If you need longer runtime, consider turning off optional features such as Always-on Display or a high refresh rate, and use Battery Saver when needed. These settings involve comfort and convenience trade-offs; their names and exact effects vary by phone.
Which settings are worth changing first?
- Set brightness for comfort. Lower the screen brightness to a level that works in your surroundings, or leave adaptive brightness on if its automatic adjustments suit you. Google lists both lower brightness and automatic brightness as battery-saving options. On Galaxy phones, adaptive brightness responds to ambient light; if its changes bother you, turn it off and choose a level manually. Google’s Android battery guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy battery guidance explain these options.
- Shorten screen timeout. Choose the shortest period that still gives you enough time to read or interact before the screen turns off. Google gives 30 seconds as an example for Pixel phones; Samsung notes that a longer screen timeout uses more battery. Treat the setting as a preference, not a universal ideal. See Google’s Pixel battery settings and Samsung’s Galaxy guidance.
- Review Always-on Display and refresh rate. If your phone has an Always-on Display, switch it off if you do not need it. If it offers a refresh-rate choice, a standard mode can favor battery life over smoother motion. Pixel calls its option Smooth Display; Samsung calls its setting Motion smoothness, with Standard oriented toward battery life and Adaptive toward smoother motion. Not every phone has these controls. Google Pixel Help and Samsung Canada’s display guide describe their respective devices.
Should you leave Adaptive Battery on?
Generally, yes—unless you have a specific problem to troubleshoot. On Pixel phones, Adaptive Battery and battery optimization are on by default. They can reduce how often less-used apps run in the background, which may delay notifications or reduce performance. Google says a new Pixel or a factory-reset Pixel may take a few weeks to adapt to your usage; that timing is Pixel-specific guidance, not a promise for every Android phone. When should you use Battery Saver?
Use Battery Saver when extra runtime matters more than having every feature and background task behave normally. Depending on the phone, it can limit background activity, affect network connections or app behavior, and delay notifications. Samsung’s Power saving mode can be configured to change some behavior, but the choices vary by model. Check your manufacturer’s instructions before relying on a particular effect: Google Android Help, Samsung UK Support, and Samsung Canada Support.
Does Dark theme save battery?
It may save battery on some screens, but it is not a guaranteed upgrade or a fixed amount of extra runtime. Some apps do not follow the system theme. On Android 16 and newer, an expanded dark-theme option can darken more app interfaces; Google cautions that this can alter images or make text harder to read. Choose the theme primarily for comfort and appearance, and check that important apps remain legible. Google Android Accessibility Help.

Android menu paths differ by manufacturer, model, and software version.
