First, identify whether the attachment is wired, connects through Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth and an app, or is an optical adapter over the phone’s camera. Then test the phone’s built-in camera without the attachment. That separates a phone-camera problem from a fit, connection, permission, or alignment problem—and helps you follow the right model-specific instructions.
Start by testing the phone camera on its own
- Remove the attachment, magnetic mount, and any case that sits around or over the camera area.
- Gently clean the exposed camera lens with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
- Open the phone’s built-in camera app and try focusing on both a nearby and a distant subject.
If the built-in camera still will not focus, the attachment is unlikely to be the only cause. Samsung recommends checking for dirt, covers, or accessories interfering with the lens, and checking for software updates. See Samsung’s focus troubleshooting guidance.

If the built-in camera focuses normally, continue with the checks for your attachment type. Note the exact phone and attachment models first: compatibility, connection steps, and focus behavior are not universal.
If the attachment is wired
- Check the fit: Remove the case if it prevents the connector from seating fully. Inspect the phone port and plug for visible obstruction or damage; do not force a connector.
- Use the specified connection: Check the accessory maker’s instructions for the required cable, USB mode, and phone compatibility. Some Android setups require USB OTG to be enabled.
- Check power and status: Follow the accessory’s indicator-light guidance, and check that the phone and attachment have sufficient charge and current app or software versions if the maker specifies them.
These checks are documented for Insta360 Air, which connects by Micro USB or USB Type-C data and does not use Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth. Its setup should not be treated as the procedure for a different attachment; see the Insta360 Air FAQ.

For a USB accessory on iPhone or iPad
Many USB accessories need the device to be unlocked before they can communicate. If it is not recognized, disconnect it, unlock the iPhone or iPad, and reconnect it, as Apple advises in its USB accessory guidance.
If it connects through an app, Wi‑Fi, or Bluetooth
- Confirm that the specific camera and phone are supported by the companion app. Install or update the app if the maker requires it.
- Follow the camera maker’s pairing sequence and make sure the camera’s wireless feature is enabled. Check whether the instructions require Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or both on the phone.
- Allow the permissions the app requests for its connection method. Depending on the app and operating system, these may include Bluetooth, local network, nearby devices, or location access.
- Check whether another phone is already connected. End that connection if the camera only supports one phone link at a time.
- Check the camera’s operating mode. Some modes prevent a direct connection to a phone.
Wireless requirements vary by camera, app, and operating system. For example, Ricoh’s guidance says an existing phone connection must be ended before another phone connects, and Client Mode can prevent a direct camera-to-phone Wi‑Fi connection on the models covered. If it connects but the image will not focus
For an optical adapter or clip-on lens
Check that the adapter opening is centered over the phone camera you intend to use, and that the adapter does not cover another camera lens or the flash. Remove it and compare the image with a shot from the built-in camera. If alignment is correct but focus remains poor, consult the attachment’s manual for its working distance and focus behavior; these vary by model, so there is no universal adjustment to recommend. Remove it temporarily and retest. Apple says strong magnetic fields can affect lens-position sensors and limit or degrade optical image stabilization and closed-loop autofocus on some iPhone models. This is a diagnostic possibility, not evidence that every magnetic accessory affects every phone. See Apple’s camera guidance for magnetic accessories.

Use the attachment’s manual for model-specific settings
There is no single connection or focus standard for phone camera attachments. The relevant checks depend on whether yours uses a cable, a wireless app connection, or optical alignment. The maker’s instructions determine supported phone models, connection sequence, permissions, software requirements, and— for optical accessories—working distance. Fujifilm’s USB smartphone workflow documentation, for example, is specific to its camera workflow and should not be applied to unrelated attachments.
If the built-in camera works but the attachment still fails after its applicable checks, provide the manufacturer with the phone model, attachment model, connection type, app version, and what happens when you connect or try to focus. That information helps distinguish an unsupported setup from a fault without guessing at a reset or focus setting.
