Best Buy Gaming PC Deals vs. Building a PC: Which Is Cheaper?

Neither buying a Best Buy gaming PC nor building one is reliably cheaper in every case. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison, its selected prebuilt PCs were slightly cheaper than comparable DIY builds at the time—but that finding is time-sensitive and does not establish a winner for every budget or configuration. The useful answer comes from comparing a specific prebuilt with a complete, closely matched parts list at same-day prices.

What Best Buy’s listed prices show

Best Buy’s U.S. desktop listings accessed in 2026 showed a wide range of specifications and prices. Examples on the page included:

Desktop listing Listed configuration Observed price
CyberPowerPC Ryzen 7 8700F, RTX 5060 8GB, 16GB DDR5, 1TB SSD $1,424.99
iBUYPOWER Slate Intel Core Ultra 5 225F, Intel Arc B570, 16GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe SSD $1,199.99
CyberPowerPC Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX 5070, 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD $2,299.99

These are snapshots of specific listings, not recommended target prices or lasting deals. Inventory, sellers, configurations, and discounts can change. The price examples also represent substantially different hardware, so they cannot be used to infer that one route is cheaper without matching specifications. Best Buy’s live desktop listings are the place to verify what is currently available.

What a recent comparison found—and what it does not prove

Tom’s Guide reported in its 2026 gaming PC comparison that the prebuilts it selected were “slightly cheaper” than comparable PCPartPicker builds when it checked. The publication linked that direction in part to then-high prices for RAM, SSDs, and graphics cards. This is a comparison of selected examples at a particular time, not a market-wide statistic or a guarantee that a Best Buy deal will beat a DIY build. Prices and the models being compared can change. How to compare a deal with a complete DIY build

Use the prebuilt’s exact configuration as the starting point. A headline price is meaningful only when the DIY alternative can deliver a comparable gaming experience and includes everything needed to make a working desktop.

  1. Record the prebuilt’s core specifications. Note the exact graphics card, processor, memory capacity and type, and SSD capacity. Also record any disclosed details about its motherboard, power supply, cooling, and case.
  2. Set a performance target. Decide which games, resolution, and frame-rate target matter to you. Match the GPU and a comparable CPU as closely as practical; similar memory and storage capacity help make the systems comparable, too.
  3. Price a complete parts list. Include the motherboard, case, power supply, cooling, and every other required component—not just the CPU and graphics card. Add an operating-system license if the DIY system needs one, plus any peripherals you would otherwise have to buy.
  4. Use prices from the same day. Compare current prices for every part with the current prebuilt price. Apply shipping and tax consistently to both totals, and account for any discount only while it is actually available.
  5. Separate cash cost from effort. State whether your comparison excludes the time needed to assemble, set up, and troubleshoot the DIY PC. If you do not want to handle those tasks, convenience has value even if you do not assign it a dollar amount.
  6. Check the whole ownership trade-off. Compare warranty and support terms, component quality, included software, return process, and the upgrade options of the exact prebuilt—not just the purchase total.

Where building can be worth more than a lower price

A custom build lets you choose the components and can make later changes easier. Best Buy Canada’s 2024 PC Components Buying Guide summarizes the distinction this way: “A pre-built PC often limits your ability to upgrade, but a custom-built system ensures flexibility.” That is general guidance, not a verdict on every desktop. Check whether a particular model uses standard or proprietary parts and whether its warranty affects upgrades before assuming it will be difficult to modify. The Canadian guide is not evidence about U.S. prices. Best Buy Canada’s PC components guide

A prebuilt may be the better fit if you prefer a ready-to-use system, want the seller or manufacturer to handle assembly, or find a listing that matches your performance needs at a competitive total. Best Buy also describes an instructional build experience in which a tech covers components, demonstrates a build, and offers assembly tips; its cited page does not establish local availability or terms. How to read the result

  • Choose based on price when both options have closely matched performance and included features, and the complete DIY total is lower after shipping, tax, and any operating-system requirement.
  • Choose the prebuilt when its complete system costs less than the matched parts basket, or when ready-to-use convenience and support are worth the difference to you.
  • Choose the build when component choice, upgrade flexibility, or a specific configuration matters more than a small price gap—and you are comfortable with assembly and setup.
  • Recheck before buying. A listing price, deal, or parts basket can change; an old comparison should not decide a current purchase.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
