The right choice depends on where requests and prompts may travel, what happens when a model provider fails, and which controls and audit records your team needs. The comparisons reviewed here point to useful candidates, but they do not amount to an independent head-to-head test or a verified inventory of every search result.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
An AI gateway sits between an application and one or more model providers. It can route requests, enforce limits or spending controls, and record usage. Because it handles both prompts and provider credentials, its deployment boundary and security maintenance matter as much as its feature list.

The most useful way to read a “best AI gateway” list is as a shortlist of options to test against your own deployment, failover, control, and evidence requirements—not as a universal winner.

How the named options differ
The table summarizes what the cited comparisons establish. “Not stated” means the cited comparison does not establish a comparable price or detail; it is not a claim that the product lacks that feature.
| Gateway | Deployment and fit described in the cited comparison | Pricing evidence in the cited comparison | What to verify for your use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vercel AI Gateway | Vercel recommends it for teams oriented around Vercel and the AI SDK. Its comparison says the gateway is not self-hostable. Choose the deployment boundary before comparing features
First decide where the gateway is allowed to run and what may cross the boundary between your application, gateway, and model provider. The named options span managed vendor networks, managed or hybrid services, customer-cloud and VPC deployments, self-hosting, and—in TrueFoundry’s Arize-described options—on-premises and air-gapped configurations. These labels are not interchangeable: ask what the chosen configuration actually stores, processes, and sends onward.
- Managed network: Clarify whether prompts, metadata, logs, and credentials pass through or are stored by the service, and which controls govern retention and access.
- Customer cloud, VPC, or hybrid: Get a diagram of the request path, including any components that remain vendor-hosted. Confirm who controls storage and encryption keys.
- Self-hosted, on-premises, or air-gapped: Establish who patches and operates the gateway, how it receives model-provider updates or reaches approved endpoints, and whether every required feature works in that environment.
Vercel’s comparison emphasizes deployment choice as a real differentiator, not a checkbox: it says Vercel AI Gateway is not self-hostable. VDF’s comparison likewise treats hosting and data handling as decision points. Vercel, July 27, 2026; VDF.ai, September 27, 2026

Test what “failover” actually does
A retry and a provider switch solve different problems. A retry resends a request after a transient error; it may still use the same upstream provider. Cross-provider failover routes the request to a different provider or model and may require explicit configuration. Do not assume that a product advertising retries will automatically switch providers.
Vercel’s July 2026 comparison says Cloudflare AI Gateway retries transient upstream errors automatically, while cross-provider failover requires Dynamic Routing to be configured. Treat this as a behavior to confirm against current Cloudflare documentation and your own configuration, not a permanent product guarantee. Vercel comparison
In a proof of concept, test a transient upstream failure and a sustained provider outage separately. For each, record whether the gateway retries, changes provider, respects your model or provider allowlist, and returns a useful error if no eligible route remains. Check how it handles timeouts and rate limits, too: an indiscriminate retry can add latency or repeat a request whose outcome is uncertain. Establish how duplicate or partially completed work is handled in your application before enabling retries for consequential operations.

Vercel reports that its own production index had fallback rescue 3.5% of requests and 5.1% of tokens in 2026. Those figures are Vercel’s vendor-specific production data, not an independently measured comparison or a prediction for another workload. Vercel comparison, 2026

A feature list matters only if the control is available in the deployment and plan you will use, applies before the request reaches a provider, and produces evidence your team can inspect. VDF’s comparison identifies controls, tool traffic, and evidence or logging as comparison points; Arize describes Portkey governance features and plan-specific pricing. VDF.ai, September 27, 2026; Arize AI, 2026
- Limits and budgets: Determine whether you can set per-team, per-application, or per-model rate limits and spending caps, and what happens when a limit is reached.
- Model access: Check whether administrators can restrict which users or applications call which models, and whether routing can bypass those restrictions.
- Guardrails and data handling: Identify where guardrails and PII handling occur in the request path, what they inspect or transform, and how failures are handled. Confirm whether these controls are included or separately licensed.
- Tool traffic: If your applications use tools, verify that the gateway’s policy and logging cover tool calls as well as model requests.
- Trace detail: For a representative request, confirm that an operator can determine the selected model and provider, route or fallback taken, timing, errors, and relevant usage or cost information without exposing sensitive prompt content unnecessarily.
Ask vendors to demonstrate these controls in your intended plan and deployment. A control listed in a roundup is not proof that it is enabled by default or available under your contract.

Read performance and ranking claims with their ownership attached
The cited material does not establish a neutral, independently audited cross-vendor performance statistic. Vercel’s comparison includes figures from its own production system and says its gateway exposes a particular live latency and throughput endpoint; those are Vercel’s claims, not independent validation. Any such number should be read with its owner, workload, measurement period, and method attached. Vercel comparison, July 27, 2026
A ranking also reflects its publisher’s scope and priorities. Vercel’s guidance favors Vercel and AI SDK-oriented teams; a comparison aimed at a different infrastructure or deployment context may reasonably produce a different shortlist. The reviewed sources support comparing the named products and decision criteria here, but they do not substantiate the claim that every page-one result was independently audited.
Include security ownership in the selection
A gateway centralizes provider credentials and may handle sensitive traffic and logs. That concentration makes patching, access controls, secret management, and incident response material selection criteria—not afterthoughts.

A June 2026 Cloud Security Alliance AI-assisted note reports that CVE-2026-42271 affected LiteLLM versions 1.74.2 through 1.83.6 and identifies LiteLLM 1.83.7 and Starlette 1.0.1 as an authorized fix. The note also says it had not undergone official CSA review and approval. Treat these details as a reported security lead, not definitive remediation guidance: verify the vulnerability, affected versions, and fix against primary vulnerability records and current LiteLLM advisories before acting. Cloud Security Alliance AI-assisted note, June 2026
For any candidate, ask who monitors security advisories, how fixes are delivered, what support or incident-notification commitments apply, and who owns updates in your selected deployment. For self-hosted software, include the gateway and its dependencies in your normal vulnerability and patch-management process.
A practical shortlist by requirement
- Already built around Vercel or its AI SDK: Evaluate Vercel AI Gateway, while confirming that its managed-only deployment model is acceptable.
- Want a managed service on a provider network: Evaluate Cloudflare AI Gateway, and test the precise retry and cross-provider routing behavior you need.
- Need to operate the gateway yourself: Include LiteLLM in the shortlist, but make current patch status and operational ownership a pass/fail requirement.
- Need a managed or hybrid option with governance features: Compare Portkey’s plan boundaries and request allowances against your actual traffic and control requirements.
- Need deployment flexibility extending to private or air-gapped environments: Ask TrueFoundry to map the exact plan and architecture to your boundary requirements.
- Already operate Kong for APIs: Check whether Kong’s available gateway features and deployment model fit, rather than assuming existing API infrastructure settles the question.
- Prioritize access to a broad managed model catalog: Consider OpenRouter, but include its credit-purchase fee structure in the cost calculation.
These are conditional starting points drawn from the cited comparisons, not endorsements or a universal ranking. Before procurement, reconfirm live product capabilities, plans, prices, and security status with the vendors and test the configuration you would actually deploy.
