The clearest documented Echo speakers with an AUX input are the Echo (3rd generation), Echo Plus (2nd generation) and Echo Studio (2019 release). The first two have a 3.5 mm jack described as switchable between line-in and line-out; the 2019 Studio has a 3.5 mm analog/mini-optical line-in. A recent report says Alexa voice control for AUX input was disabled on several older Echo models, so a physical input and the ability to switch to it by voice are separate questions.
Which Echo models have an AUX input?
Model and generation matter: “Echo” by itself is not enough to establish whether a device accepts audio. The best-supported hardware list is below.

What does AUX input do?
Line-in carries audio into the Echo from an external source so the Echo can play that source through its speaker. Line-out does the opposite: it sends audio from the Echo to separate equipment. A jack described as switchable can serve either direction, but direction and current control behavior should not be confused.

On the Echo (3rd generation) and Echo Plus (2nd generation), the cited model-specific guidance describes the 3.5 mm jack as switchable. The 2019 Echo Studio’s documented combo jack accepts analog AUX or mini-optical input. Amazon’s specification confirms the port formats, but does not provide a complete compatibility chart for source devices.

What cable or source do you need?
- Analog source: A 3.5 mm stereo AUX cable is appropriate only if the source provides a compatible analog audio output and the exact Echo generation supports line-in.
- Optical source with Echo Studio (2019): The Studio’s combo input includes mini-optical; use a compatible mini-TOSLINK connection and confirm the source’s optical output and cable ends.
- Before buying a cable: Verify the Echo’s exact generation, the source output type, both connector ends and the currently available way to activate input. A matching plug alone does not establish compatibility.
Does AUX input still work after Alexa’s control change?
Ars Technica reported on October 6, 2026 that Amazon disabled Alexa voice control of AUX input on the Echo Plus (2nd generation), Echo (3rd generation), Echo Studio (2019) and Echo (4th generation). The report says voice requests such as “play from line in” or “set aux input” no longer work on the affected models.
That is a report about voice control, not evidence that Amazon removed the physical ports or that wired audio playback stopped. The available sources do not establish, model by model, whether a wired signal still plays, what manual or app controls remain, or whether behavior differs by region or software version. If buying a used or refurbished unit for line-in, confirm the exact generation and current activation behavior with the seller before relying on that feature.
