What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a custom PC liquid-cooling loop, the practical default is a manufacturer-approved premixed coolant with corrosion, biological, and scale inhibitors. Check that the exact fluid is compatible with the loop’s blocks, metals, tubing, seals, and plastics. Distilled water is useful for flushing, but it is not a substitute for protected coolant in long-term use. A sealed all-in-one (AIO) cooler is different: do not open or refill it unless its manufacturer provides service instructions.
What makes a good PC coolant?
A suitable coolant must work with the loop’s materials and provide protection against corrosion and biological growth. Scale inhibitors may also be part of a manufacturer-recommended formulation. For Corsair Hydro X custom loops, Corsair recommends premixed fluid containing corrosion, biological, and scale inhibitors for protection and longevity (Corsair Hydro X custom-cooling FAQ, updated February 28, 2024).

That recommendation is specific to Hydro X guidance, not proof that one product is best for every loop. Check the coolant maker’s directions and the makers of the parts in your particular system. A compatibility list for one manufacturer’s hardware does not establish compatibility with another company’s components.

| Option | What it is suitable for | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer-approved premix | Long-term use in a custom loop when the exact product is approved for the loop’s components | Compatibility depends on the specific coolant and hardware; follow product directions. |
| Distilled water | Flushing a loop; it can also be used as coolant when properly supplemented | Corsair says long-term use requires corrosion, biological, and scale inhibitors. Distilled water alone does not provide that protection. |
| Tap water | Not recommended for a custom loop | Corsair warns that minerals and particulates can damage or clog the loop (Corsair Hydro X custom-cooling FAQ). |
How to check coolant compatibility
- Identify the materials in the loop. Check the water blocks, radiator, fittings, tubing, seals, and any other wetted parts. Different metals in a water-based loop can contribute to galvanic corrosion; Koolance describes this as a reaction between different metals in an electrolyte such as water (Koolance, Cooling 101: Cooling System Design).
- Look up the exact coolant in the component maker’s guidance. Corsair’s Hydro X compatibility list identifies specific products as preferred, compatible, or not compatible. It says products not listed should be considered incompatible for Hydro X; that rule applies to Hydro X, not to every loop on the market (Corsair Hydro X coolant compatibility, updated February 17, 2026).
- Check material combinations, not just the fluid name. Corsair warns against using aluminum parts with its nickel-plated copper blocks. Follow the hardware maker’s rules for the exact parts you have rather than assuming that a coolant’s general label makes every combination safe (Corsair Hydro X custom-cooling FAQ).
- Follow preparation instructions. A premix is ready to use as directed; a concentrate must be prepared according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Do not treat plain distilled water as if it already contains the additives needed for long-term protection.
Should you use clear, dyed, or opaque coolant?
Choose based on the product’s compatibility and the upkeep you are willing to do, rather than assuming an appearance type performs better. Corsair’s Hydro X filling guide advises replacing coolant about every 12 months, or every six months as a conservative interval, and says opaque or dyed coolant may need more frequent changes. Those are manufacturer recommendations for Hydro X, not a universal replacement schedule (Corsair Hydro X filling guide).
#1 Best Overall
- Choose from a stunning range of vibrant colors to complete your custom cooling system and enhance your build
- Long lasting pre-mixed performance coolant is ready to go right out of the bottle, with no additional additives or inhibitors required
- Protects copper, brass, and nickel with advanced corrosion
- Protects copper, brass, and nickel with advanced anti-corrosion and anti-bacterial inhibitors
If you want simpler upkeep, a compatible clear premix is a reasonable choice. Inspect the fluid and follow its product-specific instructions; a change in appearance can be a reason to service it sooner.
How often should PC coolant be replaced?
There is no single interval established for every coolant and loop. The recommendations differ by product: Corsair gives the Hydro X guidance above, while Koolance recommends changing its LIQ-702 coolant every two to three years, or sooner if the liquid changes color or clarity (Koolance LIQ-702 product page). Treat these as manufacturer-specific service advice, not tested lifespan guarantees. Follow the directions for your coolant and components, and check the liquid’s condition.

Can glycol, alcohol, or oil cool a PC better?
Koolance’s guidance says water-based solutions transfer heat more effectively than alcohol, glycol, or oil, and cautions that alcohol and many oils can react with some plastics or rubber seals (Koolance computer-cooling FAQ). This is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled comparison of every available formulation. The manufacturer material cited here does not establish a winning coolant brand or product through comparable PC temperature tests, so a claim that one premix runs a system cooler than its competitors is not supported.

A sealed AIO is not an open custom loop that you should top up with distilled water or premix. Corsair says its AIOs use a proprietary blend of water, glycol, and additives (Corsair AIO coolant FAQ). That information applies to Corsair AIOs; for another model, follow its maker’s service instructions. Do not add coolant unless those instructions explicitly describe how.
