For most home Ethernet links capped at 1 Gbps, Cat 5e is sufficient. If your internet plan and wired equipment support multi-gigabit speeds, choose Cat 6 or better; for a new copper run carrying 10 Gbps over a long distance, Cat 6A is the more dependable choice. The cable only carries the connection: it cannot raise the speed limit imposed by your plan, router, modem, switch, or device.
First, what do you mean by “internet cable”?
People use “internet cable” to mean two different things. An Ethernet cable connects devices inside your home—for example, a computer to a router or a router to a switch. The connection entering your building is a separate access link, which may use fibre, coaxial cable, or copper-line DSL. The European Commission identifies coaxial broadband and DSL as access technologies, while ITU-T G.9930 covers point-to-point fibre in premises. Those provider connections use different equipment and are not interchangeable with an Ethernet patch cable.

Which Ethernet cable should you choose?
Match the cable category to the fastest Ethernet link you need and the length of the run. NETGEAR’s support guidance, updated July 7, 2025, says Cat 5e is suitable for service or wired devices at up to 1 Gbps, and recommends Cat 6 or better when the ISP or wired LAN devices support multi-gigabit speeds. | Category | Capabilities listed by Intel | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Cat 5e | 1GBASE-T and 2.5GBASE-T up to 100 m | A practical choice for many gigabit home links. NETGEAR’s recommendation covers speeds up to 1 Gbps. |
| Cat 6 | 1GBASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T, and 5GBASE-T up to 100 m; 10GBASE-T up to 55 m | A reasonable choice for multi-gig equipment, especially when the run is not a long 10 Gbps link. |
| Cat 6A | 1GBASE-T, 2.5GBASE-T, 5GBASE-T, and 10GBASE-T up to 100 m | Consider it for a new copper run that needs 10 Gbps over a longer distance. |
These distances are channel capabilities in Intel’s technical comparison, not guarantees for every installed cable. For Cat 6 10GBASE-T reach, published guidance differs slightly in rounded figures: Intel lists 55 m, while Eaton gives about 164 ft (roughly 50 m). Use 55 m as the comparison figure here, not as a promise that any installation will support 10 Gbps at that length. Intel’s Ethernet cable category guide · Eaton’s Ethernet cable comparison
How do speed, ports, and distance limit the result?
A wired connection negotiates a link speed supported by the cable and both connected Ethernet ports. The internet connection itself is also limited by your subscribed service and the capabilities of your modem, router, switch, and device. If any part supports only 1 Gbps, installing a higher-category cable will not make that link run at 2.5 or 10 Gbps.

- Cat 6 performance at a Cat5e price but with higher bandwidth
- High Performance Cat6, 30 AWG, RJ45 Ethernet Patch Cable provides universal connectivity for LAN network components such as PCs,computer servers, printers, routers, switch boxes, network media players,NAS,VoIP phones
- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- Check the target speed. Identify the service speed and the Ethernet port speeds on the devices at both ends of the cable.
- Check the run length. Cat 6 can support 10GBASE-T over a shorter channel than Cat 6A; for other listed rates, Intel shows 100 m for Cat 5e, Cat 6, and Cat 6A at 1GBASE-T and 2.5GBASE-T.
- Account for the installation. Category ratings describe capabilities, not a guarantee for every cable, connector, or installation. Shielding is not an automatic speed upgrade for ordinary home use; choose cable construction to suit a real installation need.
- Consider how the cable will be used. A movable patch cable connecting nearby devices is a different purchase from cable intended for a permanent run.
Will a new Ethernet cable fix slow internet?
Only if the existing cable or link is the limiting factor. Before replacing it, check the negotiated Ethernet speed shown by your device or router, verify that both ports support the speed you expect, and inspect the cable and connectors for damage. A slow result can also come from the broadband service, router, Wi-Fi, switch, or device. A faster-rated cable cannot diagnose or fix those other limits.

How do I choose the right Ethernet cable for my needs?
- Connecting gigabit-or-slower equipment? Cat 5e is generally sufficient for a link up to 1 Gbps. NETGEAR also says Intel’s comparison lists Cat 5e for 2.5GBASE-T up to 100 m, but its own recommendation is Cat 5e for service or devices up to 1 Gbps; choose based on the speed your complete setup is intended to support.
- Building a multi-gig link? Choose Cat 6 or better, as NETGEAR advises, and confirm that the ports at both ends support the target rate.
- Need 10 Gbps over a long copper channel? Cat 6A is the more dependable full-distance option in Intel’s comparison, with 10GBASE-T listed to 100 m; Cat 6 is listed to 55 m.
- Buying for a specific installation? Compare the required rate and length with the cable specification, connector compatibility, and whether you need a patch cable or permanent-installation cable. Pay for extra category only when the ports, link length, or future requirement call for it.
For context, ITU-T’s July 2024 G.9930 recommendation addresses point-to-point fibre in premises, not Ethernet patch-cable selection. Its nominal 10 Gbit/s downstream and upstream rates and fibre lengths—at least 1 km at the physical layer and 2 km at the data-link layer—describe a different network segment, not a reason to buy Cat 6A.
