Start by trying Adaptive Audio, then decide whether Personalized Volume and Conversation Awareness fit the way you listen. These are experiments, not universal upgrades: the right choices depend on how much of your surroundings you want to hear and whether automatic audio changes suit you. Controls vary by AirPods Pro model, software version, and region.

Before you change anything: check your model and open its controls

Apple’s current guidance includes AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 for several newer features, but older AirPods Pro models may not offer the same controls. Hearing features also vary by country or region. If an option below does not appear, check Apple’s instructions for your model and software version rather than assuming there is a fault.

On iPhone or iPad, connect and wear your AirPods. Open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, then choose Listening Mode to select Adaptive or another mode. For additional settings, open Settings and tap the connected AirPods name; exact menu placement can differ by iOS version. On Mac, look under the AirPods name in System Settings. See Apple’s listening-mode instructions if your menus differ.

1. Try Adaptive Audio, then tune how much you hear

Adaptive Audio blends Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency, adjusting how much environmental sound reaches you as conditions change. It is a useful first setting to try if your day takes you between quieter and noisier places and you do not want to switch modes each time. Apple explains the feature in its Adaptive Audio guide.

  • LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
  • EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*

Use the Adaptive Audio slider to allow more or less ambient sound. If you prefer a consistent result, choose Noise Cancellation to reduce outside sound or Transparency to hear more of your surroundings. Neither fixed mode is automatically better; choose based on whether awareness or a steadier listening experience matters more in that moment.

2. Decide whether Personalized Volume should adjust media for you

Personalized Volume can adjust media volume in response to environmental conditions and learn your volume preferences over time. It is worth trying if you often change the volume as your surroundings change. It is an optional convenience feature, not a sound-quality enhancement; if you want to keep control of a chosen level, leave it off. Apple describes it alongside Conversation Awareness in its AirPods listening-mode instructions.

  • IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
  • MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. 3. Turn on Conversation Awareness only if automatic ducking helps

When it detects that you have started speaking, Conversation Awareness lowers media volume and enhances the voices in front of you. Spoken media, such as a podcast, may pause after a few seconds. If that behavior interrupts listening or happens at inconvenient times, turn the feature off. You can manually end a detected conversation with a press and hold on the AirPods stem. See Apple’s feature instructions for setup details.

4. Treat hearing-protection controls as support, not a substitute for safe listening

Apple documents Hearing Protection for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3, but availability varies by region. The feature may be unavailable when the AirPods lack battery, when Off listening mode is selected, or when Loud Sound Reduction is turned off for Transparency and Adaptive modes. Check Apple’s hearing health feature guidance for model and availability details. These controls do not replace sensible listening habits or taking breaks.

  • Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
  • Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
  • Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears

Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are also subject to regional availability. Apple describes Hearing Aid as a feature for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss that may use a hearing test or an existing audiogram. Do not use AirPods settings to self-diagnose hearing loss; consult a qualified hearing professional if you have concerns. Apple’s Hearing Aid feature page explains its intended use.

5. Explore accessibility and Spatial Audio if they match your needs

Accessibility adjustments

Noise Cancellation with One AirPod is an accessibility option for people who need noise cancellation while wearing a single AirPod. Headphone Accommodations and Transparency controls let you make more individual adjustments. These are best treated as personal settings to explore when relevant, rather than defaults every owner needs to change. Apple’s Transparency mode guide covers its customization options.

Spatial Audio and head tracking

Spatial Audio can be set to Off, Fixed, or Head Tracked. Off avoids the spatial presentation; Fixed keeps it from shifting with your head movement; Head Tracked makes the presentation respond to head movement. The best choice depends on the content and whether you want that movement-linked effect. Apple says the selection is saved per supported app, so you can choose differently for different apps. Personalized Spatial Audio is optional. See Apple’s Spatial Audio and head-tracking instructions.
