1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe most comfortable display is not the brightest or the most colorful one. Match screen brightness to the light in the room, enlarge text until you can read upright without squinting, increase contrast only as far as characters remain comfortable, and remove reflections. Keep a monitor about an arm’s length away with your gaze slightly downward, then use regular distance-viewing breaks.
There is no evidence-based brightness percentage, contrast ratio, color temperature, or dark-mode setting that works for every screen and person. Treat these controls as adjustable ergonomics, not medical prescriptions.

Start with the settings that solve the actual problem
Eye discomfort can come from several different causes: a screen that is much brighter than its surroundings, small type that makes you lean forward, reflections that wash out letters, or a viewing position that keeps your eyes focused close for too long. Changing the wrong control can make another problem worse. Use this order: room lighting and glare, brightness, text size, contrast, then viewing distance and breaks.
| Control or change | Problem it addresses | How to judge the result | Cost and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen brightness | A display that glows conspicuously brighter or looks dimmer than the room | White areas should not look like a lamp, and dark areas should remain visible without squinting | Free; the right level changes with daylight and evening light |
| Text size or scaling | Squinting, leaning forward, or moving closer to read | Read normal text while sitting upright at your normal distance | Free; larger text may show less content on screen |
| Contrast | Letters blending into their background | Character edges are distinct without harsh halos or shimmering | Free; excessive contrast can feel glaring |
| Room and screen position | Reflections from windows or overhead lights | Turn off the source or move your head slightly; the reflected patch should not cross the text area | Usually free; may require rearranging a desk or blinds |
| Matte anti-glare filter | Persistent reflections after lighting and positioning changes | Glare is reduced while text remains sharp at your usual distance | Optional purchase; must match the exact display dimensions and model |
| Viewing distance and angle | Neck strain, forward leaning, or sustained close focus | Start around 20–26 inches (roughly arm’s length) with eyes looking slightly downward | Free; personal comfort and display size still matter |
Set brightness to the room, not to a percentage
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) states: “Adjust your screen brightness to match the level of light around you.” A screen that is dramatically brighter than a dim room can be harder to view, while a screen that is too dim in a bright room may force you to strain to distinguish details. The useful target is relative balance, not a number on a slider.

Adjust it in the real workspace
- Sit where you normally work and turn on the room lights, open blinds, or use the evening lighting you actually use.
- Display a mostly white page and lower or raise brightness until the page no longer looks like a glowing panel compared with the wall or desk around it.
- Read ordinary text and inspect a dark image. If shadows disappear, raise brightness slightly; if white areas feel dazzling, lower it or add suitable room light.
- Recheck at another time of day. Daylight, cloudy conditions, and nighttime lamps can require different settings.
On Windows, the usual path is Settings > System > Display; on macOS it is Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. External monitors often have physical buttons or an on-screen display menu, and their brightness control can be independent of the operating system. Labels and paths can vary by device.
Make text large enough before increasing anything else
NIOSH guidance notes that font size can contribute to eye strain and suggests enlarging text so you do not squint, lean toward the screen, or move closer. Text scaling is often more effective than pushing brightness or contrast higher.
Use system scaling and app zoom
- For a desktop, increase the operating system’s display scaling until menus and labels can be read from your normal distance. Windows exposes this under Settings > System > Display > Scale; macOS provides display resolution choices under System Settings > Displays.
- For a web page, use the browser’s zoom control rather than sitting closer. A larger page can be preferable to a tiny “more content” layout.
- In individual applications, choose a larger document or interface font when available. Keep line spacing and character weight comfortable; bold text is not automatically easier to read.
After enlarging type, move the monitor back if necessary so your head and neck remain upright. If text is still difficult to distinguish at a comfortable size and distance, check your vision correction rather than compensating indefinitely with a brighter screen.

Increase contrast carefully
AAO guidance suggests trying increased contrast when characters are hard to see. Contrast should separate foreground from background, not create a white-hot background or colored fringes around letters. Raise it in small steps, read both black-on-white and white-on-dark content, and stop when edges are clear without discomfort.

High-contrast or accessibility themes can help people with particular visual needs, but a theme that works for one person may look harsh to another. If thin text shimmers, colored text disappears, or dark text looks gray, try a different theme, font weight, or application rather than assuming maximum contrast is best.
Remove reflections before buying a filter
Glare is partly an environmental problem. A window behind you, a ceiling fixture above the screen, or a glossy panel can place a bright reflection over the text. AAO and NIH ergonomics guidance both emphasize changing the screen’s position and controlling windows or lights.
- Rotate the monitor so a window is to the side rather than directly behind you or in front of you.
- Close blinds, reposition a desk lamp, or diffuse an overhead fixture that appears in the screen.
- Clean fingerprints and dust from the panel; a dirty glossy surface scatters light and reduces apparent clarity.
- Check the display while wearing your normal glasses. Reflections can come from lenses as well as the panel.
If reflections remain after those changes, a matte anti-glare filter is an optional physical aid. Confirm the exact diagonal size, aspect ratio, bezel clearance, attachment method, and display model before ordering. A filter can reduce reflections; it is not a general cure for dryness, focusing problems, or every form of eye strain, and it should not be presented as protection from eye disease.
Use a comfortable distance and downward gaze
AAO computer-use advice describes about 25 inches, or roughly arm’s length. The NIH Office of Research Services gives an approximate range of 20–26 inches. These are starting points, not a rigid measurement: a large monitor, small laptop, high-resolution interface, or personal vision needs may justify adjustment.

Position a desktop monitor
- Place the screen far enough away that normal text is readable without leaning forward; begin near 20–26 inches.
- Set the top of the usable display near eye level or slightly below it so your gaze falls a little downward. Do not force your chin toward your chest.
- Center the monitor in front of you if you use it as the primary screen. If you use two screens, place the one used most directly in front and turn your chair rather than repeatedly twisting your neck.
- Raise text size instead of moving the screen closer when content is hard to read.
For a laptop, a stand can provide a better eye angle, but an external keyboard and pointing device may then be needed to keep your shoulders relaxed. The goal is a comfortable combination of screen distance, gaze, and input-device position.
Build breaks into near-screen work
Settings cannot remove the need to look away. AAO’s 20-20-20 advice is to look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes. NIOSH also recommends regular breaks and reports a finding concerning supplemental hourly five-minute breaks. A break means changing visual demand, not merely switching from a document to a phone held at the same distance.
- Set a repeating reminder, timer, or calendar cue for distance viewing.
- During the break, look across the room or out a window and allow normal blinking.
- For long work sessions, stand, walk, or perform a non-screen task periodically; keep the exact schedule practical enough to follow.
Frequent screen use can reduce blinking and contribute to dryness. Deliberately blinking fully during reading may improve comfort, but persistent burning, fluctuating vision, pain, or headaches needs professional assessment rather than another display adjustment.

Night-time display modes may change the color of the screen and can be useful for reducing exposure to bright light near bedtime; that is a sleep-timing consideration, not proof of a universal eye-comfort benefit. The reviewed guidance does not establish one color temperature, warm-mode strength, or dark-mode setting for everyone. Choose a mode only if its appearance helps you read comfortably in your actual environment.

The AAO, CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and NIH ergonomics guidance agree on adjustable practices, but they do not prescribe one calibrated display profile. The following values should be understood as guidance with stated limits.
| Item | Supported guidance | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Match screen brightness to surrounding light (AAO, 2024 guidance) | No universal percentage or luminance value |
| Contrast | Try increasing it when characters are difficult to distinguish | No single contrast ratio for every panel, room, or viewer |
| Text size | Enlarge it to avoid squinting, leaning, or moving closer (NIOSH) | No universal point size; viewing distance and visual correction matter |
| Monitor distance | About 25 inches from AAO advice; approximately 20–26 inches from NIH ergonomics guidance | No requirement that every screen or person use one exact distance |
| Breaks | 20-20-20 distance viewing (AAO); regular breaks (NIOSH) | A guarantee that breaks alone will resolve symptoms |
| Color temperature and dark mode | Use whichever appearance is comfortable for the task and lighting | A validated setting that prevents eye strain for everyone |
Troubleshoot by symptom
“The screen feels painfully bright.”
Lower brightness while seated in the current room, reduce nearby reflections, and add or reposition soft ambient light. A very dim room combined with a bright screen is often the mismatch; lowering the slider alone may leave surrounding objects too dark.
“I keep leaning forward.”
Increase text scaling or application zoom first. Then verify that the monitor is near the 20–26-inch starting range and that your vision correction is current.

“Letters look washed out.”
Look for a reflection across the text, clean the panel, and adjust the screen angle or blinds. Increase contrast modestly only after glare is controlled.
“High contrast gives me halos or headaches.”
Reduce contrast, choose a less stark theme, and test ordinary text at a larger size. Comfort matters more than reaching a maximum slider value.
“A matte filter did not solve the problem.”
Check that the filter matches the display and is installed without bubbles or misalignment, then reassess room lighting. If discomfort is dryness, focusing difficulty, pain, or persistent headache rather than reflection, a filter addresses the wrong cause.

When to seek eye-care advice
Display adjustments are comfort measures, not diagnosis or treatment. Arrange an eye examination if symptoms persist despite sensible settings and breaks, or if you have pain, ongoing blurred or double vision, marked light sensitivity, or headaches that interfere with work. AAO guidance specifically advises consulting an ophthalmologist when symptoms continue.
