If you already have IT support, administration, or networking experience and want a broad security credential, consider CompTIA Security+ instead. Neither credential guarantees a job; choose based on your background and the requirements in job listings for your target role and location.
Choose based on your starting point
| Your situation | Option to consider first | Why | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| No IT or security experience; wants a structured start | ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) | ISC2 presents CC as a starting point for newcomers and provides related learning and exam resources. (ISC2) | Current objectives, eligibility, cost, and study resources available in your location. |
| IT support, systems, or networking background; wants broad security coverage | CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) | It covers security concepts and operations, and CompTIA publishes detailed objectives. CompTIA recommends IT administration and hands-on security experience. (CompTIA) | Whether local listings for your target job ask for Security+, another credential, a degree, or practical experience. |
| Already administers infrastructure or works in security operations | Consider ISC2 SSCP | Its focus is operational security; full certification requires relevant experience. (ISC2) | Whether you can document qualifying experience in an eligible domain. |
| Several years in security or pursuing senior security work | Consider CISSP later | Its experience requirements make it an experienced-professional credential. (ISC2) | Current experience, endorsement, and substitution rules. |
| Building toward cloud security after gaining IT and cybersecurity experience | Consider CCSP later | It specializes in cloud security and has substantial experience requirements. (ISC2) | Current experience substitutions and the requirements for your intended cloud-security role. |
These are starting points, not a universal ranking. The certifying organizations describe exam scope and eligibility; the information available here does not establish that employers in every location prefer one credential over another.

What CC and Security+ offer beginners
ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC)
CC is the best-supported first step for someone with no background because ISC2 explicitly identifies it as a starting point for people new to cybersecurity. Its learning and exam resources can give a beginner a structured way into the subject. That positioning does not establish that employers prefer CC over Security+ or that passing CC alone is enough to get hired.

CompTIA Security+ SY0-701
Security+ covers a wider foundation across five exam domains. CompTIA’s version 5.0 objectives, published in 2023, specify a maximum of 90 questions and a 90-minute exam, with multiple-choice and performance-based questions. The domain weights are exam specifications, not employment statistics:
#1 Best Overall
- General Security Concepts: 12%
- Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations: 22%
- Security Architecture: 18%
- Security Operations: 28%
- Security Program Management and Oversight: 20%
CompTIA recommends at least two years of IT administration experience with a security focus, hands-on technical information-security experience, and broad security knowledge. These are recommendations, not formal prerequisites in the material reviewed. Being eligible to sit an exam is not the same as being ready for it; a beginner may find it more efficient to build foundational IT knowledge first. Why SSCP, CISSP, and CCSP are usually later choices
ISC2 SSCP: operational security
SSCP covers practical security administration and operations, including access controls, risk monitoring and analysis, incident response and recovery, cryptography, network security, and systems and application security. ISC2 requires one year of relevant full-time experience in one or more domains for full certification; a qualifying degree can satisfy the requirement under its rules. Candidates who pass before meeting the experience requirement can become an Associate of ISC2 and earn the required experience afterward. (ISC2 SSCP experience requirements)
Rank #2
ISC2 CISSP: experienced security professionals
CISSP requires at least five years of cumulative full-time experience across two or more of its eight domains. A qualifying degree or approved credential may satisfy up to one year. Someone who passes the exam before meeting the experience requirement may become an Associate of ISC2 while gaining the required experience. Those requirements make CISSP a poor default recommendation for someone just starting out. (ISC2 CISSP experience requirements)

ISC2 CCSP: cloud-security specialization
CCSP is aimed at cloud security professionals. Its experience requirement is five years of cumulative full-time IT work, including three years in cybersecurity and one year in a CCSP domain, subject to specified substitutions. Candidates who pass without the required experience can become an Associate of ISC2 and have a defined period to gain it. For most entrants, CCSP makes more sense after building IT and cybersecurity experience. (ISC2 CCSP experience requirements)

How to make the choice in your local job market
- Pick a target role. Compare the requirements for help-desk or junior IT work, a SOC role, or another security position. An IT support job can build troubleshooting and systems experience useful for a later security move.
- Review current local listings. Look for repeated credential requirements, but also note requests for hands-on experience, technical skills, or a degree. The certifying organizations’ descriptions do not establish employer preferences across locations or roles.
- Match the exam scope to the work. For a security operations path, compare the credential’s tested domains with the tasks and skills listed in relevant postings.
- Check the full commitment before paying. Verify the current exam objectives, eligibility, price, and ongoing maintenance requirements for your location. These details can change, and no current prices are established here.
If you are starting from zero, begin with CC or build IT fundamentals through support, systems, or networking work before taking on a broader exam such as Security+. If you already have those foundations, compare Security+ with the credentials actually named in local listings. Treat any certification as evidence of learning—not as a substitute for practical ability or a job offer.
