Set your Android phone’s Driving mode to activate automatically while you drive, then limit the notifications it allows. In Android Auto, use voice features for messages and navigation when practical, switch off optional message summaries if you don’t want them, and set your destination before you leave. These changes can reduce avoidable interruptions, but they do not make screen use while driving safe.
Turn on Driving mode and choose which notifications get through
Driving mode is an Android phone setting, separate from Android Auto. Google’s current instructions give this path: Settings > Modes > Driving. From there, configure the mode to turn on while driving and adjust its notification filters to allow only the alerts you want.

For fewer interruptions, consider limiting or silencing message notifications during a drive. The right filter depends on what you need to hear about; avoid treating every notification as equally urgent. Google notes that some setup steps apply only to Android 14 and later, and menu names or availability can vary by phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse voice features instead of handling messages on the display
Android Auto can announce incoming message notifications and supports spoken interaction for messages. When you need to communicate, use voice features where practical rather than reading, typing, or navigating message screens while the vehicle is moving. You can also set Driving mode to filter message interruptions before they appear.

Voice interaction still takes attention. Keep your focus on the road, and wait until you are parked if a message needs more than a brief spoken response.
Decide whether to keep message summaries on
Android Auto’s Message Summary feature is optional. If you would rather not have messages summarized, turn off Message Summary in Android Auto or Assistant settings; the exact location can vary. Google warns that AI-generated summaries may contain mistakes, and says availability varies by device, region, country, and language.

Set your navigation destination before you drive
Use Google Maps voice guidance and choose or enter your destination before setting off. Google says that typing a destination on the car display requires the vehicle to be in park. If you need to change a route or search for a new place, pull over and park safely first.

Know what Android Auto’s lockouts do—and don’t—do
Android Auto restricts some interactions while the vehicle is moving, including typing messages and scrolling through large lists. Those lockouts apply to specific features; they are not a complete distraction-prevention system or permission to use the display while driving. Avoid screen interaction in motion, and pull over safely before changing settings or doing anything that needs your eyes or hands.

Set up Android Auto before departure
Configure phone and Android Auto settings while parked, with the infotainment system on. For a wired connection, Google specifies a high-quality USB cable for setup; that is a connection requirement, not a safety upgrade. Vehicle controls and phone menus can differ, so make any needed adjustments before you start driving.
