There is no single best carrier for every address or route in Hawaii. In CoverageMap’s statewide comparison, Verizon had the highest FCC-based area-coverage figure, while T-Mobile led the crowdsourced download-speed and reliability measures. Those results answer different questions; check the places you actually use before choosing a network.

How the Hawaii carrier results compare

CoverageMap’s Hawaii comparison, accessed October 7, 2026, combines an FCC-data-based coverage estimate with crowdsourced speed tests and a source-defined reliability score. Its statewide results are:

Coverage, speed, and reliability are different measures

Verizon’s 80.1% figure is the highest area-coverage estimate in this comparison; it does not mean Verizon works in 80.1% of buildings or that it is available at a particular address. T-Mobile’s 124.4 Mbps download result and 7.7/10 reliability score lead the listed speed and reliability measures, but they do not establish that T-Mobile has the broadest coverage.

CoverageMap says its speed and reliability figures come from crowdsourced measurements and its coverage figure is based on FCC data. Its reliability score is a composite using lower-end speed-test percentiles and, when local testing is limited, a signal-quality fallback. The site reports more than 83,000 Hawaii speed tests overall; that is a count of tests, not necessarily distinct people or locations. The carrier-specific sample counts also differ, so these results are useful context rather than a controlled, like-for-like test of every place in the state.

Why statewide maps cannot pick a carrier for your address

The FCC mobile map shows reported 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage where consumers should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle. It does not show indoor coverage. Its view can be filtered by data-as-of date, technology, 5G speed threshold, and outdoor stationary or in-vehicle coverage. The FCC’s mobile map guidance explains those options and how to submit an availability challenge if reported coverage appears wrong; the challenge process uses outdoor or in-vehicle app tests.

The Broadband Map’s Hawaii data primarily use the FCC’s May 2026 Broadband Data Collection release, representing networks as of December 2025, supplemented by crowdsourced measurements. Its coverage layer represents predicted outdoor native coverage—not indoor signal, congestion, or roaming. A map can therefore help narrow choices, but it cannot promise service inside a home, hotel, or other building.

Carrier maps have similar limits. AT&T says its map displays approximate outdoor coverage and that actual service may vary, is not guaranteed, and can change without notice. Verizon also labels its map approximate outdoor coverage and not a guarantee; it distinguishes 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G, and 4G LTE. Check the carrier’s own map for the location and technology you care about, but treat its result as an estimate rather than a service guarantee.

How to check coverage where you actually use your phone

  1. List the locations and routes that matter. Include home, work, regular roads, and places where you stay. For each, decide whether indoor service, outdoor service, or connectivity while traveling is the priority.
  2. Compare carriers in the FCC map using the same settings. Use the same data-as-of date, technology, 5G speed threshold, and outdoor stationary or in-vehicle layer for each carrier. Changing filters can change what the map shows, so mismatched views are not a fair comparison.
  3. Check each carrier’s own map at those locations. Review the relevant technology layer and remember that carrier coverage maps are approximate, particularly for indoor use.
  4. Use crowdsourced figures as supporting evidence. Look at download and upload speeds and the reliability measure, but keep the test counts and coverage gaps in mind: samples do not represent every address, customer, or time of day.
  5. Compare plan terms only after choosing a viable network. Check current price, data limits, hotspot allowance, roaming, and network priority for the particular plan. A less expensive plan is not useful if its underlying network does not work where you need it.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The available statewide comparison supports a split answer: Verizon leads its area-coverage estimate, while T-Mobile leads the listed crowdsourced speed and reliability metrics. It does not establish a winner for every Hawaiian island, town, resort, rural road, building, or emergency situation. Nor does a statewide percentage tell you whether a carrier will work in your home or on your daily route.

An Opensignal search-result excerpt from January 2026 showed Verizon at 9.7/10 and AT&T at 9.3/10 on its Hawaii Coverage Experience measure, but the underlying page was inaccessible. That result is limited context, not a basis for replacing the more fully described statewide comparison or declaring a universal winner.
