Which Allocation Unit Size Should You Use for SSDs, HDDs, and USB Drives?

For ordinary use, choose a compatible file system and keep its default allocation unit size. Storage medium alone does not determine the best cluster size.

For ordinary use, choose a file system that works with your operating systems and devices, then keep the formatter’s default allocation unit size. There is no established universal cluster size that is best for SSDs, HDDs, or USB drives. The file system and workload matter more than the storage medium.

What allocation unit size means

An allocation unit, also called a cluster, is the smallest chunk of space a file system assigns to a file. If a file does not fill its final cluster, the unused portion of that cluster cannot be assigned to another file. Smaller clusters can reduce this slack space when storing many small files; larger clusters mean fewer clusters are needed to describe a given volume.

That trade-off does not establish that one size will make everyday use faster. Allocation-unit size is a file-system setting, not a physical or logical sector size of the drive.

Which size to choose for a Windows NTFS drive

Ordinary use: keep the default

Microsoft’s current NTFS overview identifies 4 KB as the default allocation unit size. For a typical Windows volume, there is no general reason to change it. Microsoft’s NTFS overview also documents how supported size limits vary with cluster size.

Specialized large-file or Data Deduplication workloads

Microsoft gives a 64 KB allocation unit as a specific example for volumes used with Data Deduplication or to host very large files, such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB, with large FRS support. This is specialized guidance, not a recommendation for every SSD or hard drive. NTFS compression is not supported when the allocation unit is larger than 4096 bytes; see Microsoft’s format command reference.

NTFS size limits by allocation unit

Microsoft publishes the following maximum supported volume and file sizes by NTFS allocation-unit size. These are documented limits, not recommended settings or performance measurements; Windows version and application or service constraints can impose lower limits. Figures are from Microsoft’s NTFS overview, accessed in 2026.

Which size to choose for an exFAT USB drive

If you want a drive to work between Mac and Windows, choose a compatible file system first. In its instructions for formatting a disk for Windows computers, Apple recommends MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or smaller and exFAT for disks over 32 GB. Those thresholds apply to Apple’s cited Disk Utility guidance for Windows-compatible disks, not to every formatting situation. Unless an application or workload has a documented requirement, leave allocation-unit size at the formatter’s offered default. See Apple’s Disk Utility instructions.

Microsoft’s exFAT specification allows sector sizes from 512 bytes to 4096 bytes and cluster sizes up to 32 MB. It also recommends no more than 224−2 clusters in the cluster heap; increasing cluster size can help keep the cluster count manageable. These are format limits and design rules, not a consumer chart identifying the best size for every USB drive.

SABRENT Tool-Free NVMe & SATA M.2 SSD Enclosure, USB 3.2 Type-C (EC-SNVE)
  • ENCLOSURE ONLY, SSD NOT INCLUDED: This is the case you put your own M.2 SSD into, not a drive with storage inside. 100% tool-free, so the SSD installs and comes out in seconds with no screwdriver.
  • FITS M.2 NVMe AND SATA: Works with both M.2 PCIe NVMe and M.2 SATA SSDs in 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths. Bare drives only, no room for a drive with a pre-installed heatsink. It does NOT take 2.5in SATA drives or mSATA.
  • 10GBPS USB 3.2 TYPE-C: Up to 10Gbps, and up to 1000MB/s in real transfers. Backward compatible with USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 at their own speed limits. Bus powered, no drivers and no external power supply.
  • SLIM ALUMINUM BUILD: Ultra-slim aluminum case with an ABS frame, with a thermal pad to move heat off the drive. Light enough to live in a laptop bag, solid enough to survive it.
  • IN THE BOX: Enclosure, 8in Type-C to Type-C cable and user manual. Works with Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.5 or later and Linux. Register on the manufacturer's website for extended warranty service.

Choose by device and use

Situation Practical choice
Ordinary Windows NTFS volume Keep the formatter’s default; Microsoft identifies 4 KB as NTFS’s default.
NTFS volume for Data Deduplication or very large files, including VHDX files over 1 TB Follow Microsoft’s workload-specific guidance; its example uses 64 KB allocation units with large FRS support.
External drive shared between Mac and Windows Choose the compatible file system first; follow the formatter’s default allocation-unit size unless there is a documented need to change it.
Mac-only drive Use APFS when appropriate for the Mac and its OS. Apple says APFS has been the default since macOS 10.13, is optimized for flash and SSD storage, and can also be used with HDDs and external direct-attached storage. Apple’s guidance describes file-system suitability, not a user-selectable allocation-unit recommendation. See Apple’s file system formats guide.
Many tiny files or a suspected performance issue Keep the default unless space accounting or a benchmark using your actual workload and target systems demonstrates a concrete reason to tune.

Will changing the allocation unit size erase files?

Changing a volume’s file system or allocation-unit setting generally involves formatting it, which erases the volume. Apple warns: “Formatting a disk or volume erases all the files on it. Save any files you need to another volume before formatting.” Back up files before formatting; see Apple’s formatting instructions.

When changing the default may be justified

  • A documented application or workload requirement specifies a different allocation-unit size.
  • A specialized NTFS workload matches Microsoft’s large-file or Data Deduplication guidance.
  • You have measured a concrete space-accounting or performance issue with the actual workload and systems that will use the drive.

Without one of those reasons, retain the formatter’s default rather than assuming an SSD, HDD, or USB drive needs a special cluster size.
