To connect most Amazon Echo speakers to Wi-Fi, open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo, then select your model and follow the prompts. If an Echo is already set up, change its saved network in the app. When connection fails, first check whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi, then check the Echo’s distance from the router, the password, and the network band before restarting or resetting it.
What you need before setup
- An Echo and its power adapter.
- A phone or other internet-ready mobile device with the Alexa app installed and updated.
- An Amazon account.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password.
Amazon lists these requirements for the Echo Spot (2024 release); the Alexa app is also the standard setup route for Echo speakers. Setup instructions cited here are from Amazon Customer Service’s US English support pages.

Echo devices without a screen
- In the Alexa app, go to Devices and select your Echo.
- Open Device Settings > Change or remove a Wi-Fi network.

Echo devices with a screen
Amazon directs owners of Echo screen devices to change Wi-Fi using the device’s on-screen settings. Follow the instructions for your exact screen model rather than using the speaker-only app path.

Fix common Echo Wi-Fi problems
Work through these checks in order, starting with the least disruptive. They help distinguish a problem with the home network from one affecting only the Echo.

1. Check whether the Wi-Fi works on another device
Try a phone, tablet, or computer on the same network. If that device also cannot connect, the issue may be the router, internet service, or an outage—not the Echo. Restart the router and Echo. If several devices still cannot get online during setup, contact your internet service provider. Amazon’s guidance is in its setup connection troubleshooting.
2. Move the Echo closer to the router
Amazon recommends placing the Echo within 30 feet (10 meters) of the wireless router while troubleshooting. Move it away from potential sources of interference, including microwaves, baby monitors, and other electronics. These are troubleshooting recommendations, not a guarantee that every location within that distance will have a strong signal. See Amazon’s guidance for ongoing Wi-Fi issues.

3. Confirm the Wi-Fi password
If other devices connect successfully but the Echo does not, check that you entered the correct network password. If the password changed recently, update the Echo’s saved Wi-Fi settings in the Alexa app or, for a screen model, in its on-device settings.

4. Try the other Wi-Fi band if the names are separate
Echo devices support common 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz home networks using 802.11a/b/g/n. If your router shows separate network names (SSIDs) for the two bands and the Echo has trouble connecting, try the other network. Echo devices cannot connect to ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networks. Amazon explains these network requirements in its Wi-Fi settings guidance.

5. Temporarily reduce network load
If the password is correct and other devices can connect, temporarily turn off a few other devices using the network and see whether the Echo connects more reliably. Treat this as a diagnostic check, not a permanent fix; if it helps, the router or network conditions may need attention.
6. Restart the Echo, then retry setup
Unplug the Echo, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. If setup still fails, make sure the Alexa app is updated and retry. Amazon’s general setup troubleshooting also lists trying setup with a phone hotspot as an option if earlier steps do not work.
7. Reset only as a last resort
Reset procedures vary by Echo model and by reset type, so do not rely on a universal button sequence. Find the instructions for your exact model in Amazon’s setup troubleshooting guide. On the models covered there, a factory reset erases personal information and device and smart-home connections. Consider that impact before proceeding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUnderstand the setup error before changing settings
Amazon’s smart-home setup error-code table distinguishes several conditions: credential processing, an incorrect Alexa app password, a router connection with no internet access, and a router that is detected but cannot be connected to. Read the code shown and use the corresponding guidance rather than assuming every error means the Wi-Fi password is wrong. For a no-internet condition, check another device and contact your ISP if it also has no internet. For a low-signal or router-detection condition, move the Echo closer to the router and try again.
