Which Air Conditioner Settings Reduce Electricity Use Without Sacrificing Comfort?

Use the highest comfortable AC setpoint, adjust it during sleep or absence when practical, and match fan settings to your equipment and humidity conditions.

Set your air conditioner to the highest temperature that still feels comfortable, raise it during sleep or when the home is empty where practical, and use fan controls suited to your equipment. For many room air conditioners, 78°F is a useful starting example—not a rule for every person or home. A room fan can circulate cooled air so you may be comfortable at a higher AC setting.

What temperature should I set my AC to in summer?

Choose the highest setpoint that remains comfortable for the people in the room. ENERGY STAR gives 78°F as a typical room-air-conditioner setting, while the U.S. Department of Energy recommends the highest comfortable summer setting. Treat 78°F as a starting point, not a universal target: comfort depends on factors such as activity, clothing, humidity and the home itself. A smaller difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures generally reduces cooling demand.

Should I turn the AC up when I’m away or asleep?

Raising the setting when less cooling is needed can reduce unnecessary operation. ENERGY STAR’s 2025 room-AC factsheet recommends setting the thermostat 4°F higher during sleep and 7°F higher when nobody is home. Those figures are specific to that room-AC guidance; they are not a universal schedule for central systems or every household. Use a smaller increase—or none—if the change would make the home uncomfortable or unsuitable for occupants, pets or other needs.

Should my AC fan be on Auto or On?

Central air conditioning

For a central system, the Department of Energy recommends setting the system fan to AUTO. In this mode, the blower runs with the cooling cycle rather than continuously. If you want more air circulation, use a room fan rather than leaving the central blower running solely for that purpose.

Room or window air conditioners

Room AC fan controls vary by model. On humid days, ENERGY STAR recommends using low fan speed when the unit offers that setting: slower airflow can give the unit more opportunity to remove moisture. Follow the unit’s manual for its specific modes and controls.

What AC fan setting is best on humid days?

For a room AC with adjustable fan speed, try low speed when moisture removal is a priority. Temperature and humidity are related, but lowering the thermostat does not necessarily solve a humidity problem. The Department of Energy notes that a colder setting can leave people uncomfortable while indoor humidity remains high. ENERGY STAR also cautions that an oversized room AC may cool a space before removing enough moisture, leaving it damp or clammy. Appropriate sizing and equipment controls matter as well as the temperature setting.

For more on why temperature changes alone may not address indoor moisture, see the Department of Energy’s Advanced HVAC Humidity Control for Hot-Humid-Climates.

Does setting the AC lower make it cool faster?

No. Setting the thermostat colder than usual when starting the air conditioner does not make the home cool faster. It can instead keep the system cooling past the temperature you wanted, wasting energy and making the space too cold. Set the temperature you actually want and let the system work toward it.

What else helps the settings work as intended?

  • Use a room fan for comfort. Moving air can help distribute cooled air and may make a higher AC setpoint feel comfortable. DOE recommends room fans for circulation, and ENERGY STAR recommends an extra fan with a room AC.
  • Keep heat sources away from the thermostat. Lamps and TVs near a room AC thermostat can affect its reading and cause the unit to run longer, according to ENERGY STAR.
  • Check the filter. ENERGY STAR advises checking filters monthly during heavy-use months and replacing them when dirty. Its general heating-and-cooling guidance says to replace filters at least every three months; equipment requirements vary, so follow the installed system’s instructions. See ENERGY STAR’s heating and cooling efficiency guidance.

Which settings should I try first?

Situation or equipment Setting to try Important qualification
Room AC, ordinary use Highest temperature that remains comfortable; 78°F is ENERGY STAR’s typical example. Not a universal comfort prescription.
Room AC, sleeping Raise the setpoint by 4°F, following ENERGY STAR’s 2025 factsheet. Room-AC guidance; adjust to household needs.
Room AC, nobody home Raise the setpoint by 7°F, following ENERGY STAR’s 2025 factsheet. Room-AC guidance; do not apply blindly to every system.
Central AC fan Use AUTO; use a room fan for additional circulation. Follow the equipment manual for model-specific controls.
Room AC on a humid day Use low fan speed if available and moisture removal is the priority. Controls differ; low speed does not replace correct sizing or humidity management.
