The lock’s security depends on more than its biometric: matching accuracy, resistance to spoofing, how biometric data is stored, protection for the app and communications, and the ways you can enter when recognition fails all matter. No independently comparable attack-test results were found for the lock examples discussed below, so the modality alone cannot identify a winner.
What makes a biometric smart lock secure?
A biometric reader captures a trait, compares it with an enrolled template, and contributes to a decision to unlock. Security depends on that full process and the surrounding lock—not simply on whether the reader recognizes a palm, face, or finger.

- Matching performance: Ask for false-match or false-accept rates (how often an unauthorized person is accepted) and false-reject rates (how often an enrolled user is rejected). Meaningful results identify the test conditions, threshold, population, protocol, and product version.
- Presentation-attack detection (PAD): Look for evidence about the attacks tested and the attack presentation accept rate. A recognition-rate or speed claim by itself does not show that a reader resists spoofing.
- Enrollment and data handling: Find out where templates are stored, who can access them, and whether they can be deleted. Check the manufacturer’s security and privacy documentation.
- The rest of the lock: Review how the app account, radio communications, firmware updates, and recovery methods are protected. Biometrics do not secure those parts automatically.
- Reliability and fit: Check how the lock handles failed reads, power loss, and emergency entry, and confirm that the exact model fits your door and works with your regional ecosystem.
Independent reports are more useful than feature lists because they can document the test method and results. Manufacturer pages establish what a company says its product offers; they do not provide an independent comparison of security.
What standards can—and cannot—tell you
FIDO biometric evaluation
The FIDO Alliance’s Biometric Requirements, version 5.0, describes measures including false accept rate (FAR), false reject rate (FRR), and impostor attack presentation accept rate (IAPAR). Its examples include printed or displayed face images, fingerprint artifacts, and latent prints. For the certification context described in the document, FIDO says facial recognition shall implement PAD. These criteria help explain what rigorous biometric evaluation considers; they do not show that a particular smart lock has been tested or certified under them.

NIST guidance has a specific scope
NIST SP 800-63B, in the current SP 800-63-4 edition, says a biometric system in its covered digital-authenticator context shall achieve a false-match rate (FMR) of one in 10,000 or better across demographic groups. In that same context, it says PAD should be implemented for iris and fingerprint modalities and shall be implemented for face recognition. One in 10,000 is a NIST threshold for that covered context, not a measured result for the Aqara or Philips locks below and not a direct ranking of smart-lock modalities.
Biometric security is not whole-system security
The ISO catalog entry for ISO/IEC 19792:2025 describes biometric-specific evaluation aspects including recognition performance, presentation-attack detection, and privacy. It also excludes non-biometric system aspects such as databases and communication channels. That distinction matters for a smart lock: biometric assessment alone does not settle whether the app, data storage, radio link, firmware, or fallback entry method is secure.

What product documentation says about the three modalities
These examples show that the modalities appear in smart-lock products. They are not controlled comparisons, and the cited manufacturer documentation does not establish which is hardest to spoof or safest in use.

Aqara’s US U100 product page describes a smart lock with a fingerprint reader and keypad. Aqara reports a 98.6% recognition rate, recognition in less than 0.5 seconds, and local storage for up to 50 fingerprints. These are manufacturer-stated product specifications, not independently verified security results. Aqara’s announcement says the U100 was available through its Amazon brand stores in the United States and Canada; that is availability information, not an endorsement or security assessment.

Palm vein: Philips 5000 series DDL250XW5KMC/37
Philips’ US product page lists palm-vein recognition for this smart deadbolt. The cited page does not provide comparable independent attack-test results, so the feature alone cannot establish its security relative to a face or fingerprint reader.
Palm vein, face, and fingerprint: Philips DDL902EAFGW/00
Philips’ product document describes the DDL902EAFGW/00 as a palm-and-face-recognition smart lock and also lists fingerprint entry. It specifies palm-vein and facial sensors operating up to one meter away. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent test or evidence that one listed method is more secure than another.

How to choose a lock for your door
- Start with the exact model and region. Confirm the model number, door compatibility, included entry methods, and intended regional ecosystem in the product specifications and installation guide.
- Look for model-specific, independent results. Seek FAR or false-match and FRR results, plus PAD testing that names its methodology and attack instruments. Check that the test applies to the exact model and version you are considering.
- Read how biometric data is handled. Identify where templates are stored, who can access them, and how to remove them. If the documentation does not answer those questions, do not assume the data is stored locally or protected in a particular way.
- Inspect the full access and recovery system. Review keypad, key, app, account, communications, update, and emergency-entry protections where applicable. Consider what happens if recognition fails or power is lost.
- Compare documented evidence, not modality labels. A lock with a named biometric feature or an impressive recognition-rate figure is not automatically more secure than a lock using another modality.
