For most Mac owners, the best cloud storage is the service that fits the tools and devices they already use: choose iCloud Drive for Apple integration, Google Drive for Google collaboration, OneDrive for Microsoft 365, or Dropbox for cross-platform syncing and sharing. These are workflow-based recommendations, not results of hands-on testing. Cloud sync also does not replace a full Mac backup.
Which cloud storage should you choose for a Mac?
Start with your everyday workflow rather than the lowest advertised price per gigabyte. Storage may be shared with other account data, and services differ in how they fit your apps, devices, and collaboration habits.

This comparison reflects use-case guidance, not a ranking from independent Mac performance tests. Google Drive and OneDrive experiences on Mac can differ from their Windows versions; check the current service details and compatibility for your macOS version before committing. iCloud Drive is the most direct choice if you want your Mac files integrated with Apple’s ecosystem. You can enable it in System Settings and turn on “Sync this Mac.” If you choose to sync Desktop and Documents, those folders appear in iCloud Drive and are accessible through Finder and the Files app on iPhone and iPad.

With Optimize Mac Storage enabled, macOS can move older documents into iCloud when local space is needed. This helps manage disk space, but it does not mean every file is always stored locally. Apple warns that another service syncing the same Desktop and Documents folders can interfere with or stop iCloud’s updates. Avoid having two services manage those folders at once. Apple’s Mac guide explains iCloud Drive setup and storage behavior.
What iCloud storage actually has to hold
Your iCloud storage is shared across iCloud Drive and other data, including iCloud Photos, iPhone and iPad backups, messages, and Mail attachments. The space available for Mac documents can therefore be less than the plan’s headline capacity suggests.

What to consider with Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox
Google Drive for Google collaboration
Google Drive is a sensible fit if your work and shared files revolve around Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Choose it for that ecosystem rather than assuming it will behave exactly like Apple’s built-in file syncing.

OneDrive for Microsoft 365 work
OneDrive suits people whose documents and collaboration center on Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft 365. If those tools already define your workflow, keeping files with that ecosystem may be more useful than selecting a service solely for its Mac interface.
Dropbox for cross-platform syncing and sharing
Dropbox documents online-only files that remain visible on the desktop while stored in the cloud, downloading when needed. Its feature page also describes selective sync on Mac, offline access, and recovery of earlier versions of synced files. These are provider-described features, not independently tested results. See Dropbox’s sync feature information for details.

How can you save Mac disk space without losing access to files?
Online-only storage and selective sync can reduce the files kept on your Mac, but they work differently from a local copy. With online-only files, the item is visible in the desktop interface but downloads when needed; offline access requires files to be available locally. Dropbox documents both online-only storage and selective sync for Mac. iCloud’s Optimize Mac Storage can also move older documents into iCloud when space is needed.
Before relying on any space-saving mode, consider whether you need files without an internet connection. Keep important working files available offline when you travel or expect unreliable connectivity, and verify how your chosen service marks local versus cloud-only items.

Does cloud storage back up a Mac?
No. Sync keeps selected files aligned across locations; a deletion or unwanted change can sync too. A backup should give you a way to restore files or the Mac after loss. Apple states, “iCloud doesn’t back up your entire Mac.” Apple’s backup guidance distinguishes iCloud from Time Machine, which can back up a Mac and restore specific files or the system.
For a separate local backup, Apple supports using an external USB or Thunderbolt drive with Time Machine. Apple recommends a backup disk with at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity—for example, a 2 TB disk for a Mac with 1 TB of storage—and advises using that disk only for backups. Check port compatibility and capacity when choosing a drive. Apple’s Time Machine support page gives setup and disk guidance.
Quick Recap
A simple way to decide
- Choose iCloud Drive if Apple-device integration and Finder access are your priorities, and check how Photos and device backups use the same storage.
- Choose Google Drive if Google apps and collaboration are central to your work.
- Choose OneDrive if Microsoft 365 is where you create and share most documents.
- Choose Dropbox if cross-platform sync, sharing, and online-only file options matter most.
- Whichever you choose, maintain a separate backup if you need a way to restore your Mac or recover from file loss.
