For heavily soiled, dishwasher-safe cookware, use the machine’s Heavy, Pots & Pans, or closest intensive cycle, plus detergent made for automatic dishwashers. The right cycle name, temperature, and detergent dose depend on your dishwasher model and the cookware’s care instructions.
Which cycle should you choose for oily cookware?
Match the wash to the soil. A pan with a substantial greasy film or stubborn food residue generally calls for the most intensive suitable cycle your dishwasher offers. Look for labels such as Heavy, Pots & Pans, or Intensive; follow your owner’s manual if it recommends a different program.

Cycle labels and temperatures are not standardized across brands. For example, Whirlpool describes its Heavy Duty cycle for pots, pans, and heavily soiled items (Whirlpool’s dishwasher guidance). Bosch Home Appliances India describes an Intensive 70°C program for oily and masala-stained kadhai, pots, and pans (Bosch Home Appliances India). These are examples for particular manufacturers and product lines, not settings that every dishwasher provides.

Dishwasher detergent contains surfactants that help lift greasy food residues and keep them suspended in the wash water. Do not use hand dish soap in the machine: it can produce excessive suds and interfere with operation (Whirlpool’s guidance on detergent use). Fresh detergent may perform better; Whirlpool recommends keeping it tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Its guidance also recommends pre-measured tablets or packs, but that is not proof they outperform every other format in every dishwasher or for every soil load.
No cited head-to-head test establishes one detergent brand or format as the best choice for all oily cookware. Choose a product labeled for automatic dishwashers and use the amount specified for your machine and product.

Load the pan so the wash can reach it
- Check the pan’s care instructions. Confirm that the cookware is marked dishwasher-safe or that its maker’s care guide permits machine washing. Heat, spray, and detergent can damage some cookware.
- Scrape off food. Remove solid food residue before loading; scraping is not a substitute for the wash cycle.
- Position the pan for spray access. Face the soiled surface toward the spray and leave room for water to circulate. Check that the pan does not block the spray arms.
- Choose the intensive cycle when soil warrants it. Select Heavy, Pots & Pans, or the closest intensive option for a heavily soiled load, unless your manual advises otherwise.
- Add the detergent as directed. Use automatic-dishwasher detergent and follow the product label and machine instructions.
When does rinse aid help?
Rinse aid helps water run off dishes and supports drying. It is an optional aid for runoff and drying, not a replacement for detergent or an intensive wash cycle when cookware is heavily soiled. Bosch discusses rinse aid in its dishwasher guidance (Bosch dishwasher care).
Why the manual matters for temperature and results
Incoming water temperature recommendations are model-specific. Whirlpool says 120°F (about 49°C) is the optimal temperature for water entering its dishwashers (Whirlpool’s dishwasher guidance). Treat that as Whirlpool’s recommendation, not a universal setting or a reason to change your home’s water temperature without checking your appliance instructions.

- FRESH SCENT DISHWASHER PACS: Leaves dishes clean and smelling fresh after every cycle.
- 2-IN-1 GREASE-FIGHTING FORMULA: Combines powerful dishwasher detergent with built-in rinse aid to help break down grease and food residue for sparkling clean dishes.
- NO PRE-RINSE NEEDED: Designed to tackle tough food messes without pre-rinsing, saving time and water.
- POWERFUL CLEAN IN EVERY LOAD: Pacs dissolve during the wash cycle to help remove grease, stuck-on food, and everyday messes.
- EASY TO USE: No measuring and no mess. Simply place one pac into the dishwasher detergent dispenser and start the cycle.
Results also depend on the pan’s material and condition, how heavily it is soiled, how it is loaded, and the detergent instructions. Manufacturer guidance supports choosing an appropriate intensive cycle and automatic-dishwasher detergent, but it does not establish one universal cycle, dose, or winning brand for every machine and pan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If greasy residue remains
First check that the cookware is dishwasher-safe, that spray arms can rotate freely, and that detergent was added according to the manual and package. For residue or grease buildup inside the appliance itself, dishwasher cleaner is a separate maintenance product: Bosch recommends periodic use for appliance maintenance, not as a substitute for the cycle and detergent used to wash oily cookware (Bosch dishwasher care).
