Which settings are most worth changing first?
Begin with the display: it is often the easiest drain to reduce without disabling useful phone functions. After that, review battery use and adjust only apps or features that are contributing to the problem.

There is no universal Android menu layout. Google notes that some battery-saving actions apply only to Android 13 and later; the exact options also vary by manufacturer and model. If a path below does not match your phone, check the maker’s support instructions.
Reduce screen drain
Lower brightness and set a shorter timeout
Reduce brightness to a comfortable level and choose a shorter period before the display turns off. On Pixel phones, the timeout setting is under Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout. On other Android phones, look under Display or a similarly named section. Google lists both brightness and screen timeout as battery-saving options in its Android battery guidance.

Try adaptive brightness
If it suits your habits, enable adaptive brightness so the phone can adjust screen brightness automatically. The option may be absent or named differently on some models; you can still adjust brightness manually.
Consider dark theme and keyboard effects
Dark theme can save battery on some screens, according to Google’s Android dark-theme guidance. Treat it as a conditional benefit rather than a guaranteed saving. You can also turn off keyboard sounds or vibration if you do not need them. On some phones, Battery Saver may switch on dark theme automatically.
For supported Pixel models, Google also recommends turning off Always-on Display and Smooth Display in its Pixel battery guidance. Those are not universal Android settings, and availability depends on the Pixel model and software version.

Find high-drain apps before restricting them
Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage, if your phone provides that route, and look for apps using unusually large amounts of battery. Menu names vary. Google’s Pixel battery troubleshooting identifies downloaded apps as a possible cause of poor battery life.
On Pixel phones, Google recommends leaving apps set to Optimized as the general choice. Some apps expose a separate battery-use control; review background activity for an app that stands out, rather than restricting every app indiscriminately. A restriction may reduce drain but can also delay updates or notifications you rely on.
Keep Adaptive Battery on and use Battery Saver selectively

If available, leave Adaptive Battery or the manufacturer’s equivalent battery optimization enabled. Google Pixel Help says: “Adaptive Battery learns from your phone usage to continuously optimize how apps use battery. To extend battery life, it may reduce performance and delay notifications.” The feature is described in Google’s Pixel guidance on Adaptive Battery and battery optimization; behavior on other Android phones can differ.

On Pixel phones, Google says optimization after initial setup or a factory reset may take a few weeks to take full effect. That timing is Pixel-specific, not a promise for every Android model.
Battery Saver
Turn on Battery Saver manually when you need a longer stretch from the remaining charge, or set a schedule if your phone supports one. It may limit background activity, network connections, features, or visual effects, so messages and other app updates can arrive later. The setting’s name and exact behavior differ by device; Google describes common options in its Android battery guide.
Change connectivity only when you can do without it
- Turn off hotspot or tethering when you have finished sharing the connection.
- Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when practical; Wi-Fi can use less battery in some circumstances.
- Switch off Bluetooth or Location only if you do not need connected accessories, location services, or apps that rely on them.
- Use Airplane mode when you do not need mobile network access.
These controls can affect access and connected features, so they are situational rather than settings to disable permanently. Google’s Android battery advice covers connectivity and other common drain sources.

Reduce demanding activities when battery is low
Settings are only part of the picture. Long navigation or GPS sessions, video streaming, hotspot use, camera use, and graphics-heavy games can consume substantial battery. When you need the phone to last longer, shorten or postpone those activities where possible.
What settings cannot fix, and what to try if drain persists
Settings can reduce avoidable consumption, but they do not restore capacity lost through battery wear. Google’s guidance does not provide a setting-by-setting savings estimate or a way to return a degraded battery to new condition.

If the drain began after a software update, Google says Pixel battery use may be temporarily higher while software downloads and optimizes. Its Pixel guidance says to seek support if unusual drain continues for several days; this is Pixel troubleshooting advice, not a universal diagnosis.
For persistent problems, Google’s general suggestions include restarting the phone and checking for Android and app updates. Contact the phone maker or carrier if the issue remains.
