Neither S3 Tables nor S3 Express One Zone is automatically cheaper. They solve different problems: S3 Tables is managed Apache Iceberg storage for analytics, while Express One Zone is a low-latency object-storage class placed in one Availability Zone. Choose the service that fits the workload, then compare its full costs in your target Region—including requests, data movement, table maintenance, and resilience.
Are S3 Tables and S3 Express One Zone alternatives?
Not in the usual sense. Both store data in Amazon S3, but they organize it for different work. S3 Tables provides managed Iceberg tables for analytics engines such as Athena, Redshift, and Spark. Express One Zone stores objects in directory buckets and targets frequently accessed data that benefits from consistent single-digit-millisecond access.

AWS describes S3 Tables as storage optimized for analytics, with features intended to improve query performance and reduce table-storage costs. That does not mean it is a drop-in replacement for object storage, or that every analytics workload will cost less than an equivalent design using another S3 service.

| What is stored? | Tabular analytics data in Apache Iceberg format | Objects in directory buckets |
| What is the main benefit? | Managed table operations, including compaction and snapshot management | Low-latency access for frequently accessed objects |
| What changes the cost? | Storage, table requests, maintenance activity, and the analytics workload | Storage, request mix, applicable transfer or retrieval charges, and recovery design |
| What is the key design tradeoff? | Managed table functionality and its associated maintenance activity | Placement in one Availability Zone rather than multi-AZ placement |
When should you evaluate S3 Tables?
Your data is an Iceberg analytics table
Evaluate S3 Tables when the data is tabular, your tools can work with Iceberg tables, and table-level organization is useful to the way you query and maintain data. AWS manages table maintenance such as compaction and snapshot management, which can reduce the operational work your team handles directly.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Include maintenance in the estimate
Compaction is enabled by default and can add cost. AWS says sort and z-order compaction may cost more than binpack. Maintenance settings can be changed, but disabling a feature also changes the work the service performs; account for any replacement work your team or pipeline would need to do. Estimate storage, table requests, and applicable maintenance alongside the analytics workload rather than comparing only a storage-rate headline.
When should you evaluate S3 Express One Zone?
Your application needs fast object access
Evaluate Express One Zone for frequently accessed object data where low latency matters and the application can place compute and data in a chosen Availability Zone. Its performance profile and directory-bucket organization differ from managed Iceberg tables; it does not provide S3 Tables’ table format and table-maintenance service.

Price the single-AZ design honestly
Express One Zone redundantly stores data across multiple devices within the selected Availability Zone. AWS describes its design availability as 99.95% within that one AZ. This is not multi-AZ placement. If your recovery or availability requirements call for protection beyond that AZ, include the additional architecture and its costs in the comparison rather than treating the service’s storage rate as the cost of the complete solution.

What do the announced price reductions tell you?
The announcements show that prices changed, not which service wins for a particular workload. AWS’s reductions were dated and applied to different charges, so they are not a direct comparison of monthly bills.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
| Service and announcement | Announced change | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Express One Zone, AWS announcement effective April 10, 2025 | 31% lower storage prices, 55% lower PUT request prices, and 85% lower GET request prices. AWS also reported a 60% reduction in per-GB upload and retrieval charges and a change to charging for all bytes. | These are announced reductions, not current absolute prices or a quote for a particular Region and request pattern. |
| S3 Tables compaction, AWS announcement on July 15, 2025; changes effective July 1, 2025 | Up to 90% lower compaction processing fees: per-object pricing fell 50%; per-byte processing prices fell 90% for binpack and 80% for sort and z-order compaction. | The reduction concerns compaction charges, not a claim that total S3 Tables costs fell by the same percentage. |
Use AWS’s current S3 pricing information for the Region and configuration you plan to deploy. Live rates can change, and the announcements above do not establish today’s price for your workload.
How do you compare the full cost?
- Define the workload and required outcome. Record whether the data needs Iceberg table semantics and analytics-engine integration, or whether the main requirement is low-latency object access. Exclude any option that cannot meet the workload’s functional needs.
- Set the Region and availability design. Check current service support and the available AZ choices for your planned deployment. State whether single-AZ placement meets your recovery requirements; price additional resilience if it does not.
- Estimate S3 Tables usage. Count stored GB-months, table requests, and expected compaction and other maintenance activity. Include the table and query patterns that drive the design.
- Estimate Express One Zone usage. Count stored GB-months, GET and PUT requests, bytes uploaded and retrieved, and applicable transfer or retrieval charges. Include the costs of the chosen AZ and recovery design.
- Use the current regional rate card. Apply the current prices to each usage estimate, using the same period and workload assumptions for both options. Recheck the rate card before committing because prices and availability can change.
- Test the model against changing usage. Run scenarios for changes in object count, request volume, data movement, query selectivity, and table maintenance. A design that is less expensive at one access pattern may not remain so as the workload changes.
Do not count only storage. The cost comparison is meaningful only when the two designs deliver the required outcome and account for their distinct request, maintenance, data-movement, and resilience costs. AWS’s product descriptions and dated reductions do not provide a published apples-to-apples total-cost figure that identifies a universal winner.

Is Express One Zone available in your Region?
Availability is deployment-specific and can change. On September 17, 2026, AWS announced Express One Zone in seven additional Regions, bringing the announced total to 15 Regions at that time. Confirm current support for your target Region and AZ before finalizing the design; the announcement is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of current availability everywhere.
