For occasional cup names, monograms, and simple designs cut from adhesive vinyl, Cricut Joy Xtra is the compact choice. Choose Cricut Explore 3 if you expect longer repeated cuts or want larger mats. Either can make a cup decal; the right choice depends on project size and whether you want to cut vinyl or print a full-color design.

What you need to make a cut-vinyl cup decal
For the straightforward workflow—cut a design from permanent adhesive vinyl, remove the excess, and apply the design—Cricut’s materials cheatsheet identifies permanent vinyl for drinkware such as cups, tumblers, glasses, and mugs: Cricut materials cheatsheet.

- Permanent adhesive vinyl compatible with your machine.
- A weeding tool to lift away vinyl that is not part of the design.
- Transfer tape, when appropriate for the vinyl and design.
- A scraper or other burnishing tool to press the design or transfer down.
- A clean cup surface suitable for the vinyl you choose.
Cricut’s Smart Vinyl instructions describe designing in Design Space, cutting the compatible material, weeding, and using transfer tape and a scraper as needed. Cricut says, “Transfer Tape works for most vinyl types.” StrongGrip is intended for textured finishes and may be too strong for ordinary vinyl. How to apply a simple vinyl design
- Create the design: Set up the name, monogram, or other cut design in Design Space at a size that fits the cup.
- Cut the vinyl: Load compatible vinyl using a mat or, if the machine and material support it, matlessly. Cricut says matless cutting with Smart Materials is supported on compatible Explore 3 and later or Maker 3 and later machines, subject to the minimum material length for matless loading. Check the current requirements in Cricut’s Smart Materials guidance.
- Weed the design: Remove the unwanted vinyl while leaving the letters or shapes you intend to apply.
- Transfer if needed: Use transfer tape when suitable for the vinyl and design, then burnish with a scraper so the decal adheres to the tape.
- Apply to the cup: Position the design, press it onto the chosen surface, and remove the transfer layer according to the vinyl instructions.
When you need a printer instead
A multicolor printed decal is a different process from cutting single-color adhesive vinyl. Cricut’s Printable Vinyl instructions specify an inkjet printer and a compatible Print Then Cut machine. Cricut Joy Xtra supports the listed Printable Vinyl colors; Cricut Joy does not support Print Then Cut. Confirm the machine and material compatibility before choosing this workflow: Cricut Printable Vinyl instructions.
You do not need an inkjet printer for an ordinary cut-vinyl name or monogram. The printer requirement applies to the printable, full-color approach.

Will a customized cup be dishwasher safe?
Do not assume so. Cricut’s beginner cheatsheet describes permanent vinyl as weather- and fade-resistant and dishwasher friendly, but that does not establish one care rule for every vinyl finish and cup. Check care directions for the exact vinyl and vessel. Only describe a cup as suitable for hand-washing or dishwasher use when the product-specific instructions support that claim.
