Play Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse first. It is the one earlier game with a direct story connection to Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse: Konami places the new adventure in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III, and follows Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont. Sypha Belnades, Trevor’s partner in the earlier story, is identified as Rose’s mother. You do not need to finish Castlevania III to follow Belmont’s Curse, but it provides the clearest context for Rose’s family and the previous conflict with Dracula.
The one game to prioritize: Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse
Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse is the best preparation for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse because the two games are connected through both time and family. The new game is set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after the events of Castlevania III. Its protagonist, Rose Belmont, is Trevor Belmont’s daughter, while Sypha Belnades is named as her mother.

That makes Castlevania III more relevant than simply choosing the most famous or oldest game in the series. It introduces Trevor as the Belmont at the center of the earlier Dracula conflict and establishes the generation immediately preceding Rose. If you want one complete game before the new release, this is the one.

Castlevania III is Trevor-led, so it gives you the most direct perspective on the Belmont family line that Belmont’s Curse continues. Playing it lets you meet the earlier generation rather than encountering Rose’s heritage only through exposition in the new game.
#1 Best Overall
- Classics that defined the Castlevania series.
- Includes the "History of Castlevania - Book of the Crescent Moon" ebook.
- This includes eight classic Castlevania games preserved on one disc with a full-color manual.
- The Castlevania Anniversary Collection on physical disc for the PlayStation 4. Also works on PlayStation 5. Region-free.
It also gives the earlier Dracula confrontation a concrete place in the timeline. The 23-year interval matters: Belmont’s Curse is not presented as a remake of the same period or as a side story set immediately afterward. It is a later chapter in which Rose inherits a family history already shaped by Trevor’s actions.
How Sypha fits the connection
Konami’s official character information identifies Sypha Belnades as Rose’s mother. That makes Sypha relevant even if your main reason for playing is Rose. Castlevania III is therefore useful for understanding both sides of Rose’s parentage, not only the Belmont surname.
Do you need to play Castlevania III first?
No. The official material establishes a direct connection, but it does not say that players must complete Castlevania III before starting Belmont’s Curse. Treat the older game as high-value background, not mandatory homework.

If you are primarily interested in Rose’s 1499 adventure, you can begin with Belmont’s Curse and use the family details as an invitation to explore the older title afterward. If you enjoy seeing a fictional lineage develop in chronological order, play Castlevania III before the new game. Both approaches are reasonable because no comprehensive required play order has been announced.
Choose based on the experience you want
- Maximum direct story context: play Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse before Belmont’s Curse.
- Minimal preparation: start Belmont’s Curse without preplaying anything.
- Broader historical context: use the Castlevania Anniversary Collection to sample several early entries, with Castlevania III as your anchor.
Where the Castlevania Anniversary Collection fits
The Castlevania Anniversary Collection is the convenient broad option, not a second direct prerequisite. Konami described the collection as a first step into the series and included Castlevania III alongside other early games. Its launch announcement in 2019 described it as a digital exclusive.
Choose the collection when you want to understand how the series changed across its early years, or when you prefer one package instead of locating individual retro releases. It lets you reach the directly relevant game while also sampling other entries for historical context. The collection is a survey tool; it does not create a newly established mandatory order for Belmont’s Curse.

- Battle through the corridors of Dracula’s Castle; Wield weapons against monsters to reach the throne room of the Dark Lord
Why the collection is optional breadth
The available official descriptions do not identify every game in the collection as necessary for Rose’s story. The direct relationship remains Trevor, Sypha and Rose, which is why Castlevania III should be your first stop even if you own the full compilation.
What about Simon’s Quest?
Konami’s support material describes Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest as an exploration and puzzle-solving action RPG. That makes it useful if you want to see a different early-series structure, but it is not presented as a direct narrative requirement for Belmont’s Curse. Play it for historical range, not because Rose’s immediate family connection depends on it.
Comparison: which preparation matches your goal?
| Option | Direct relevance to Rose, Trevor and Sypha | What it adds | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse | Highest | Trevor’s story and the preceding Dracula conflict; the generation directly before Rose | Readers who want one focused prequel |
| Castlevania Anniversary Collection | Includes the direct pick, plus broader early-series context | A convenient digital survey of multiple early entries | Readers who want franchise history in one package |
| Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest | Not established as a direct Rose prerequisite | Exploration and puzzle-solving action-RPG design | Readers curious about early mechanical variety |
| No earlier game | None required by the announced material | Lets you approach Rose’s story without retro preparation | Readers focused on the new release |
Three sensible play paths
Path 1: The shortest meaningful route
- Play Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.
- Start Belmont’s Curse when it releases.
This path gives you the relevant Trevor-and-Sypha context without turning the entire back catalog into an assignment.
Rank #4
- 17 Levels - Each one with its own atmosphere, foes and secrets to discover
- 5 Bosses - Made by the most sadistic of the devs, raised on the salt of the testers
- 150 or so weapons and skills - Spears, swords, bows, magic spells, shields, pets, frying pans etc; You name it, we got it
- Unlock the four original Dead Cells DLCs, giving you late-game content plus an entire new pathway to follow, with an alternative ending and tons of new enemies, weapons & outfits
- Battle through the corridors of Dracula’s Castle; Wield weapons against monsters to reach the throne room of the Dark Lord
Path 2: The broad early-series tour
- Play Castlevania III first so the direct family connection is fresh.
- Use the Castlevania Anniversary Collection to explore other included early games.
- Try Simon’s Quest if you specifically want its exploration and puzzle-solving format.
- Move to Belmont’s Curse with the broader series background in place.
This route is for players who value design history as much as immediate plot relevance. There is no evidence that every included game must be completed in order.
Path 3: Play the new game first
- Begin Belmont’s Curse without preparation.
- Note the references to Rose, Trevor and Sypha as you encounter them.
- Play Castlevania III afterward to investigate the earlier generation.
This is a good choice if you want the new game to establish Rose in your mind before you revisit her parents’ story. It also avoids assuming that a decades-old game should be a barrier to entry.
How the timeline connects the games
The announced chronology is straightforward:
- Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse: Trevor Belmont is the central Belmont in the earlier story.
- Twenty-three years later: the new game takes place in Paris in 1499.
- Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse: Rose Belmont, Trevor’s daughter and Sypha’s daughter, leads the new story.
The dates establish a generational handoff rather than a requirement to replay every prior Dracula encounter. They also give you a reason to play Castlevania III even if you are more interested in Rose than Trevor: it is the immediately preceding family chapter identified by Konami.

How to approach the older game without overcommitting
Castlevania III is an NES-era title, so its presentation and structure reflect its original hardware generation. You can approach it as a historical prequel rather than expecting it to function like a modern release. The goal for this preparation is to understand Trevor’s place in the family and the earlier conflict, not to treat the older game as a test you must pass.
If you already own original hardware, the original NES cartridge is the direct physical version. Availability, seller authenticity and cartridge condition vary, and no particular listing should be assumed to be in stock. The Castlevania Anniversary Collection offers a digital route that includes Castlevania III; its 2019 launch description called the collection a digital exclusive, so do not assume a verified physical edition from that announcement.
Belmont’s Curse release context
Konami announced October 15, 2026 as the release date for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. As of October 13, 2026, it was still an upcoming release. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch.

If you have only a limited amount of time before October 15, skip the attempt to complete a franchise-wide marathon and concentrate on Trevor’s chapter.
What not to assume about the play order
- Do not assume that Castlevania III is officially required; Konami has established the connection, not a completion prerequisite.
- Do not assume that every game in the Anniversary Collection contributes equally to Rose’s immediate story.
- Do not assume that a chronological franchise marathon is the only correct way to enter Belmont’s Curse.
- Do not treat the 23-year gap as evidence that every event between the two games has been explained; the announced facts establish the setting and family relationship, not a complete intervening history.
Bottom line for different readers
If you want one answer to “Which Castlevania games should I play before Belmont’s Curse?”, choose Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. It is the Trevor-led story that most directly precedes Rose’s adventure and gives Sypha’s role in the family context. The Castlevania Anniversary Collection is worthwhile for a wider look at early Castlevania, while Simon’s Quest is an optional change of pace rather than required preparation. And if you would rather meet Rose first, you can start Belmont’s Curse without playing anything beforehand.
