Old School RuneScape is nearly 20 years old only if you mean the 2007 game version it preserves. The live Old School RuneScape service launched in 2013, making it about 13 years old in 2026. That distinction matters: Jagex is not simply maintaining a 2007 time capsule. It continues to develop the game, while giving players a role in approving proposed additions. The evidence points to a game with momentum and investment—but “its best years are ahead” is a possibility, not a proven forecast.
How old is Old School RuneScape?
There are three dates to keep straight. RuneScape began in 2001. Old School RuneScape (OSRS) preserves a version of the game from 2007. The OSRS service itself began in 2013, after player demand and community voting. So in 2026, the preserved era is about 19 years old, while the live service is about 13. Jagex’s company history identifies 2013 as OSRS’s birth; PC Gamer’s history of the game’s return describes the 2007 version it runs.

Even the choice of 2007 was a twist. Jagex senior communications manager Danni Amos told PC Gamer that players had asked for the 2006 version, but Jagex could not find it in its archive. An employee found a 2007 server, which the team booted up to see whether it worked. The resulting game became a fresh service built around an older snapshot—not a launch that happened in 2007.

Why is Old School RuneScape still popular?
OSRS keeps the recognizable systems and feel of its old-school foundation, but it is not frozen in that state. Jagex continues to add substantial content, and players have a say in whether proposed additions make it into the game. PC Gamer’s August 2026 interview with OSRS creative director Kieren Charles describes a 70% minimum approval threshold for proposed additions. That is an account of the polling approach in that interview, not an independently audited summary of every current voting rule.

The model helps explain how OSRS can change without abandoning the expectations that make it “old school.” It pairs new quests, areas and endgame activities with a community approval process. Charles told PC Gamer, “The game’s bigger now than it was in 2007,” a comment about the game’s overall scale rather than a verified measure of its present population.
Is Old School RuneScape still popular?
There is evidence of strong engagement, but the available population figure needs careful attribution. PC Gamer reported in August 2026 that OSRS had set an all-time player-count record the previous August. In the same interview, Charles estimated that the game had upwards of one million active subscribers. That is a creative director’s estimate as reported by a secondary outlet, not an audited Jagex disclosure; it should not be treated as a precise live player count or a like-for-like comparison with other MMOs.

Jagex’s 2026 company materials also describe investment and expansion across the broader RuneScape franchise. That supports the view that the company is investing in its properties, but franchise-wide growth language is not an OSRS-specific guarantee. The evidence available here does not establish a comparable audited population trend or prove that OSRS will outperform its own past.

What’s coming to Old School RuneScape in 2026?
In its May 29, 2026 Summer Campfire recap, Jagex outlined a slate of OSRS content and product work. These were roadmap announcements and schedules, not proof that every item shipped on time.

The roadmap gives concrete reasons to expect OSRS to keep evolving: it includes quests and skilling as well as endgame content and technical improvements. It cannot establish that these plans were completed on schedule or that future updates will bring continued growth.

That is a reasonable outlook, but it is not a confirmed prediction from Jagex leadership. The strongest case for it is the combination of a reported player-count record, Charles’s estimate of more than a million active subscribers, and a substantial announced roadmap. Taken together, those suggest a game with an active audience and continued development.

The limits matter just as much. The subscriber figure is an estimate, not an audited count; the roadmap describes plans, not results; and broader Jagex statements about the franchise’s future should not be read as promises about OSRS alone. Jagex’s RuneFest 2026 preview discusses RuneScape plans for 2027 at the franchise level, so it is not an OSRS roadmap. The available facts support the possibility that OSRS has more successful years ahead, but they cannot prove that its best years are still to come.
