To improve Arlo motion alerts, first adjust the camera’s view and Activity Zone to exclude irrelevant movement, then use Arlo’s Motion Detection Test to set sensitivity. Filter notification categories or mode rules separately if you want fewer alerts but still want recordings. There is no single sensitivity value that works for every camera and scene.
Why camera placement and zones should come first
Lowering sensitivity can reduce unwanted alerts, but it can also keep real movement from triggering a recording. First remove avoidable motion from the camera’s view. Re-aim it so roads, waving branches, flags, or other recurring distractions are outside the frame where possible. Redraw Activity Zones after repositioning.

Arlo recommends mounting the camera at least 7 feet (2 meters) above the ground, angling it slightly downward, and placing it within 10–15 feet (3–4.5 meters) of the expected movement. Its guidance says motion crossing the view from side to side is easier to detect than motion straight toward or away from the camera, and gives 5–20 feet (1.5–6 meters) as the best detection area. In the Arlo Secure App, create an Activity Zone around the entryway, walkway, gate, or other area you want monitored. Keep streets and persistently moving objects outside it. Arlo notes that only part of a person or object needs to enter a zone for motion to register. The number of zones and whether the feature is available can depend on the camera model, power source, and subscription. Check Arlo’s Activity Zone instructions for your device.

How to set motion sensitivity with a repeatable test
- Open the test: In the Arlo Secure App, open Devices, select the camera, open its settings, then Default Mode Settings and Motion Detection Test. Labels or paths can vary by app version and model.
- Start at Low: Walk across the camera’s view from about 5–10 feet away. Arlo recommends starting at Low.
- Raise the test level: Increase the test level until the camera’s LED blinks to indicate that it detects your movement.
- Save the actual setting separately: The test does not save a new sensitivity value. Adjust the Motion Detection slider in the applicable mode or rule after testing.
- Check the result in your real scene: If genuine movement is missed, raise sensitivity; if unwanted motion still triggers events, revisit the framing and zone before lowering it further.
Arlo’s test procedure is described in its motion sensitivity instructions. No fixed slider value is established as best for every scene.

Reduce alerts without losing recordings
Smart Notifications can filter categories such as people, vehicles, animals, and other motion on a per-camera basis. Arlo says that turning off a category’s notifications does not prevent its recordings from appearing in the Feed. If you want recordings without an alert for every event, edit the notification rules for the relevant mode or use a custom mode configured to record without sending notifications. Check each mode that can activate the camera so another rule does not continue sending alerts.

Auto Zoom & Tracking and digital zoom
Arlo advises turning off Auto Zoom & Tracking while using Activity Zones because tracking can affect zone accuracy. On compatible 2K or 4K devices, digital zoom may also reduce recording resolution: Arlo warns that a digitally zoomed view will not record in 2K or 4K. Review Arlo’s Activity Zone troubleshooting guidance before using zoom to crop the scene.

When an event arrives late
A delayed recording is not necessarily a sensitivity problem. Check the camera card’s signal strength and reduce wireless interference. Arlo recommends keeping the camera at least 6 feet (2 meters) from the router or SmartHub. For Arlo Go cellular models, check that mobile signal is adequate. What to check if unwanted alerts continue
- Confirm that the camera is aimed at the intended area and that its Activity Zone excludes the source of recurring motion.
- Verify that Auto Zoom & Tracking is off when using zones.
- Test sensitivity again with movement crossing the frame, then save the Motion Detection slider separately from the test.
- Check whether the alert is caused by a notification category or mode rule rather than by a need to change detection sensitivity.
- Confirm your exact camera model, app version, power setup, and subscription before relying on Activity Zones or Smart Notifications; feature support varies.
