Which Cars Have 5-Cylinder Engines? A Guide to Notable Models

Five-cylinder engines powered everything from Mercedes-Benz diesels and Audi quattro cars to Volvo performance models, Volkswagen family cars, GM pickups and Land Rover SUVs. Here are the notable examples and the checks needed to identify the engine in a specific vehicle.

What cars have a five-cylinder engine? Notable examples include Mercedes-Benz 240D, Audi 100 and RS 3, Volvo 850 and S60 R, selected Ford Focus ST/RS models, Volkswagen Jetta and VR5-powered cars, Acura Vigor, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Hummer H3, Fiat and Lancia models, and Land Rover Discovery and Defender variants. They use different gasoline or diesel engines, layouts, turbo systems and vehicle platforms, so a model name alone does not prove which engine is fitted.

The earliest notable series-production passenger-car example in the sources is Mercedes-Benz’s 1974 240D 3.0 with the OM617 diesel. Audi’s separate five-cylinder history began with the second-generation Audi 100 in 1976. Use the model year, trim, country, body style and engine code whenever you need to identify a specific car.

What a five-cylinder engine is

A five-cylinder engine has five pistons and combustion chambers. Most automotive examples are inline-fives, with all cylinders arranged in one bank, but Volkswagen also built a narrow-angle VR5 in which the cylinders share a compact staggered arrangement. Five-cylinder engines have appeared as naturally aspirated or turbocharged gasoline units and as naturally aspirated or turbocharged diesels.

The cylinder count does not identify a common engine family. Mercedes-Benz OM617, Audi’s early inline-fives and modern 2.5 TFSI, Volvo modular engines, Volkswagen’s 2.5-liter and VR5, and General Motors’ 3.5-liter engine are unrelated designs. They differ in displacement, fuel system, emissions equipment, transmission pairing, power output and vehicle layout.

Why the sound is distinctive

Audi describes the firing order of its five-cylinder engines as 1-2-4-5-3. With a four-stroke cycle, firing events are separated by 144 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Audi’s explanation notes that adjacent and more distant cylinder pairs alternate, creating the characteristic uneven pulse pattern. That sound belongs to a particular engine’s design, cam timing, turbocharger and exhaust system; not every five-cylinder car sounds identical.

Audi museum curator Stefan Felber described the company’s connection to the layout in a July 31, 2026 exhibition release: “50 years of the five-cylinder engine is a very special anniversary for Audi: few technologies evoke such strong emotions or have shaped the brand’s image so profoundly over the past five decades. That’s why so many Audi fans and museum visitors have asked us whether we’d mark this anniversary with a special exhibition — a wish we were only too happy to fulfill.” The exhibition contained seven engine displays and fourteen vehicle exhibits, counts that describe the exhibition rather than the total number of five-cylinder cars.

Mercedes-Benz OM617 and later five-cylinder diesels

The Mercedes-Benz 240D 3.0 introduced the OM617 five-cylinder diesel in 1974. A historical account from Classic & Sports Car identifies it as the first five-cylinder passenger-car engine in series production. Later OM617 applications included the 300D, 300CD, 300SD and selected G-Class models; turbocharged and naturally aspirated versions, displacements and markets varied.

Mercedes-Benz subsequently used other five-cylinder diesel families. The 190D 2.5 used an OM602, while selected E-Class, M-Class, G-Class and Sprinter vehicles used engines from the OM602/OM612 lineage. Some markets also received a five-cylinder diesel in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Engine code and market are essential because a badge such as “300D” does not specify one universal configuration.

Audi’s long-running gasoline and diesel inline-fives

Audi’s five-cylinder story began with the second-generation Audi 100. Audi’s official history says the 2,144 cc engine delivered 100 kW (136 PS), with 100 5E deliveries beginning in March 1977. The same lineage expanded through the 200 5T, quattro, Sport quattro, 100 TDI, S2, RS2 Avant, S6, TT RS, RS Q3 and RS 3. These are generations of related engineering ideas, not one unchanged engine.

Audi’s dated milestones are:

Year Model or development Published specification or context
1976 Second-generation Audi 100 five-cylinder debut 2,144 cc; 100 kW (136 PS); 100 5E deliveries began in March 1977
1978 Naturally aspirated two-liter diesel 51 kW (70 PS)
1979 Audi 200 5T turbocharged gasoline engine 125 kW (170 PS) and 265 Nm
1980 quattro Turbocharged five-cylinder rated at 147 kW (200 PS)
1983 Sport quattro Four-valve light-alloy five-cylinder rated at 225 kW (306 PS)
1989 100 TDI 2.5-liter direct-injection turbo-diesel rated at 88 kW (120 PS)
1994 RS2 Avant Five-cylinder rated at 232 kW (315 PS)

These figures come from Audi’s official timeline, including its December 3, 2025 history and RS 3 release and the earlier Audi five-cylinder overview. Outputs can differ in another market or model year.

Audi’s December 2025 release described the RS 3’s 2.5 TFSI as continuing the five-cylinder tradition and gave 294 kW (400 PS) and 500 Nm for the version discussed. Treat those numbers as specifications for that release, not as a universal RS 3 rating. The release does not establish availability in every country, so check the local Audi model information for a particular purchase.

Volvo 850, R models and modular five-cylinders

Volvo introduced the 850 with a transverse five-cylinder in 1991, according to Road & Track’s 2023 history. Five-cylinder gasoline, diesel and bi-fuel engines then appeared in various 850, S70, V70, C70, S40, V40, S60, V60, XC60, XC70 and XC90 applications. The exact engine, turbocharger, fuel and drivetrain depended on year and market.

Performance versions include the 850 T-5R and the S60 R and V70 R. Car and Driver identifies the S60 R and V70 R among high-output 2.5-liter examples, while its broad survey also lists additional Volvo applications. A Volvo badge or body style alone is insufficient to determine whether a car has five cylinders.

Ford Focus ST and RS models using Volvo-derived engines

Selected European Ford Focus ST, RS and RS500 models used a Volvo-derived 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder. The limited RS500 variant was listed by Car and Driver at 345 horsepower. These cars were not sold with the same engine in every Ford market, and the Focus name covers multiple generations and powertrains. Verify the original market, model year and engine code before importing, modifying or ordering parts.

Volkswagen’s inline-five and VR5

Volkswagen’s U.S.-market 2.5-liter inline-five appeared in Jetta, Golf and New Beetle applications from 2005, with the Passat receiving the engine in 2012. Production ended as those models changed to other engines. Trim, transmission and emissions equipment varied.

Volkswagen also built the 2.3-liter VR5, a narrow-angle design distinct from a conventional inline-five. Car and Driver dates VR5 production from 1997 to 2005 and lists selected overseas Golf, Bora/Jetta, Passat, New Beetle and SEAT Toledo applications. Because the VR5 was primarily a non-U.S. offering, registration documents and the original market matter when identifying one.

Acura and Honda five-cylinder sedans

Acura sold a 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the North American Vigor and later 2.5 TL. Related Honda sedans in Japan used corresponding G-series engines. The engine’s longitudinal installation and front-wheel-drive layout made these cars unusual among contemporary midsize sedans, but displacement and equipment changed with trim and market.

General Motors pickups and Hummer H3

General Motors’ 3.5-liter gasoline inline-five appeared in selected Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups beginning in 2004. The Hummer H3 also used GM’s five-cylinder. These are historical applications rather than current new-vehicle engines, and not every Colorado, Canyon or H3 has five cylinders.

Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo applications

Fiat used five-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines in selected Coupe, Bravo/Brava and Marea models. Lancia applications included the Kappa and Thesis, while Alfa Romeo used five-cylinder engines in selected 156, 159, 166, Spider and Brera versions. The diesel cars used several 2.4-liter JTD families; gasoline displacement, turbocharging and output varied. European market and production year are particularly important for parts compatibility.

Land Rover Td5, Ford commercial vehicles and Mazda BT-50

The Land Rover Td5 is a 2.5-liter diesel five-cylinder found in selected Discovery Series II and Defender vehicles. The cited survey gives Defender use through 2007, but not every Defender had a Td5; confirm the engine code and build market.

Ford Duratorq five-cylinder diesels powered selected non-U.S. Ranger, Mazda BT-50 and Transit applications. Ratings and emissions equipment varied across regions and generations. A Ranger or Transit name therefore cannot establish five-cylinder fitment without a VIN or engine-code check.

How to identify the engine in a specific car

Use this process when buying a used car, checking a restoration or ordering parts:

  1. Record the complete identity. Write down model, body style, model year, trim, transmission and country of first sale. A U.S. Jetta, European Jetta and similarly named model may have different engines.
  2. Find the engine code. Look at the vehicle data plate, service book, emissions label, diagnostic scan or manufacturer parts catalog. Do not rely on a five-cylinder badge alone.
  3. Cross-check the VIN. Ask a manufacturer dealer or a reputable parts catalog to decode the VIN and confirm the original powertrain.
  4. Check physical layout only as a secondary clue. An inline-five normally has one cylinder bank, while a VR5 is a narrow-angle design. Covers, swaps and aftermarket parts can make visual identification misleading.
  5. Match emissions and equipment. Turbochargers, injectors, exhaust after-treatment, sensors and transmissions can differ within the same displacement. Parts must match the exact engine code and emissions version.
  6. Confirm local documentation. For an imported or gray-market vehicle, compare the original-market brochure, registration record and build sheet rather than assuming the specification used in another country.

Five-cylinder cars by use case

Historic diesel cruising

The Mercedes-Benz 240D 3.0 and later OM617 cars represent the early passenger-car diesel use of five cylinders. Their significance is historical; this guide does not establish reliability, fuel economy, maintenance cost or the condition of any individual example.

Rally-derived and performance driving

Audi’s quattro, Sport quattro and RS2 made the layout famous in performance cars. Volvo’s 850 T-5R, S60 R and V70 R, Ford’s selected Focus ST/RS models and modern Audi RS cars show different approaches to turbocharged five-cylinder performance. Power figures from one generation cannot be transferred to another.

Family cars, pickups and vans

Volkswagen, Acura, General Motors, Ford, Land Rover and Fiat-group vehicles demonstrate that five-cylinder engines were also used for ordinary sedans, hatchbacks, pickups, SUVs and commercial vans. In these applications, packaging, torque and existing engine families often mattered more than a performance image.

Are five-cylinder engines still available?

Audi’s December 2025 manufacturer release described the RS 3 2.5 TFSI as continuing the company’s five-cylinder tradition and supplied the 294 kW (400 PS), 500 Nm specification for the version discussed. That statement is dated and attributed to Audi; it does not prove the RS 3 is sold in every country or that it is the only current five-cylinder car worldwide.

Older examples in this guide are historical vehicles, not new-car recommendations. Road & Track’s statement that only two cars remained reflects the publication period of its 2023 feature and should not be treated as a current global inventory count. No complete worldwide census or market-wide prevalence statistic is established here.

Common mistakes when shopping or researching

  • Assuming a model family always used five cylinders. Many listed cars were also sold with four-, six- or different diesel engines.
  • Confusing a five-cylinder with a specific displacement. Five-cylinder engines ranged from roughly two liters to 3.5 liters in the examples above.
  • Treating “inline” and “VR” as interchangeable. Volkswagen’s VR5 is a narrow-angle layout, not a conventional straight-five.
  • Transferring specifications between markets. Audi 100/200 naming, Ford Focus availability, Volkswagen engines and diesel outputs changed by region.
  • Using a sound clip as identification. Exhaust design and turbo hardware alter the note, and unrelated five-cylinder engines can sound different.
  • Ordering parts by model name alone. Engine code, emissions equipment and production date determine compatibility more reliably.

Sources and further historical detail

Audi’s official timeline and exhibition materials provide the dated Audi milestones, firing order and RS 3 description: Audi, December 3, 2025; Audi historical overview; and Audi museum exhibition release, July 31, 2026. The Mercedes-Benz and broader industry context comes from Classic & Sports Car, Car and Driver and Road & Track. Always compare those historical references with the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact vehicle you are evaluating.
