On Apple TV 4K, start with Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format set to Auto. The main controls that can change Atmos or surround output are Audio Format, the Dolby Atmos toggle, and Continuous Audio Connection. Audio Output selects where sound goes; Audio Mode can help with certain TV compatibility problems. None of these settings can add an Atmos soundtrack to content that does not have one or make an incompatible device or connection support Atmos.

How to turn on Dolby Atmos on Apple TV 4K
- Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. Leave the format on Auto as the baseline; menu labels and available options can depend on the Apple TV model and connected equipment. Apple Support
- Check Audio Output and select the TV, soundbar, receiver, or HomePod destination you intend to use.
- Check that Dolby Atmos is enabled if its toggle appears. Apple lists supported setups including one or two HomePod speakers, an Atmos-capable TV, an Atmos soundbar with an Atmos-capable TV, or an Atmos-enabled AV receiver. Apple Support
- In the app or title’s audio information, look for the Dolby Atmos icon. Atmos is available only when the content and app provide it. Apple also says Atmos will not play if Quick Start is turned off. Apple Support
How the HDMI connection affects Atmos
For an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver, Apple recommends connecting Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the soundbar or receiver, then connecting that device’s output to the TV. Apple says its high-bandwidth Atmos format does not work over ARC connections. The capabilities of the TV, receiver, soundbar, and connection determine whether another routing arrangement can pass the required audio.

Why does my receiver show Atmos during stereo audio?
A receiver’s Atmos indicator is not always proof that the source program contains an Atmos mix. Apple notes that older receivers might show an Atmos signal while the audio plays in its original format—stereo, multichannel, or Atmos. Continuous Audio Connection uses Dolby MAT to smooth transitions between formats, and Apple notes it can affect a receiver’s ability to identify stereo for upmixing. What to try when Atmos is missing or audio is unstable
- Return Audio Format to Auto unless you have a reason to use a manual format. Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 is for equipment that lacks Atmos or multichannel PCM support, not a route to Atmos.
- Confirm Audio Output points to the intended device and verify the HDMI path between Apple TV, audio equipment, and TV.
- Check for the Dolby Atmos icon in the content’s audio information, and review whether the setup is supported and Quick Start is on. Apple Support
- If sound is missing or unstable, Apple suggests reseating the HDMI connection, trying another cable, changing Audio Format, turning off Continuous Audio Connection, or setting Audio Mode to 16-bit when appropriate. For HDMI 2.1, Apple recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable; for HDMI 2.0, it recommends a Premium High Speed HDMI cable.
