Some banking apps work on Android without Google Play, but there is no universal list: support depends on your bank, account country, Android version and device. Official bank guidance confirms that HSBC Hong Kong, DBS Hong Kong and Standard Chartered Hong Kong offer bank-hosted APK downloads. Starling Bank, by contrast, requires Google Play on Android and directs customers without it to another supported device. Check your own bank’s current rules before installing anything.
Banking apps that banks say can work without Google Play
These are specific examples from official support pages, not a compatibility list for every bank in those countries. Each bank’s app and requirements apply to the market named.

AppGallery is Huawei’s official app distribution platform, but an AppGallery listing does not guarantee that a particular bank app supports every Huawei phone or software version. How to check whether your bank supports your phone
- Find the bank’s page for your account’s country. Search the bank’s official site for the exact app name and terms such as “APK,” “AppGallery” or “without Google Play.” Make sure the page is for the country where your account is held; an app listed for one market may not serve customers elsewhere.
- Read the device requirements, not just the download options. Check the minimum Android version and whether the bank requires Google Play services or other device capabilities. A listing or installable APK alone does not establish that sign-in, notifications or every banking feature will work on your phone.
- Use only a bank-authorized download channel. If your bank offers an APK, get it from the bank’s official page and follow its installation instructions. DBS explicitly warns customers not to download its APK from other sources because counterfeit apps can expose customers to phishing or Trojan risks. Standard Chartered likewise identifies its listed channels as authorized; HSBC points customers to its own download page.
- Plan for updates. Follow the bank’s update instructions and revisit its official page when prompted or regularly if the bank advises it. HSBC recommends returning to its page for newer APK versions, and DBS tells APK users to check its site for updates and install them manually.
- Use a bank-approved fallback if the app is unsupported. Check whether the bank offers web banking or another supported device. DBS specifically says iBanking can be used for non-high-risk transactions when its app cannot be updated. Starling advises customers without Google Play to use a different supported Android or iOS device.
Why the answer varies
The bank determines how its app is distributed and which device configurations it supports. Some publish an APK themselves or offer an AppGallery listing; others make Google Play a requirement. The examples above show that Android minimum versions and feature caveats also differ, even among banks that provide an APK.

Do not treat a bank’s APK as interchangeable with an app from another market, or assume that a workaround for Google services is approved. CIMB Thai, for example, publishes a platform and security factsheet for its own app; it does not establish a no-Google-Play route for other banks or markets. If your bank does not list a supported route
- Ask the bank whether your exact phone model, Android version and country are supported.
- Do not install an APK from a third-party repository or use an unofficial Google-services workaround for banking.
- Use the bank’s official web banking or another device the bank says it supports. If neither option is clear, contact the bank before entering account credentials on the unsupported phone.
