Six Tools a Developer Keeps Beside His Code Editor—and What Each Does

A developer’s six open-by-the-editor companions serve different jobs: capturing ideas, tracking tasks, consulting PDFs, running Git and shell commands on Windows, trying API requests, and checking interface designs. They’re examples of one person’s workflow, not a tested formula or a claim that every developer needs the same setup.

A page presenting an XDA Developers article by Yash quotes him: “I keep Obsidian open next to my code editor because I’m constantly thinking of things that I don’t want to lose.” The other tools on his list address what happens after an idea is captured: organizing work, finding references, and checking code or design details.

Why keep other tools open beside a code editor?

The point of this setup is to keep useful context within reach without asking one app to do every job. Yash’s list spans six separate needs. A note-taking app and a task tracker help manage work; a PDF reader provides reference material; Git Bash supports command-line work on Windows; Bruno is for API requests; and Figma provides a visual design reference.

Where can you capture ideas that don’t belong in code?

Obsidian for notes and possible solutions

Yash says he keeps Obsidian open to jot down ideas, thoughts, and possible solutions that he does not want to lose or place in code. In his workflow, it acts as a nearby space for personal notes. That use may suit a developer who wants to separate rough thinking from the project itself, but the article does not establish that Obsidian is the right note system for everyone.

How can you keep track of work that is due or blocked?

Asana for tasks and responsibilities

Yash uses Asana to see what is due, what is blocked or awaiting something, and what should happen next. He describes breaking larger pieces of work into smaller tasks and assigning due dates. The practical role here is task coordination: making responsibilities and next steps visible rather than keeping them only in memory.

How do you consult manuals and specifications while coding?

SumatraPDF for reference documents

Yash keeps SumatraPDF available for manuals, guides, specifications, and other PDF documents. He describes searching longer files and leaving a reference open while implementing code. That makes the reader’s task straightforward: use the PDF as a lookup source when relevant details are in documentation rather than in the code editor.

What is the Windows command-line option in this setup?

Git Bash for Git and shell commands

For Windows, Yash describes using Git Bash to check branches, commit changes, move through folders, run scripts, and handle smaller command-line tasks in a Unix-style environment. This part of the list is specifically framed around Windows; it is not a reason for developers on other operating systems to adopt the same shell.

Which of these tools belongs in your own setup?

Start with the task that currently pulls you away from coding most often. If ideas get lost, consider a note-taking space; if next steps or blockers are unclear, a task tracker may help. Developers consulting PDFs can keep a reader close by, while API work and interface implementation have their own request-testing and design-reference needs. Git Bash is relevant here only to the Windows workflow Yash describes.

These tools cover different needs, so this list is not a head-to-head comparison. The useful takeaway is the division of work: choose companions for the particular information or task you need nearby, rather than treating all six as a required productivity stack.
