Choose a Fire TV Stick by matching it to your television and the features you’ll use: get an HD model for an HD-only TV, and compare 4K models by HDR and audio support, operating system, Wi-Fi, and remote. For most shoppers, the right choice is the least expensive model available locally that supports the apps and formats they need—not automatically the newest or highest-tier stick.
Start with your TV: HD or 4K?
If your television is HD-only, a 4K stick cannot make its screen display 4K. The Fire TV Stick HD (2026) is the straightforward fit if you do not need 4K playback. If your TV supports 4K, consider one of the 4K models—but check the exact generation, since the name “Fire TV Stick 4K” applies to more than one device.

Check HDR, sound, and remote compatibility
A stick’s format support only helps when the rest of the setup supports it. Compare its listed HDR formats with the television, and its audio formats with the soundbar or receiver. Amazon lists Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos for the 2025 4K Plus; the 2026 4K page explicitly lists HDR10+. Don’t assume one model’s format support applies to another generation.
The 4K Plus is the model whose cited description specifically calls out an Alexa Voice Remote with dedicated power and volume buttons. If those controls matter, confirm the exact model and included remote in the listing before buying.

Consider Wi-Fi and wired networking
Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6 for the 2026 HD and 4K models and the 2025 4K Plus and Select. It describes the 2023 4K Max as supporting Wi-Fi 6E. These labels are compatibility specifications, not evidence that one stick will be faster in every home; results depend on the router, network conditions, and other equipment.

Don’t overlook the operating system and apps
Amazon lists Vega OS 1.1 on the 2026 HD and 2025 4K Select, Vega OS 2.0 on the 2026 4K, and Fire OS 8 on the 2025 4K Plus. The operating-system difference matters most if you depend on particular streaming apps or services. Check support for those apps on the exact model and in your marketplace; the cited pages do not establish app-by-app parity across these operating systems.
Amazon describes the 4K Select as the beginning of a shift to Vega and says future Fire TV Sticks will run Vega. That is Amazon’s roadmap statement, not a guarantee of app availability or support duration for any individual service. Read Amazon’s Fire TV overview and verify the apps you need before choosing.

- Check app support and OS. Look up the services your household uses for the precise model and local marketplace.
- Decide which extras matter. Compare the 4K Plus remote controls, the 4K Max’s listed Wi-Fi 6E and Ambient Experience, and any need for wired Ethernet.
- Compare current local listings. Check the full model name and generation, price, stock, and included accessories. Amazon’s specification pages do not establish live local pricing or availability.
Practical recommendations
- HD television: Start with the Fire TV Stick HD (2026); pay for 4K only if you also plan to use a 4K display.

- 4K on a budget: Compare the 4K Select’s actual price with other models in your region. “Most affordable” is Amazon’s positioning, not an independently verified price comparison.
- Specific interest in Wi-Fi 6E or Ambient Experience: The 2023 4K Max lists those features, but compare its current price, stock, and software support with newer options before deciding.
