U.S. import data can show which countries supplied specific ingredient categories, but it cannot trace every ingredient in a retail bottle or identify where a brand formulated or packaged it. In 2024, Switzerland led U.S. imports of unmixed vitamin A by trade value, while China led imports of other unmixed vitamins. Those are distinct customs categories—not a ranking of where all supplements come from.
What U.S. import data can tell you
The U.S. International Trade Commission’s DataWeb provides access to official import and export statistics published by the Census Bureau. Queries can be organized by product classification, trading partner and time period, and can report measures such as trade value or physical quantity.

For questions about products and countries of origin, USITC identifies general imports as the appropriate measure. It counts total physical arrivals of merchandise from foreign countries. That makes it useful for examining the declared trade origin of a classified product, but it does not turn an ingredient category into a traceability record for a finished supplement.
Two vitamin categories, two different import patterns
The examples below use 2024 figures from World Bank WITS, drawing on UN Comtrade data. The HS codes are six-digit Harmonized System classifications. Values are trade values—not retail sales or what U.S. consumers spent—and quantities are in kilograms. WITS presents value in thousands of U.S. dollars.

Switzerland led by value. China led by quantity, so the highest-value source was not the largest source by weight. |

The contrast matters: “where vitamins come from” is too broad unless the product classification and measurement are specified. These figures cover two kinds of unmixed vitamins and derivatives. They do not establish the leading source for minerals, botanicals, protein powders, probiotics, finished multivitamins or supplements as a whole.

Why an ingredient’s trade origin is not a bottle’s full origin story
A customs partner entry describes trade in a classified product. It does not say which brand bought it, whether it became part of a particular formula, or where that formula was blended, encapsulated or packaged. A retail supplement can involve multiple ingredients and stages of production, while these tables track imports under a particular ingredient code.
- Ingredient origin: the trade data can indicate the declared source country for the classified import.
- Brand location: the data do not establish where a supplement company is based.
- Manufacturing and packaging: the partner data do not identify where a finished product was formulated or packaged.
- A specific bottle: the tables do not trace ingredients to an individual brand, batch or bottle.
For those reasons, the figures cannot support a claim that most U.S. supplements come from one country. A broader estimate would require a defined set of tariff classifications for the ingredients or finished products being counted, with care to avoid omissions and overlapping product scopes.

How to check other products or years
- Open USITC DataWeb and choose the product classification that matches the item you want to examine.
- Set the partner or country, time period and measure—such as value or quantity—and select general imports when analyzing import product and origin information.
- Record the classification, year, partner selection and measure alongside the result. A value ranking and a quantity ranking answer different questions.
- For another official view, consult the Census Bureau’s Country and Product Trade Data. Census also publishes views organized by categories such as NAICS, end use and SITC; their scopes differ, so do not combine them casually with tariff-code data.
Trade datasets can be revised. USITC DataWeb reported that Census revisions affecting 2023–2025 records were incorporated on June 20, 2026, and reported coverage through July 2026. When comparing or citing a fresh query, include the dataset year and retrieval date; a result may change as records are revised.

A country’s position in an import table is not a safety verdict, nor is a customs statistic a product approval or quality test. The FDA says manufacturers and distributors are responsible for evaluating supplement safety and labeling before marketing. It also says they are prohibited from marketing adulterated or misbranded products, and that the agency can take action against such products after they reach the market.
