Which Chromebook Settings Can Improve Android App Performance?

Update ChromeOS and Android apps, restart, and free storage before changing advanced settings. Hyper-Threading is optional and carries a security caveat.

Start with ChromeOS and app updates, a restart, and enough free storage. These are the practical first checks for slow, crashing, or troublesome Android apps on a Chromebook. Google also documents an optional Hyper-Threading setting for supported CPUs, but warns that it may carry a security risk; it is not a guaranteed speed boost.

First confirm your Chromebook can run Android apps

The Google Play Store is available only on some Chromebook models. Check Settings > Apps for Google Play Store. If the Chromebook is managed by a school or workplace, its administrator may restrict Play Store access. Google also notes that some Android apps are incompatible with some Chromebook models. See Google’s Android app compatibility and setup guidance.

Try the low-risk fixes first

Update ChromeOS and restart

Open Settings > About ChromeOS and check for updates. Install any available update, then restart: ChromeOS completes an update after the restart. Google recommends restarting, checking the internet connection, and updating ChromeOS when the Play Store will not load, crashes, or will not open. Follow Google’s ChromeOS update instructions and Play Store troubleshooting steps.

Update Android apps

Open the Play Store and install available updates for your Android apps. An app update can address problems in that app, though it does not guarantee improved performance on every Chromebook. Google’s app update and settings instructions explain where to manage updates.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Free up storage

Google says low disk space can cause problems using Android apps. Go to Settings > System preferences > Storage management and review what is taking space. You can remove files you no longer need, clear browsing data or download history, uninstall unused apps, and delete unused local user accounts. See Google’s storage cleanup guidance.

Consider Hyper-Threading only if its tradeoff is acceptable

Google documents Hyper-Threading as a performance setting that may help apps and games on relevant CPUs. It is not available on every Chromebook, and Google does not promise a particular improvement for any device. The support page requires ChromeOS 74 or later.

Google’s warning is explicit: “Important: Hyper-Threading is turned off by default to protect you since it may be a security risk.” Treat this as an optional tradeoff, not a routine setting to change just because an app feels slow.

  1. In Chrome, open chrome://flags#scheduler-configuration.
  2. If the option is available, choose Enables Hyper-Threading on relevant CPUs.
  3. Restart the Chromebook when prompted.

To undo the change, return to the same flag, set it to Default, and restart. Details are in Google’s Hyper-Threading instructions.

Separate app layout from app speed

For supported newly downloaded Android apps, Chromebook settings can show the app in phone, tablet, or custom size. This changes how the app appears on screen; Google does not describe window sizing as a way to increase processing speed. If only one app is slow or unstable after updates and a restart, consider whether that app is compatible with your Chromebook rather than expecting a display setting to fix it. Google explains app sizing and compatibility in its Android app guidance.

Check before opting into extended updates

On eligible older Chromebooks, opting into extended updates removes Android apps and the Play Store, and Google says the process cannot be reversed. If you rely on Android apps, review Google’s extended updates information before opting in.
