Bitcoin and Ether can move together, but their prices respond to different forces: Bitcoin’s monetary-scarcity narrative and Ethereum network demand, fees, staking, and supply changes. Both are speculative and volatile, and neither can be called safer or more profitable from the evidence available. A fair volatility comparison needs the same measurement method and time window; older figures are historical observations, not current rankings.
Bitcoin and Ethereum are different assets with different jobs
Bitcoin is the native asset of the Bitcoin network, a peer-to-peer digital currency system that uses proof-of-work consensus. Its protocol sets an eventual supply limit of 21 million. Ethereum is a programmable application network that uses proof-of-stake; its native asset is Ether (ETH), which pays for transactions and computation and helps secure the network. That distinction matters when considering price drivers. Bitcoin demand narratives often center on monetary scarcity and settlement. Ether demand can also reflect activity on Ethereum applications: users need ETH to pay gas fees, and the cost varies with the computation required and demand for network space. These are explanatory differences, not a formula that predicts either asset’s price.

Which is more volatile?
There is no timeless answer. Volatility depends on the observation window and calculation, and the available historical estimates do not establish which asset is more volatile now.

In a 2023 analysis, CME Group reported annualized volatility of daily price movements of 42% for Bitcoin and around 59% for Ether in the period it discussed. Those are period-specific estimates, not current readings or forecasts. CME also described the assets as correlated while discussing differences in their volatility and the Ether-to-Bitcoin ratio. Correlation and relative volatility can change across market regimes and measurement windows. CME Group’s analysis does not make its historical estimates a present-day comparison.
Any claim that one has been more volatile or performed better should name the dates and use matched data and the same method for both assets. A separate observation from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) illustrates why dates matter: its 2025 report described a 34% Ether price decline over the period it covered through June 2025, followed by a rebound connected with the Pectra upgrade in May. That is a specific Ether observation, not a matched Bitcoin comparison or evidence of a lasting ranking. ESMA’s 2025 report covers that period.

Why prices can respond differently
Bitcoin: scarcity and settlement narratives
Bitcoin’s fixed eventual supply limit is a protocol design feature, but scarcity alone does not determine its market price. Demand, market conditions, and investor expectations also matter. Bitcoin remains speculative, so its supply limit should not be read as a price floor or protection against losses.
Ether: network use, fees, and supply changes
Ethereum users pay gas fees in ETH. Fees vary with network-wide demand and the computation a transaction requires; the protocol burns the base fee. At the same time, validators receive ETH issuance. Because burning can offset issuance to varying degrees depending on activity and protocol parameters, Ether supply can increase or decrease. The cited material does not establish a fixed Ether supply cap, and it would be inaccurate to describe Ether as always deflationary. Ethereum.org explains gas and fees, and its issuance page describes issuance and burning.

Network use and supply mechanics can shape how people think about ETH, but they do not isolate the cause of a price move. Network activity, protocol changes, and market-wide conditions may interact; the mechanics are not a reliable short-term price model.
What are the risks of Bitcoin vs. Ethereum?
The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy stated in its September 9, 2024 bulletin: “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments.” Prices can fluctuate widely, so neither should be treated as stable or as a dependable hedge. - Custody and platform risk: Direct ownership can involve trading platforms, wallets, and private keys. The SEC’s Bitcoin risk alert discusses theft, exchange failure, volatility, and the absence of bank-deposit or comparable securities-account protections for directly held Bitcoin. - Ethereum network risk: Fee and issuance mechanics depend on network activity and protocol rules. Staking involves validator participation and potential penalties, which are operational risks distinct from ETH’s market-price volatility.
- Comparability risk: A claim about which asset performed better or was more volatile is meaningful only when the period and calculation are specified. Separate historical figures should not be treated as an apples-to-apples ranking.
Direct ownership versus ETP exposure
Holding crypto directly may require managing wallets, private keys, and platform relationships. A wallet device can help with key storage, but it does not remove price volatility, backup responsibilities, user-error risk, or risks associated with buying and selling.
An exchange-traded product (ETP) can provide price exposure without some direct wallet and key-handling tasks. It still carries exposure to the underlying asset’s price, and its share price may deviate from that asset. Product structure also matters: the SEC bulletin distinguishes spot crypto commodity trusts from futures ETPs, so a spot crypto ETP should not casually be described as a conventional registered investment-company ETF. Product availability, rules, and protections vary by jurisdiction and can change; check current documents for the specific product.

How to make a fair comparison
- Choose one time window. Compare the same start and end dates for Bitcoin and Ether.
- Use the same measure. For volatility, use the same return frequency, annualization method, and data source for both assets. For performance, compare returns across the same dates.
- Separate market movement from network design. Bitcoin’s supply limit and Ethereum’s fee, issuance, and staking mechanisms explain differences in function, but do not by themselves explain a particular price change.
- Compare the exposure you would actually hold. Direct assets and ETP shares have different custody, tracking, and product considerations.
The cited material does not establish synchronized current prices, returns, or matched-window volatility. Without those data, it cannot support a present-day volatility winner or a forecast.
