For a compact controller with pads and Ableton Live integration, consider the Novation Launchkey Mini [MK3]; for full-size keys in a small footprint, look at the Alesis V25 MKII. The Arturia MiniLab 3 offers a broader set of hands-on controls, while M-Audio’s Keystation Mini 32 MK3 gives you 32 mini keys for note entry. These are four manufacturer-documented candidates, not a tested top-five ranking: the available evidence does not establish a fifth pick, current cross-retailer prices, or comparative key feel.
How to choose a budget MIDI keyboard
A MIDI keyboard controller sends performance and control information to music software or compatible hardware; it does not, by itself, determine the sound you hear. Before buying, check that the controller’s connection and MIDI output work with the DAW or hardware you plan to use. USB is common among these models, while some also offer conventional MIDI output.

- Choose key count and size for how you play. Mini keys keep a controller compact. Full-size keys may be more comfortable if you already play a conventional keyboard. More keys extend the playable range, but specifications alone cannot tell you which keybed will feel best.
- Pay for controls you will use. Pads can help with beat making; knobs and sliders can give hands-on control of software instruments and mixes. Wheels, sustain connections, and DAW-specific integration matter more to some setups than others.
- Treat bundled software as a bonus, not a guarantee. Offers can change, so confirm what the exact model and seller currently include.
- Check current local pricing. “Cheap” depends on country, seller, stock, and product generation. The manufacturer-listed figures below are not a normalized street-price comparison.
Four budget MIDI keyboard candidates
| Model | Keys and controls | Connections and integration | Software and price context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novation Launchkey Mini [MK3] | 25 mini keys; 16 velocity-sensitive RGB pads; eight knobs; pitch and modulation touch strips. | USB and 3.5 mm TRS Type A MIDI Out; Novation describes integration with Ableton Live. | Manufacturer lists Ableton Live Lite and other software in the bundle. Its MK3 page lists $109.99 and reports the model sold out there; the current range page lists the newer Launchkey Mini 25 at $139.99. Those figures concern different generations and are not interchangeable. |
| Arturia MiniLab 3 | 25 velocity-sensitive slim keys; eight rotary encoders, four sliders, eight pads in two banks, display, and browser knob. | USB-C and MIDI Out. | Arturia lists Analog Lab Intro and other software in the package. Its overview page listed $149 when captured; check the live page for current pricing and bundle details. |
| Alesis V25 MKII | 25 full-size velocity-sensitive synth-action keys; eight velocity-sensitive pads; four assignable knobs; pitch-bend and modulation wheels; arpeggiator and octave/transpose buttons. | USB-powered for Mac or PC; sustain-pedal input. | Alesis describes included production and education software offers. The manufacturer page does not establish a current price. |
| M-Audio Keystation Mini 32 MK3 | 32 velocity-sensitive mini keys with selectable velocity curves; pitch-bend and modulation buttons; octave controls; volume knob and sustain button. | USB power and data. | M-Audio lists bundled software. Its 2018 launch announcement quoted a US retail launch price of $49; that is historical, not a current price. |
Specifications and bundle descriptions in this table come from the manufacturers, not comparative performance tests. For product details, see the Novation controller range, Arturia MiniLab 3 store page, and M-Audio’s 2018 launch announcement.

For a compact controller with pads and Ableton Live integration: Launchkey Mini [MK3]
The MK3 combines 25 mini keys with 16 RGB pads, eight knobs, touch strips, and a TRS MIDI Out. Novation calls it “Our most compact and portable 25-mini-key MIDI keyboard controller.” That makes it a feature-rich compact option to consider if those controls and its Ableton integration match your workflow. Check the exact generation and current availability: the manufacturer’s MK3 page reports it sold out there, while its newer Mini 25 is a separate model.

For more hands-on controls: Arturia MiniLab 3
The MiniLab 3 pairs 25 slim keys with encoders, sliders, two banks of pads, a display, and a browser knob. It is a candidate for someone who values a varied control surface and included software. Its listed $149 price is page-specific and may change; verify both price and package before ordering.
For full-size keys in a compact controller: Alesis V25 MKII
The V25 MKII is the only one of these four with full-size keys. It also includes pads, assignable knobs, pitch and modulation wheels, an arpeggiator, and a sustain-pedal input. Consider it if key size and those playing controls matter more than having the smallest possible mini-key controller. A current price is not established on the manufacturer page.

The pitch-bend and modulation buttons, octave controls, volume knob, and sustain button cover basic performance tasks. The $49 figure in M-Audio’s 2018 announcement is a launch price, not a reliable guide to what it costs now.

What “cheap” means for these models
There is no reliable five-model price ranking here. Manufacturer pages show prices for some models but not others, and the available Novation figures refer to different generations and availability states. Prices, stock, and software bundles can vary by seller and change over time. Check your country’s current listings for the exact model and generation, compare what is included, and do not assume a historical launch price or an older product-page price is the price you will pay today.

Is a mini-key controller right for you?
Mini keys are a practical way to reduce a controller’s footprint, especially for travel or entering notes at a desk. The trade-off is key size, not a guaranteed difference in sound or MIDI function. If you prefer the spacing of conventional keys, the V25 MKII’s full-size keys are the clearest fit among these candidates. If portability or extra controls matters more, compare the mini-key models by their pads, knobs, output connections, and DAW workflow instead.
None of the listed manufacturer specifications establishes key feel, durability, latency, reliability, or customer satisfaction relative to the others. Choose by the documented features that suit your setup, then confirm compatibility and live availability before buying.
