You can usually unzip an ordinary ZIP file with tools already included in your computer: use Extract All in Windows File Explorer, double-click the ZIP in macOS Finder, or choose Extract all in the Chromebook Files app. These methods do not require installing a separate app, but a work-device policy may still restrict access.
Windows: extract a ZIP in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer and find the
.zipfile. - Right-click it and select Extract All.
- Choose where to put the extracted files if prompted, then select Extract and open the resulting folder.
This is the simplest option for most Windows users. Microsoft documents the built-in ZIP workflow in its Windows guide to zipping and unzipping files.

Windows command-line alternatives
If File Explorer does not offer extraction, Windows includes command-line options that may work if they are available and permitted on your work computer. You do not need these for a routine ZIP when the graphical option works.
PowerShell
In PowerShell, use Expand-Archive with the ZIP’s path and a destination folder. For example:

Expand-Archive -LiteralPath 'C:UsersyouDownloadsarchive.zip' -DestinationPath 'C:UsersyouDownloadsarchive-extracted'
Microsoft Learn says the destination folder is created if it does not exist, and that -LiteralPath treats the path exactly as supplied. The cited Windows PowerShell 5.1 documentation describes a 2 GB maximum file size for its underlying API; that is a constraint of that documented implementation, not a universal limit for ZIP files or every PowerShell version. See Microsoft’s Expand-Archive documentation for Windows PowerShell 5.1.
tar
Windows also includes tar, which Microsoft documents for listing and extracting ZIP archives. Open a command prompt or PowerShell in the archive’s folder and run:

tar -xf archive.zip
Replace archive.zip with the file’s actual name, or provide its path. Microsoft’s documentation says the Windows version is based on libarchive’s bsdtar; consult its tar command documentation for details.
macOS: expand the ZIP in Finder
- Open Finder and locate the
.zipfile. - Double-click the ZIP.
- Open the expanded item in the same folder as the archive.
Apple gives the same instruction in its guide to zipping and unzipping files and folders on Mac. If extraction fails, Apple identifies insufficient free disk space or a problem with the received file as possible causes.

If extraction is missing or fails
- You do not see “Extract All” in Windows: Check that the file is actually a ZIP. Another archive format may use a similar-looking filename, and built-in format support depends on Windows version. Microsoft specifically documents built-in support for ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR in Windows 11 version 24H2; do not assume an older or differently configured computer supports all of them. See Microsoft’s Windows archive support information.
- A command is unavailable or blocked: Your organization may restrict command-line tools or other features. Use the approved support channel and ask IT which built-in method is allowed.
- macOS reports an extraction problem: Check available disk space. If the ZIP came from someone else and appears damaged or incomplete, ask them to create and resend it.
- The archive is password-protected, split into parts, unusually large, or damaged: The platform guidance cited here does not establish one built-in solution that works across operating systems for all these cases. Ask the sender for a standard ZIP or another company-approved format, or follow your IT team’s instructions.
- The files are confidential: Do not upload the archive to an online extractor unless your employer’s policy explicitly allows it.
Which built-in method should you use?
| Computer | First method to try | Fallback or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | File Explorer: right-click the ZIP and select Extract All. | Try PowerShell Expand-Archive or tar -xf only if available and permitted. Support for formats beyond ZIP depends on Windows version. |
| macOS | Double-click the ZIP in Finder. | Check free space or ask the sender to resend a file that may be damaged. |
| Chromebook | In Files, right-click the zipped folder and select Extract all. | Follow your organization’s support guidance if the option is unavailable or blocked. |
