Calendar and Keep use separate executables, destination settings and filters: run tw_gcal_sync for a calendar and tw_gkeep_sync for a Keep note. This is different from Taskwarrior’s built-in task sync, which replicates Taskwarrior data between Taskwarrior installations.
What this setup actually synchronizes
Taskwarrior does not provide a native Google Calendar or Google Keep connector. The documented route is the independent taskwarrior-syncall project, which supplies two bidirectional bridges. One maps filtered Taskwarrior tasks to Google Calendar events; the other maps filtered tasks to checked or unchecked items in a Google Keep note.

| Destination | Executable | Google object | Taskwarrior scope | Required destination preparation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Calendar | tw_gcal_sync |
Calendar events | Tags and/or project filters | Select an existing calendar or allow the tool to create one |
| Google Keep | tw_gkeep_sync |
Checklist items in one note | Tags and/or project filters | Choose a note by its full title and enable checkboxes |
Both bridges are described as bidirectional, but the available documentation does not establish that every Taskwarrior field maps identically to both services or that conflict outcomes are identical in every case. Treat the setup as a synchronization utility, not as a lossless database replication system.

Check your Taskwarrior and Python versions
The project README says it was tested with Taskwarrior 2.6.1, should work with versions >=2.6, and requires Python 3.8 or later. That is a project compatibility statement, not an independent certification. Current official Taskwarrior documentation covers Taskwarrior 3.5.0, while the integration README does not provide a current Taskwarrior 3 compatibility matrix. If you run Taskwarrior 3, confirm compatibility with the project’s current instructions before enabling two-way updates.

Prepare Google access
Install the project’s Google extras with pip according to its README, then complete the documented Google OAuth and client-secret configuration. The exact consent screens and credential requirements can change with Google account policy, so follow the current project setup text and the prompts shown for your account rather than copying an old credential file.
Google Keep’s API documentation describes programmatic Keep access and an administrator-controlled domain-wide access option. Google Calendar’s API documentation describes incremental calendar synchronization. Those platform documents do not establish the third-party project’s exact current OAuth scopes or whether every consumer-account arrangement is supported. Inspect the permissions requested during consent and use an account or test workspace whose data you are comfortable exposing to the bridge.
Use a test destination first
Create a dedicated test calendar and a dedicated Keep note. Apply a distinctive Taskwarrior tag or a small project to only a few tasks. This limits the first synchronization and makes it easier to identify an incorrect filter, field mapping or conflict decision before personal or work-wide data is involved.

Install and configure the bridge
- Install the
taskwarrior-syncallpackage and its Google-related extras using the project’s current pip instructions. - Complete Google client credentials and OAuth authorization as documented by the project. Keep the credential files protected with the same care as other account tokens.
- Verify that the two command-line programs,
tw_gcal_syncandtw_gkeep_sync, are available in the environment where you intend to run them. - Choose a unique combination name for each destination configuration. Keep a written record of the combination name, selected filter and conflict strategy.
- Run one destination at a time. Calendar and Keep are separate configurations; authorizing one does not configure the other.
The project’s command help is the authority for option names and current syntax. Do not assume that a flag accepted by tw_gcal_sync is also accepted by tw_gkeep_sync.
Sync Taskwarrior with Google Calendar
1. Select a narrow Taskwarrior filter
Decide which tasks belong on the calendar. The documented bridge can scope work with Taskwarrior tags, a project, or both. A dedicated tag such as calendar is useful when only some tasks should become events; a project filter is convenient when an entire project belongs in one calendar.

Start with a handful of tasks whose titles, due dates and completion states are easy to recognize. Avoid selecting every pending task until you have reviewed the first result on both sides.
2. Choose or create the calendar
Use the Calendar bridge’s destination selection to choose the calendar that should receive events. Its command help states that it can create the calendar if it does not exist, so a test calendar can be created specifically for the combination. Check the resulting calendar in Google Calendar before expanding the filter.
3. Run tw_gcal_sync
Launch tw_gcal_sync with the Google authorization, calendar choice and Taskwarrior tag/project filter required by the project’s current configuration. The first run may ask you to approve Google access or identify an existing combination. Let it finish, then inspect the event list and the originating Taskwarrior tasks.
4. Verify both directions
- Confirm that each selected task produced the expected calendar event rather than an event for an out-of-scope task.
- Change one safe test item in Calendar and run the bridge again to see how that change is represented in Taskwarrior.
- Complete or modify one test task in Taskwarrior and verify the corresponding event after another run.
- Record any fields that do not travel in the way you expect; the documentation does not promise identical field mapping for every property.
Only after this review should you broaden the tag or project filter. The narrow-first approach is a safety practice, not a reported performance test.
Sync Taskwarrior with Google Keep
1. Prepare a named checklist note
Create or select the Keep note that will hold the synchronized items. The bridge identifies the note by its full title, so copy the title exactly, including punctuation and spacing. Turn on checkboxes in that note before the first run; a free-form text note is not the documented destination shape.

2. Define the Taskwarrior scope
As with Calendar, select a dedicated tag, a project, or both. For a first pass, use a few tasks with unambiguous titles. Keep the filter stable while you learn how the combination behaves.
3. Run tw_gkeep_sync
Start tw_gkeep_sync with the authorized Google account, the Keep note’s full title and the chosen Taskwarrior filter. The documented behavior creates Taskwarrior tasks for checked-list items and creates Keep items for Taskwarrior tasks matching the filter. Because the operation is bidirectional, review the note and Taskwarrior after the initial run before adding more items.
4. Test completion changes
- Check one Keep item and synchronize; verify how completion appears in Taskwarrior.
- Complete one in-scope Taskwarrior task and synchronize; verify the corresponding Keep item.
- Test an edit to a title or other supported property and note which side becomes authoritative when both changed.
Do not assume that a Keep checklist can represent every Taskwarrior attribute. Keep’s destination model is a list of items, whereas Taskwarrior includes structured fields such as projects, tags, dates and urgency.
Conflict strategies: decide which change wins
A conflict occurs when the same synchronized item changes on both sides before the bridge reconciles them. The project lists strategies including most-recent, least-recent and options that always prefer one side. Select deliberately rather than accepting an unknown default.
| Strategy family | Effect when both sides changed | When it may fit | Risk to understand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most-recent | Prefers the version with the newer recorded change | When timestamps reliably reflect the change you want to keep | Clock differences or an automated update can make the newer version unexpected |
| Least-recent | Prefers the older recorded version | When preserving the earlier value is more important than accepting later edits | Intentionally discards a newer edit |
| Always prefer one side | Taskwarrior or the Google destination consistently wins | When one service is your authoritative editor | Changes made on the losing side can be overwritten |
The available documentation does not claim that conflict handling is lossless. Write down the selected strategy beside the combination name, and avoid simultaneous edits during your first tests. If an unexpected value survives, stop broad synchronization, preserve copies of both sides, and consult the project’s current conflict and reset documentation before rerunning.

Resetting a combination safely
The README documents a combination-specific reset procedure rather than a universal “undo” switch. A reset involves removing the state/configuration associated with that combination and clearing one side before starting again. Because the exact filenames, commands and version behavior can change, use the current README instructions verbatim.
- Stop scheduled or repeated sync runs for the affected combination.
- Export or copy the relevant Taskwarrior tasks and the Google events or Keep items so you have a record.
- Identify the exact combination name used by the bridge.
- Follow the project’s documented removal of that combination’s state and configuration.
- Clear the selected side as instructed, then recreate the filter and run a small test set.
Do not delete an entire Taskwarrior data directory or a whole Google calendar or Keep account merely because one combination is out of sync.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep this bridge separate from Taskwarrior replica synchronization
Taskwarrior’s own task sync serves a different purpose: it shares Taskwarrior records between Taskwarrior replicas through a supported synchronization backend. It does not turn tasks into Google Calendar events or Keep checklist items.
| Aspect | Google bridge | Taskwarrior replica sync |
|---|---|---|
| Destination | Google Calendar or Google Keep | Another Taskwarrior instance |
| Mechanism | Third-party API integration with destination-specific executables | TaskChampion-based Taskwarrior synchronization |
| Configuration | Google credentials, destination selection, filters and conflict strategy | Supported sync-server or documented cloud-storage setup |
| Data shape | Calendar events or checklist items mapped from filtered tasks | Taskwarrior records replicated as Taskwarrior data |
Current Taskwarrior 3 documentation says its local database is not suited to unsupported external file synchronization tools such as rsync or Syncthing; using those tools can cause corruption. If you need replicas, use the supported TaskChampion server or documented cloud-storage configuration instead of copying the local database files.

The official task-sync(5) manual states: “Task data is encrypted by Taskwarrior, and the sync server never sees un-encrypted data.” That statement applies to the TaskChampion sync-server path. It does not describe the privacy properties of the Google Calendar/Keep bridge, which sends task content through Google APIs.
Best Value
Privacy, permissions and operational safeguards
- Review OAuth scopes: approve only the permissions shown by the current consent flow and project documentation.
- Limit the filter: tags and projects can keep confidential tasks out of shared calendars or notes.
- Use a dedicated Google destination: a test calendar or note makes accidental disclosure easier to detect and reverse.
- Protect credentials: restrict filesystem access to client secrets and refresh tokens, and avoid placing them in shared repositories.
- Consider account policy: managed Google Workspace administrators may control API access, including domain-wide access for Keep.
- Audit after changes: inspect both services after changing filters, conflict settings or credentials.
The consulted Google API overviews explain platform capabilities but do not verify the third-party project’s exact current scopes or support for every account type. Treat the permissions displayed during setup as the authoritative list for your installation.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No events or Keep items appear
- Confirm that the task matches the selected tag and/or project exactly.
- Check that you selected the intended calendar or entered the Keep note’s full title.
- For Keep, verify that checkboxes are enabled in the note.
- Run the command’s current help output and review its selected combination and account.
Google authorization fails
Recheck the client-secret configuration, the account selected in the browser and any administrator restrictions. Revoke an obsolete authorization only if the project’s current instructions tell you how to recreate it safely; do not delete unrelated Google credentials.
Tasks appear duplicated
Stop repeated runs, identify whether more than one combination targets the same filter and destination, and compare the recorded combination names. Do not start a second configuration against the same calendar or note until the first state is understood.
Changes keep reverting
Inspect the conflict strategy. An always-prefer strategy can overwrite edits on the losing side, while timestamp strategies can be affected by the recorded change time. Preserve the desired value, change the strategy only with a documented plan, and test on one item before resuming broad synchronization.
Taskwarrior behaves unexpectedly after file copying
If you used rsync, Syncthing or another unsupported file-sharing method on a Taskwarrior 3 database, stop that process. The official documentation warns that this database is not designed for such external synchronization and may be corrupted. Restore from a known-good backup and move replica synchronization to the supported TaskChampion approach.
A cautious operating routine
- Back up Taskwarrior and note the current Google destination state.
- Run one bridge with one combination and a small tag or project filter.
- Review created objects on both sides.
- Make one controlled edit in each direction.
- Confirm the conflict strategy behaves as intended.
- Document the combination name, destination, filter, account and strategy.
- Expand the filter gradually, checking for unintended tasks after each change.
- Revisit credentials and permissions when Google account policy or the integration version changes.
Bottom line
taskwarrior-syncall is the documented way to connect Taskwarrior with Google services in this workflow: tw_gcal_sync for filtered tasks as Calendar events and tw_gkeep_sync for filtered tasks as Keep checklist items. Configure each destination independently, test with a narrow scope, choose a conflict policy you understand, and keep this API bridge separate from Taskwarrior’s supported TaskChampion replica synchronization. Because the project’s published compatibility statement centers on Taskwarrior 2.6.1 and does not provide a current Taskwarrior 3 matrix, verify your installed versions and back up before relying on two-way updates.
