Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a new Radeon graphics card, start with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition’s Default profile, confirm your GPU, driver and display are recognized, and leave manual tuning alone. Change settings only to address a specific need: Anti-Lag for input latency, Boost for performance in supported games, Chill to reduce power use and heat, and synchronization options when you see screen tearing. There is no universal best preset; the right choice depends on your card, driver, game, monitor and priorities.
What should you change first in AMD Adrenalin?
- Check your hardware and driver. Open AMD Software’s System information and confirm the installed Radeon GPU and driver version. If you are troubleshooting a game or feature, check the release notes for that driver. AMD says updates can add game and application support, support new products and fix bugs; available features also vary by hardware and installation configuration. See AMD Software support and the relevant driver release notes.
- Use Default as your baseline. AMD’s predefined profiles are starting points that balance visual quality and performance for different user types. The available choices depend on the supported hardware and current driver, so do not assume another Radeon owner will see the same options. AMD says its software automatically detects and recommends settings after changes to graphics hardware, driver or display configuration; treat that as a recommendation, not a guarantee that every system gets an identical profile. See AMD’s graphics profile guidance.
- Keep uncertain changes per game. Global Graphics settings apply to desktop games and applications when they launch. An application profile can override global settings for an individual game. Prefer a game-specific change when its benefit or compatibility is uncertain, or when it could affect image quality or frame pacing.
- Test one change at a time. Choose a setting to address a particular issue or priority, then assess it in the game where you changed it. That makes it easier to tell whether the setting helped or introduced a trade-off.
Which Adrenalin features match your goal?
These features solve different problems. Check the current software and AMD guidance for your card and driver, since supported hardware, games and behavior can differ.

| Feature | Best fit | Trade-off or compatibility to check | Scope to start with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radeon Anti-Lag | Reducing input-to-display lag in a latency-sensitive game | AMD says it works best when the GPU is the limiting factor. Do not assume it is useful in every game or configuration. | Per-game if you only need it in particular titles |
| Radeon Boost | Improving performance in supported games | It dynamically adjusts resolution based on player input, which can reduce image quality. Game support and behavior are conditional. | Per-game, so you can judge the resolution trade-off in a supported title |
| Radeon Chill | Reducing power use and heat by regulating frame rate in response to movement | AMD’s cited guidance says Chill does not interoperate with Anti-Lag and/or Boost. Do not enable all three together. | Per-game if lower power or heat matters in selected games |
| Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) | Using an in-driver upscaler when you want to render below display resolution | It is an optional scaling tool, not a guaranteed image-quality improvement. Check supported hardware and the setup instructions for your model; distinguish it from upscaling options provided by a game. | Use only where its scaling behavior suits the game and setup |
| Radeon Image Sharpening | Adding perceived visual detail if you prefer a sharper image | Whether the result looks better is a matter of preference. | Try it in the game where you want a sharper image |
Anti-Lag: prioritize responsiveness
Anti-Lag is designed to reduce input-to-display lag by dynamically adjusting frame timing. It is most relevant when responsiveness matters and the GPU is the bottleneck, according to AMD. Try it in a suitable game and judge the result there rather than enabling it everywhere by default. AMD’s Radeon Anti-Lag overview describes the feature.

Boost changes resolution dynamically in response to player input in supported games. That can improve performance, but the image may become less detailed while resolution is reduced. Use it only if the game is supported and that trade-off is acceptable. See AMD’s Radeon Boost overview.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Chill: reduce power and heat, not input lag
Chill regulates frame rate based on movement to conserve power and reduce heat. It serves a different purpose from Anti-Lag and Boost, and AMD’s cited guidance says Chill does not interoperate with either of them. Choose it when lower power use or heat is the goal, not as a universal performance switch. See AMD’s Radeon Chill overview.
Should you enable HYPR-RX, Anti-Lag or FreeSync?
Do not treat these as interchangeable options. Anti-Lag targets responsiveness; the other features address distinct performance or display goals. HYPR-RX is a profile option whose availability and included behavior depend on the supported hardware and software configuration. Check what your installed version actually enables and review the current AMD guidance before relying on it; there is no single HYPR-RX setting that is right for every new Radeon setup. AMD’s HYPR-RX overview describes its supported configuration.

FreeSync is different: enable it only if both the Radeon GPU and monitor support it. Check the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and Adrenalin’s display configuration for your exact models. A new monitor is not necessary if you already have a compatible one. Consult AMD’s FreeSync information and the monitor maker’s documentation.

Start by identifying whether tearing is actually occurring and how your frame rate relates to your display’s refresh rate. FreeSync requires support from both the GPU and monitor. Enhanced Sync is designed for a tear-free experience when frame rate exceeds refresh rate, but AMD says it does not support OpenGL and warns it can cause undesirable behavior in multimedia applications. If problems appear, try a per-game synchronization setting rather than applying the change globally. AMD explains the options in its synchronization guidance.

Should you change tuning, voltage, fan or VRAM settings?
Not at first. Adrenalin offers automatic and manual tuning controls, but which options appear depends on the GPU generation and hardware. Voltage, VRAM, fan and power controls do not have a source-backed universal value that is appropriate for every Radeon card. Leave them at their defaults unless you have a specific reason to tune and can validate the result. AMD describes Smart Access Memory (SAM) as a feature that may improve performance in certain situations; AMD says it is enabled automatically during driver installation on compatible systems, so it is not a manual tuning prerequisite. See AMD’s tuning guidance.
When should you revisit your settings?
Recheck the current driver’s release notes and Adrenalin notifications when a game behaves differently, a feature disappears or a driver update changes your setup. AMD’s release notes are the best place to verify behavior for a particular card and driver; older setup examples should not be taken as proof that every current system has the same controls. See AMD driver downloads and release notes.
