemCam science suite; it is not simply another general-purpose Mastcam.
Perseverance: SuperCam
Perseverance’s SuperCam combines a camera with a laser and spectrometers for remote examination of rocks and soils. Its camera therefore serves a science-instrument role that differs from Mastcam-Z’s panoramic and terrain imaging. NASA describes both rovers’ instrument roles on its Curiosity instruments page and Perseverance instruments page.

Navigation and operations cameras matter too
The mast systems are only one part of each rover’s imaging hardware. Curiosity’s camera configuration includes science, navigation, hazard-avoidance, and descent-imaging cameras; NASA described it as having 17 cameras in a 2012 overview. That count reflects Curiosity’s configuration as described there, and should not be compared directly with a differently categorized Perseverance camera list. NASA’s Curiosity camera overview.

Does Perseverance have better cameras?
The official specifications establish a specific advantage in flexibility: Mastcam-Z can zoom, while Curiosity’s Mastcam pair has two fixed focal lengths. They also show that both systems provide color and stereo imaging and have similar listed maximum image dimensions. They do not establish a universal image-quality winner. The more useful answer depends on what you want to compare: Mastcam framing, close-up science, remote examination, or navigation and operations imaging.
