No reviewed assistant can be confirmed from its published guidance as never retaining or building a persistent personal profile. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini offer controls that can limit particular kinds of persistence or personalization, but the controls are not interchangeable: chat history, saved memory, model improvement, and data retention are separate issues.
What “remembering” means
An assistant can appear to remember you in different ways. Saved chat history keeps conversations available in your account; a memory or personalization feature may carry details into later chats; and model-improvement settings govern whether conversations can be used to improve models. A temporary-chat feature may change some of these behaviors without immediately deleting all retained data.

For that reason, “doesn’t remember me” is not a single privacy setting. Check what each control changes, how long data is retained, and whether a connected service or managed account adds different terms.

How to choose a lower-persistence setup
- Review memory separately from history. If an assistant offers saved memory or personalization, inspect what is saved and disable or manage it if you do not want details carried into future responses. Deleting a conversation and changing memory are not necessarily the same action.
- Use temporary or incognito chat for sensitive one-off questions. Read the provider’s explanation of what that mode excludes—history, memory, model improvement—and what it still retains. Claude’s stated default is 30-day retention, with possible longer organization-specific retention.
- Check model-improvement settings independently. A choice about using chats to improve a model is not the same as turning off memory or deleting history. For Claude, Anthropic’s up-to-five-year statement applies only when sessions are allowed for improvement and to new or resumed chats after enabling that setting.
- Inspect integrations before sharing sensitive information. OpenAI says information sent through GPT actions is subject to the recipient’s privacy policy. A temporary mode in the assistant does not establish what an external service does with information it receives.
- For work or school accounts, check the administrator’s policy. Anthropic says an organization can set longer retention for Incognito chats. A managed account may therefore behave differently from a personal account.
What to conclude
These providers document controls that reduce specific forms of persistence, not a universal guarantee that no personal profile is retained. The practical choice is to use the narrowest suitable mode, turn off or review personalization where available, check model-improvement choices, and account for integrations and organizational policies. Revisit the official guidance before relying on a setting, because product labels and retention practices can change.
